Hello everybody,

I open a new thread for the linux discussion.

linux?
For people that don't know much about linux: linux is a opensource kernel that is being used
by many different operating systems like: fendora, redhet, ubuntu etc...
The kernel operates your system and care about the communication with the hardware.

disibutions
Every distribution of linux has his own purpose like ubuntu has to make it easy for people to install new software and use it. The graphical user interface is not a part of linux but a module that can be installed like KDE or GNOME, you can use these modules to make your life easier with a desktop and taskbar.

software
Many distibutions has a sort of software managment system where you can select software and download/install them direct on your pc. you can give a command like in debian its: apt-get install gcc or fendora: yum install gcc (with that command you install gcc)

Most used?
Linux is the most used platform when it comes to hosting or a server, the main reason is that you can customize linux for everything and it cost nothing. (no license payment), current linux has a market of 23%.

To begin the topic, have you ever used linux and what do you like or not ?

(PS: this server and forum is running under linux, distro: centos 5)

To make it short.
I did try and like it.
The only thing is there is no real CAD for Machine builder like me.
This is the main reason i am still on WinXP

Best regards

Thats the main reason why linux is not so good on a regular pc. There are some opensource examples for CAD like Qcad http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad.html
but they are having not so many functions like CAD.

Like office there is open office etc....

You must make some effort to find the right apps wink.gif, but many people don't do that because: why switch to a other different OS if windows works for me ?

Actually Qcad is a nice 2d program.
What the most machine builder need is 3D because if you want to do stuff like this there is no way around 3D

dual booting ubuntu with windows 7 on both the desktop and the laptop. have tried many many distros but i am just too used to debian/gnome systems to work on anything else. waiting for the mobilin project to move into a final stable release then i will switch my netbook to that.
