SWR Productions Forum _ Games Discussion _ Overblown ammounts of weapons in action games and customisation

Posted by: Die Hindenburg 28 Aug 2015, 15:12

I am no fan of gun control, but too many games have way to many guns, with these also often just variations, but even in a game where every gun would be unique, if the numbers of their types would be to large, it will reduce player choice, yes its sounds contradicting but if you use only two of these, like that multi missile launcher and gatling, why you want to the other ones other than trying?
AND.... why EVERY game NEEDS gun customisation? I really begin to hate this feature, it ruined many recent games.

What are your thoughts?

What's the problem with gun customization? So you want the devs to restrict even more features like personalizing your weapons? I like it. It adds a bit of tactical variety. Maybe you should sacrifice that grenade launcher for a grip and get better accuracy? Or add a scope and increase your range at the cost of decreased surround-visibility? I don't see how it ruined games.

But if it comes into every game with guns, it takes away the uniqueness, like in Dead Space 3 or in Fallout 4. And in most games some attachments are vastly superior actually then the others, what is the point of a grip if you have an grenade launcher (accuracy is often not a thing anyway in todays shooters), why not using a scope, it is almost essintial in an COD and battlefield game, no one plays without scopes or COG sights (which are really substitutal scopes as most assault rifles lack long ranged scope.
Battlefield 3 and 4 are exceptions, but they are made around that entire concept. Other games like Crank in time had them as small bonus feature (which was executed badly).
If anything, i only like coloring options, like in GOW, but not if they are limited as DLC.

What uniqueness? The entire point of customization is to make your gun unique. BLOPS3 will take it a step further where you can design your own guns completely.

Problem is, that the gun customization needs to be a core feature rather than just an extra, and in BLOPS3's gunsmith is a extreme example.
Its like an uncanny valley, each time more stuff is added it feelms more overloaded, but if its so extensive like in gunsmith (you can basically design the gun from the ground up) then its a different matter.
But not every shooter needs it, like Halo. Cosmetic is often fine in many games, but the actuall gameplay chaning customisation slowly but surely becomes a problem.
