Simple, and why ? Also, it would be nice to hear people's memories about these two or one of these two movies,
since they have special place in many peoples hearts. This post has been edited by re_simeone: 24 Aug 2016, 2:01 |

I honestly like both, and would only pick Alien because it gave us the original concept for the creature and Ripley. However, both films have strong merits of their own: The first is slower, more mysterious, atmospheric and suspenseful, the second is more action-oriented, with more iconic setpieces and badassery. I prefer to regard the first and second as the only Alien films that really matter, because they feel overall round and well concluded at the end of the second. The third always struck me as pointlessly spiteful in how it completely undoes the positive, satisfying ending of the second and the fourth is just plain bizarre and feels like a self-parody of the franchise.

I prefer the firs one, mostly because of its special atmosphere and...the cat . "Aliens" is also a good picture, but mostly action-oriented then the first one. I also like the third part of the franchise. But the fourth one, in my opinion, is unneeded episode, because the third one logically ends the main plot already.

I always preferred Aliens over Alien. IMO, I think it was better than the first film and had more memorable lines/moments.

I actually liked Aliens, but I had a hard time understanding the plot.
It's a really weird reboot, I'll tell you that. This post has been edited by Star_Abraham: 30 Jan 2017, 3:07 -------------------- |

I actually liked Aliens, but I had a hard time understanding the plot. It's a really weird reboot, I'll tell you that. I was told that there would be Aliens. I was not disappointed. First off, nice image Star. Definitely going to save that image to my desktop . Secondly, let's take a look at both films in detail, as it kind of is my area of expertise. Now, I love the films. In truth, the Aliens franchise was probably really my first fandom that I actually was a part of. I own all the movies, a lot of collectible figures, and am pretty much a huge nerd over the franchise as a whole; yes, that includes the parts where the series started to really dip down, like the AVP movies and Aliens 3 and Resurrection. But, we're not here to talk about me. We're here to talk about Ridley Scott and his, in my opinion, unquestionably best work yet in sci-fi. Let's start with the first one. Alien: in space, no one can hear you scream. The basic premise is as follows: After a space merchant vessel perceives an unknown transmission as distress call, their landing on the source moon finds one of the crew attacked by a mysterious lifeform. Continuing their journey back to Earth with the attacked crew having recovered and the critter deceased, they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun. A simple concept for a humble beginning. Many remember Aliens for being an action thriller, but the original Alien was more or less a horror or thriller, and a pretty damn good one. Some of the scares are, indeed, real (won't give spoilers unless you really want 'em), and the tenseness and atmosphere of the entire film just reeks with dread. The creature itself had many prior different designs, some of which would be revisited in Prometheus (the facehugger was originally supposed to be larger than a human being, for example, as depicted in a lot of Giger's artistic concepts for the film), and in the upcoming Alien: Covenant, which should be going back to Ridley's routes in the original (the "neomorph" creature is, I think, a modern take on one of Giger's designs. Rest in peace Giger.). The pacing is quite well-done, and while it may seem a little slow, nothing is disappointing. The twist in the climax of the film is probably one of the most memorable, in my opinion, and really well-done. The lighting as well is incredibly good. It's dark when it needs to be dark, it's bright when it needs to be bright, and everywhere in between to make for a realistic horror. It's kind of like the original Halloween by John Carpenter in the sense of it all, building more on the characters and the tenseness of the movie itself, rather than focusing on the monster. I give this film an official NagandEmerald seal of approval for being a good thriller that starts off the series, not so much with a bang, but with some pants-shitting. Ah, yes. Aliens: there are some places you don't go alone. Now, this is the film where the series really kicked off to its action, rather than focusing on what made the first film good. That's not to say it's bad; in fact, quite the opposite. The change in genre is pretty seamless to me. The premise is also pretty simple, kicking off 60 years after the original, where the last survivor, Ellen Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver for those unfamiliar) of the Nostromo is rescued by the company that hired her in the first place. The moon from the first film, designated as LV-426, has been colonized, but contact is lost. This time, a rescue team that is sent boasts impressive firepower, but will it be enough? While the first act of the film is pretty similar to how the original began, as soon as the almighty Colonial Marines land on the moon and make their way to the colony, the action portion begins to kick in. This time, there is more than one of Giger's nightmare children, and they're out for blood. In truth, this one was probably more memorable by a lot of fans for its quotes ("Well that's great! That's just fuckin' great man! Game over man, game over!" and "Get away from her you BITCH!" being the most popular, and this one being my particular favorite "You're going out there to destroy them, right? Not to study. Not to bring back, but to wipe them out?"), and most certainly more memorable for introducing us to the Alien Queen, but this one is more a tickler at my action nerve than it is at what I loved about the series in the first place. Not too many scary or tense moments after the first act, but it was still a pretty damn fun ride until the very end. This one earns the NagandEmerald seal of approval for keeping true to the franchise, if not a little loosely, and for bringing me consistent action-y joy in the form of a kick-ass Sigourney Weaver and the Colonial Marines Now, as you can see...I love both movies. I praise both of them highly as being some of my alltime favorites, alongside the original Predator, the original Halloween and Halloween 2, The Thing by JC, and others. Alien was probably my first fandom, and while that brought me in with the second one, I think I'll always be more fond of the original, due to the fact that it strikes that horror-lover nerve with me. Hope that my statement wasn't TLDR for you all. -------------------- |

Alien was better, in my opinion.
Why?, well... 1. It focused more on the human experience of 'average' characters, soldiers are not really protagonists that most people can identify with IMO. 2. The Xenomorph was more scary due to the lack of military around yet. 3. It was essentially the beginning of a new genre and a movie culture. 4. It had Parker in it. -------------------- |
