In terms of a game, I believe that factions are an important part of the setting and story. Especially those that are unique.
Examples include: ROTR's five factions: USA (Generalist), GLA (Subversive), China (Spammer/Horde), Russia (Powerhouse) and E.C.A (Cannon/Turtler) The Paradox Mod: Allies (Generalist/Air Force), Soviets (Powerhouse), Empire (More elitist- bit hard to pin down), Confederate Revolutionaries (Subversives- good guy GLA.), Order of the Talon (Elitist/Powerhouse/quality), the Mediterranean syndicate (Cannon/Ranger), the Atomic Kingdom of China (more defensive in approach) and the Electrical Protectorate (Spammer). I love unique factions and I wanted to create a thread where people could post their own faction designs in any universe they want. They could be Post Apocalyptic Bandits, Cybernetic Purists, Dinosaurs, Alternate Dimension fascist super-maniacs with super tanks. Some more ideas I had:
(Note: these are rough and I'm really tired also they may not be that balanced.) I envisioned Directorate as very focused on slow units with heavy armour and damage. Their economy and military power takes a while to build up. However their air force is rather potent when targeting ground forces but given the scarcity of remnant air force, they have no interceptors. Special Forces formulate as more of a support role, however their presence is more increased in the black section. support vehicles are few, excluding the construction and repair vehicles. Subfactions: Directorate: (Dark Green is house colour. Many units have sleek blue visors, their armour is a mix of chrome, silver and dark grey. With some obsidian/shiny black) Armour Command- I envisioned these guys to be more focused on Armour in all forms. Early on they would have advanced APCs, support vehicles, a strong but slow MBT and an IFV. As they teched up they would be able to access heavy and superheavy vehicles. One of which would be a huge anti-tank/building plasma tank. THeir focus would be on having large, self-sufficient armour convoys out in the field with support from artillery. However their aircraft are limited to a transport helicopter, a long range bomber, and a siege gunship. Infantry function more in support of the mechanised units. Advanced weapons- Advanced Weapons is more of a focus on cannon units supported by powerful off-map strikes and aircraft that can travel through the atmosphere. They operate quick a few 'offensive' defences (in other words ones that have offensive capabilities). They would mainly utilise units that operate from out of range of their opponents. Their combat units would be able to outrange their enemies. Their aircraft would mainly focus on a hypersonic fighter/bomber and several helicopter variants. Black Section- These guys are the off-the-record section. They make lots of use of precision weapons and they have no subfaction specific area of effect equipment. Their artillery is a sniper tank that can fire through multiple infantry and do heavy damage to vehicles and buildings but requires line of sight. Their infantry can be stealthed with nano cloaks. They also have an excellent anti-vehicle unit armed with a laser cannon. The final piece in the Black Section arsenal is the chemical weapons they have. They can deploy neutron and gas weapons to wipe out Remnant enemies. Remnant: (Red is the house colour. Their units have various shades of brown and tan, blakc clothes sometimes, most Partisan infantry wear civilian clothing) Partisan- These guys I wanted to make really reliant on fluid supply lines, like many resistance movements. While all three resistance subfactions have a mother truck that resources are dropped off at, Remnant workers are on ATVs, allowing them to quickly move around and for players to fluidly change tactics. they focus a lot on infantry and lack any aircraft. However, Partisan units can cover the Air really well, through hidden anti-air trucks that can creep around the map (like Urals). Partisan infantry are extremely specialised, with demolition, engineers (Physics and Engineering graduates), protesters (similar to an angry mob) and many other support units. THey also benefit from protest vans, which buff their firepower. THey are supported by makeshift vehicles such as battle-buses and armoured cars. Liberation Army- The subfaction that either digs in or goes on the offence, but can't do both. The Liberation Army can choose one of two strategies: Breakthrough or Entrenchment, however neither one can be utilised at the same time. In Breakthrough, vehicles have a speed boast and more aggressive tactics are rewarded, as well as this a group of breakthrough-style units are unlocked. Contrarily.. Entrenchment allows infantry to build foxholes, unlocks more defences and restricts a large number of more mobile units such as the BTR. The Grizzly (A mix between the T-82 and T-90) can also dig in. Chaos Cell- The crazy ass motherfuckers... these guys have an arsenal of stolen and destructive weapons. The central idea of this faction is that they are lawless, while the Partisans aim to reduce the amount of civilian casualties and the Liberation Army makes use of conventional weapons, the Chaos cells care little. They can wire their and neutral buildings with explosives, meaning Directorate special forces could meet an untimately end. They lay IEDs out and use sniping tactics. Many of their units are designed for one time use or for niche tactics. The end game is that they have cyber warfare that can cripple Directorate capabilities. In a final act the Cell can call in a hijacked Directorate Sat Strike, deploy chemical weapons trucks and unleash a dirty nuke in the enemies base.
