Look how good District 9 was.
There's no America anywhere in that. All South Africa. I rest my case. -------------------- |

Indeed, man. If one of those starships hovered over a favela, it would be shot down in seconds. Quite a short movie. If they do manage to fire its main weapon though, even better. My tax money would be better spent elsewhere. I doubt you'd like the prospect of that very ship crashing on the favela that shot it down -------------------- |

OH MY GOD A MOVIE BASED ON AN AMERICAN HOLIDAY IS PATRIOTIC? WHAT THE FUCKING HELL.
You guys are totally right, it should be about the Chinese's growing military power and people in Favelas shooting down a 20 story space ship. Oh and since we are throwing around ideas why don't I give one? Look how good District 9 was. There's no America anywhere in that. All South Africa. I rest my case. Let's not act as though a movies setting is an any way related to how good it is. This post has been edited by Nem: 1 Apr 2010, 21:11 -------------------- |

It's just the fact that the old 'America saves the day'-plot does get a little boring after seeing it for the nth time. Yes, freedom and democracy are cool things and you have the most sophisticated military in the world but that doesn't mean that all the other countries wouldn't be able to do shit without you in the advent of an alien invasion. American movies tend to depict America as a nation that values tenacity, fighting spirit and a positive can-do-mentality, but apparently, only if it's about America itself being tenacious and brave because according to these movies, no one else is. Which is kind of a shame because at the end of ID4, when humanity is gearing up for the final battle against the aliens, we also get a montage of Russian and British troops answering the call, heck, even Arabs and Israelis working together, but the actual battle itself only focuses on the Americans defending Area 51 and infiltrating the mothership. This isn't about anti-Americanism; it's simply boring from an artistic standpoint. Why would anyone restrict an epic story about a world wide alien invasion, i.e. a cataclysmic event that involves every one of 'us' and forever changes the course of human history, to just a single country, no matter which one?

Why would anyone attempt to apply political view's to a Patriotic summer blockbuster?
It's not a thinking mans movie, and if you expect the sequel to be artistic in any way you have got the wrong film. EDIT: This thread basically boils down to "I WANT A DUMB PATRIOTIC FILM ABOUT MY COUNTRY!" and if I seamed offended in my last post it's because of that and the strong political motivation this forum has become so fond of recently. Fair point, I'm not expecting summer blockbusters to be philosphically insightful - especially those of the Emmerich-variety - but aside from all the political subtext, be it intentional or not, I am asking for some creativity. Mix it up a bit, you know. Like I said, America saves the day simply IS kind of old from a creative standpoint and I can atleast expect some creative ideas EVEN from a summer blockbuster, can't I? Also, these movies can have SOME meaning too. District 9 was an amazing popcorn action fest. Typical summer blockbuster material, but at the same time, it did manage to convey a meaningful message and gave some food for thought without turning into some boring ass auteur movie. All I'm saying is that a healthier balance would be nice. Now, ID4"2" probably isn't the movie to pull this off but one can still dream, right? I just want a decent, not entirely mindless sci-fi flick about an alien invasion that revitalises the genre in a positive way (mainly so we can get over this whole vampire bullshit that's so crazy popular right now) but I'm afraid a simple retelling of ID4 with more explosions simply won't cut it.

Let's not act as though a movies setting is an any way related to how good it is. Let's go set Citizen Kane in a medieval peasant town and Bladerunner in a Greek Temple.Oh wait. EDIT: This thread basically boils down to "I WANT A DUMB PATRIOTIC FILM ABOUT MY COUNTRY!" and if I seamed offended in my last post it's because of that and the strong political motivation this forum has become so fond of recently. Hardly. Movies about Australia are fucking boring. I want to learn about OTHER COUNTRIES, because you know, the world isn't entirely occupied by Australia.

My tax money would be better spent elsewhere. That would be so epically funny and awesome. so its settled independence day 2 plot it is then. A giant space ship hovering over a favela sounds SWEET. on a side note that post made my day thanks overdose XD This post has been edited by Jester: 2 Apr 2010, 1:26 |

I have a feeling ID2 will be something along the lines of a second wave invasion where humanity are more able to fight back... then ID3 would be taking the fight to the aliens

MY WISHLIST FOR ID2:
-INTRO OF RAPTORS -MOAR HORNETS -MOAR EXPLOSIONS -MOAR COOPERATION BETWEEN NATIONS (Seriously, I like to see all of the world's fighters fight the aliens) ...and that's all. This post has been edited by ComeOn225: 2 Apr 2010, 22:39 -------------------- Hello, comrades.
Before I start, I must ask one question: how do you think battles are won? If you answered "It just take a lot of men", then I may suggest you to leave the academy. Why will I say that? It is because battles are not won just by simply shooting down your enemies: it also takes emotions to fight a battle. Hope, courage, pride, honor, love: these are the main emotions that it takes to win a battle. Yes, your equipment, your skills, and your genetics are very important, but it all boils down to one thing: Do you have the WILL to fight? Class is dismissed. WARNING: Watching this may result in losing your manliness. Yep: I'm a rusty sword. VERY rusty. :/ |
