In terms of a game, I believe that factions are an important part of the setting and story. Especially those that are unique.
Examples include: ROTR's five factions: USA (Generalist), GLA (Subversive), China (Spammer/Horde), Russia (Powerhouse) and E.C.A (Cannon/Turtler) The Paradox Mod: Allies (Generalist/Air Force), Soviets (Powerhouse), Empire (More elitist- bit hard to pin down), Confederate Revolutionaries (Subversives- good guy GLA.), Order of the Talon (Elitist/Powerhouse/quality), the Mediterranean syndicate (Cannon/Ranger), the Atomic Kingdom of China (more defensive in approach) and the Electrical Protectorate (Spammer). I love unique factions and I wanted to create a thread where people could post their own faction designs in any universe they want. They could be Post Apocalyptic Bandits, Cybernetic Purists, Dinosaurs, Alternate Dimension fascist super-maniacs with super tanks. That's quite what I imagined. The Chinese faction would be the most 'lightweight', if you will, perhaps to the point of only using a few buildings which could pack up and redeploy elsewhere either as trucks or helicopters. They would rely heavily on infantry, but whereas NK would use them to swarm, China would have well trained weapon specialists operating like paratroopers or special forces behind enemy lines. As the game goes on, they would also receive support from highly mobile and lightly armoured vehicles. It'd be interesting to set them up as a faction that doesn't drive home its victory by overrunning the opposing base with a tide of heavy tanks but rather, decimate, conscrict and overwhelm the defenders methodically, then simply walk in with specialist, mob up what's left, and demolish the place. One of their subfactions would represent a more brute force approach, and could still culminate in the deployment of a small heavy armour force, so that we could still have the obligatory ZTZ tanks in there. For the Pacific faction, it might also be interesting to consider a non-tier based tech progression where instead of unlocking whole tiers of units via a building, you would be able to purchase access to 'collections' of units in whichever order you prefer/can afford, the idea being that you 'activate' different contingents from your allies. I think RA3 Paradox had something similar for North Vietnam, except that each purchase unlocked the tech to one particular new unit. Instead, each of thesewould give you access to multiple types of units that are thematically related that you can then build. For example, activating a light motorised contingent from the Philippines once would then allow you to build Philippine Marines to bolster your infantry (if we presume that this faction would otherwise tend towards higher cost units) and armoured gun trucks that serve as transports and carry several .50 cals, adding mobile firepower and numbers to your selection. Activating a more expensive JSDF mechanized force would give you advanced Type 10 tanks and MCV tank destroyers for the late game, and so on. You would be able to buy these unlocks in whichever order you like, allowing for unconventional tactics, like trying to get the heavy/expensive units as early as possible while having to make do with a very limited selection until then, or playing slowly, then attacking across the entire spectrum once your whole roster is unlocked. In Terms of Factions this would most likely make: NK (Spammer/Subversive) SK (Cannon/Powerhouse/Turtle) China (Is sort of a mix but would be a bit of an Elitist, meets Ranger/Technical wit a little bit of subversive thrown in) Pacific Expeditionary Force (I took a few liberties with the name- Brute meets Specialist and elements of many playstyles so I'm just gonna say Generalist) -------------------- A place where I posted my idea about a possible take on the Post-Red Alert 2 Command and Conquer universe: Reimagining Post Red Alert 2
