SWR Productions Forum _ General Chat _ Google takes flak for remembering Tetris more than D-Day

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92266-Google-Criticized-as-Anti-American-for-Tetris-Logo

This is just brilliant...in a really, REALLY stupid kind of way. It's their website and it's solely up to them what
they put in the logo. Even though the company may be American, not everyone on the entire bloody internet is.

QUOTE
"I have to say, though, that this is no departure for Google, a firm that finds it nearly impossible to post images celebrating any American holidays or important milestones in American history," he continued. "So, what we have here is just one more example of Google's essentially anti-American policies."
Oh wow, I laughed at that.

I think Google is just merely doing what every business does: appeal to the largest audience.

Posted by: NergiZed 9 Jun 2009, 12:25

Oh Pish-aw. What Google does with it's banner is it's own business, just because they put up a jpeg that celebrated something else doesn't suddenly make them anti-american. Plenty of other places would've informed people to the fact that it was D-day, far more than the places that would've informed people that it was the 25th anniversary of the creation of Testris.

Posted by: Crazykenny 9 Jun 2009, 12:30

Oh my god, thats probably the most stupid thing I have ever heard...

Posted by: blowthebullet 9 Jun 2009, 12:33

Why is american arguing about a small thing like google, internet is not only US but the whole world.

Posted by: Dutchygamer 9 Jun 2009, 12:35

Don't you just love stupid ppl?

Posted by: Comr4de 9 Jun 2009, 12:39

Eh retarded bickering, sure it's an important event there's no argument in that but it's really google's decision what they want to display or not.

Posted by: Shock 9 Jun 2009, 12:48

I really wonder why those senile critics care so much...

Posted by: Alias 9 Jun 2009, 13:12

Because disrespecting America deserves the death penalty...

Posted by: Waris 9 Jun 2009, 13:18

All the funnier since Tetris was invented by a Soviet scientist.

hhmmm, that means they are the same as the guy's in the middle east (if you not phrase allah, you will get a death penalty).

Posted by: Rayburn 9 Jun 2009, 14:02

While I'm not wishing to insult any of the more sensible Americans, there are definitely quite a few Yanks who are under the illusion that their history is more important than that of every other country. For them, everyone who doesn't praise the US in every other sentence is automatically 'anti-American' which, in their book, is apparently the most evil and fiendish thing there is. It's quite sad, really, because these people are giving their oh-so-beloved country a bad name.

I am really sure Alias was exagerating to show how excesive patriotic they are than it actually hurts more what they defend, the over patriotics americans are one of the reason many people dont like USA very much, and while they may not kill for that, they are still zealots so they are just at a rock throw of ending acting like the enemys of they country they hate so much

with al respect to any other american citicens, a bunch of fantatics =/= the whole country

Going by the biased logic: If you do not praise US, you are against US.

Yes, that interpretation was correct - however the 'death penalty' reference was also an allusion to the fact that they are practically the only Western country to still do the horrific act.

...sigh...the world does not bend to your wishes America...
Not out to insult any Americans, but some of them seem to think if you're not waving the Stars & Stripes, you might as well be dressed up like a av-7.gif

The whole world economy is going to heck and this gets front page news?
Really people, prioritize! duh2.png

Perhaps 65th anniversary of D-day is more politically correct than 25th anniversary of Tetris but I don't see a D-Day themed google as being that attractive. Plus Google is appealing to the world on the whole and not just the US, Canada and the UK (I guess France could count too). This is just an extremist writer. There will always be extremism on the internet.

I really wish I was joking, but that's an actual American response I heard. And no, he wasn't kidding.

You will always get idiots who represent their people in the worst way imaginable. This is a textbook example of that. What's worse is that there are people who are prepared to give them the air time.

That's what you call Jigoism and Reactionary Nationalism.

And that's now many military powers fall. Too much emphasis on military expansion, imperialism, and national pride.

According to some Wingnuts, America IS the only so-called, "free nation" in the world. lol

Why do people still think like this?

Posted by: Rorschach 10 Jun 2009, 9:26

Talk about beating a dead horse. I think we've established that the US isn't God.

Now then, a bit political here, isn't it?

That aside, I don't care about what Google does and does not parade on their banner. D-Day is known well-enough that it doesn't need such advertisement anyway. I don't see why they didn't post it up though. It seemed to be fitting with their tendency to do such things. If it was political reasons, I think their plan rather backfired.

Maybe some are taking it a bit too far, but shame on Google. They also until very recently, didn't commemorate Veterans' Day/Memorial Day either (but allowed the Red Chinese to censor the Chinese version of Google).

We're okay with that I guess. Rather than over-restricting the access to political discussions and forcing people to deal with these hard subjects as dreary, unironical, and politically correct as possible, we put our faith in you people to handle yourselves. That does, however, NOT mean that personal attacks, one-sided assumptions and +1 posts are allowed.

That's exactly the problem with the media nowadays, the idiots try to grab what ever 'juicy' story they can find but Christ, that's what escalates events like these for that same reason.

That's because giving them the airtime is a way to stir up controversy and we all know controversy is what drives ratings anymore.

Posted by: Nqss 15 Jun 2009, 19:07

maybe because Tetris is Russian Soviet game?

Posted by: Shock 15 Jun 2009, 22:10

Well who said some americans live in the past..

Posted by: Pickysaurus 16 Jun 2009, 1:43

Tetris is alot less political than D-day or whatever. Thus shouldnt kick up such a fuss
