I'm probably asking this as the youngest, most ignorant, most inexperienced member here. Hell, i haven't even graduated yet.

Please do refrain from saying stuff like "ah, that explains why 99% of your posts on moddb make no sense at all". I know that already.

How to
1. Develop a common sense
2. Develop a scientific mindset
3. Socialize??(i'm an introvert)
4. Do something significant(i'm talking chosen one level significance here)

Anything else constructive is welcome. Anything like "underage n00b get rekt" (which ironically is what a typical underage n00b would say)isn't.

Thanks in advance.

1. Start by deleting your other thread that is the exact same as this one.

Developing "common sense" takes interaction with people and by simply doing things. It requires one to be observant and to then take intuition and simply have good listening and observation skills. Because common sense is a mixture of just basic knowledge in order to function and things a person has perceived and learned. This can be hard for some people because some folks have legitimate problems with that like ADHD or aspbergers or various forms of autism which can hinder that.

2. Scientific mindset? While there isn't anything wrong with that I'm a bit confused as to what you mean? Do you mean you wish to become more learned in science or apply the scientific method to your life? (Which is... very simplified of a view in my opinion, the whole scientific method isn't exactly applicable to everything) or do you mean you wish to abscond more spiritual feelings for a more fact driven perspective? (And I am going to clarify, there is nothing wrong with being spiritual necessarily. People believe what they will believe.)

Well the only answer to that is you need to decide for yourself whats comfortable on that front. Your viewpoint comes from the combined factors of the culture you are raised in and your own experiences, whether you like it or not. The values you carry are influenced by these factors but in the end of the day the values you have are for you to determine, and its simple as that.

3. Simply talk to people. Be open to suggestions, but don't bend over backwards with ridiculous requests and just be wary of being exploited. Some of the best ways to socialize is just finding an activity to do or going to a job and just enjoying yourself with an activity with other people or working alongside them. Not everyone is good with words or social behaviour, but everyone has some sort of interests or hobbies. Search for groups that share the same interests as you- either online or offline.

4. "Chosen one significance"

Let me repeat to you an ancient Chinese proverb, paraphrased.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Focus on what will get you ahead right now, and just do well at school. You want to impact things? Then hit hard with improving yourself and don't squander your time. People accomplish things if they take the initiative for it and build up to it- you aren't going to be handed opportunities to do great things unless you work towards it. And this is the exact same for every person whose ever lived, even the sons and daughters of kings, queens, dictators, rich folk or whomever; if someone lacks initiative even the rich, powerful and famous tend to not be remembered for much beyond them being rich and famous.

You're gonna think big right now and that's fine and dandy- but you should focus on whats relevant to you right now, even if it is only to prepare for whatever long term goal you may set.

You want purpose? You must make your own purpose, find it. Because I'll be frank, and this is just my opinion, but there is no inherent "purpose" for anyone or anything beyond what we make of it. You believe what you will, but if you're wanting to be some "chosen one" as you put it, whether you believe in (what I believe to be, fickle and silly) notions of "destiny" or "fate" then you must also realize that in order to realize said things you must work hard for your goals.

A good way to start is just by improving yourself and finding things you enjoy, and pursuing your passions and go through it gradually.

Sometimes lying is useful. A better thing to learn is know when to lie, and know when it'll do more harm than good.

While it is hard to say, and as a white upper-middle class person in a Western country I definitely didn't have it hard growing up, the only thing I can say from my personal experience (and also from that of people more and less experienced than me) is that almost everything in life just takes time. Time and failure.

As someone who until the last few years was an extremely bitter person (you only need to ask almost any of the senior members here how much of an ass I was around 2007-2008, although there aren't too many left from those times), the only thing that really changed me was time. Time and failing, over and over again.

It took me almost four years of learning Chinese before I was really comfortable speaking in front of others, and even then I'm still not particularly capable. But I do try, and I do ask for feedback, and I failed (very often). But with every mistake I made I learnt two more things, and slowly but surely I progressed.

You can't really learn anything just by ready a profound passage or two. It can definitely inspire you to action, but from my experience you don't learn anything from your experience until it goes wrong. Learning to adjust to failure is probably the most important human skill we have as it interacts with almost every other aspect of our life – from relationships and dealing with other people (personal and platonic, to professional), to how you approach work, to how you develop yourself and help others.

Don't be afraid of failure, embrace it. Realise why you've failed and improve for the future. That is the one thing I truly wish I learnt better when I was younger, it would've changed far too many things for me to count. Don't wallow in self pity and wonder why you've failed or bar yourself from criticism. Try again and prove your critics, and yourself, wrong.

"Do you mean you wish to become more learned in science or apply the scientific method to your life?"

I originally meant "think like a scientist"because that's what i wanna be. Obtaining knowledge isn't much of a problem for me right now, the problem's that i can't seem to get further than lvl 2 on bloom's taxonomy(is the grammar correct?). Typical of most students my age in Malaysia, but well. It's still a problem.

@zhao speaking Chinese is pretty simple once you master the tones. Writing's much harder for me. Especially when it comes to 200 essays and that sorta stuff.

I do not know you as a person, so I can only give some general advice from experience, instead of specifics:

QUOTE (Jet02 @ 13 Feb 2017, 14:19) *
How to
1. Develop a common sense
2. Develop a scientific mindset
3. Socialize??(i'm an introvert)
4. Do something significant(i'm talking chosen one level significance here)

1. Common sense is the product of three things: Experience, curiosity and open-mindedness. The first comes with time, the second is something we all have by nature, but some individuals have to consciously allow themselves to be curious, i.e. actively pursue knowledge and explore the things they are, for any reason, interested in and not being prevent from doing so by silly conventions. Open-mindedness means, you should never put yourself exclusively in an echo chamber where your personal views and opinions are never challenged by or juxtaposed with others. It is normal to surround oneself with people who share certain ideas, but you should not go out of your way to avoid other opinions.

2. Ties in very much with the previous. Perhaps instead of scientific, 'sceptic' might be the more accurate term to describe the mindset. That is, take every information you see with a grain of salt, including the ones that correspond with your own political ideas or general world view. Apply a critical perspective to everything that tries to form an opinion, explore it from multiple angles and do not restrict yourself to narrow categories of thinking, such as political ideologies. Humans are emotional creatures, therefore emotion does play a relevant part in our decision-making, but always prioritise empirical facts.

3. Speaking as more of an introvert person myself, the only way to socialise is to socialise, really. Converse with people about things that you are interested in. Follow current events and news or expand your knowledge on matters of culture, politics, science, nature, history, art, etc, in order to expand your pool of reference and knowledge. This enables you to provide commentary and insights on a wider variety of conversation subjects which, if the person you're talking to is in any way likeminded about a certain subject or interest, allows for a more meaningful conversation and building a personal connection. Don't try to press yourself into a certain 'role' or 'style'. Be authentic and let conversations develop naturally if they do and go into social encounters with no pre-determined plan or goal of what it 'should be' about.

4. Most people do not go through life with the conscious decision that they want to do something world-changing on the scale that your question implies. They just live their life and don't think particularly far ahead. Just do the things you like, acquire knowledge, develop meaningful connections with other people and see where it takes you. If you see an opportunity to do a good or noteworthy thing, consider the consequences and do that thing if your brains, guts and heart are in agreement. Simply put, going around with the set goal of 'I want to do a big, chosen one level thing' is too unspecific. It is ambition without direction, which only leads to bad decisions and disappointment. Instead, try to be a decent person. Read and think about ethics, develop a moral framework for yourself and assess what matters to you in life, what makes you happy and what is, fundamentally, important to you. Whether you, or I, or anyone on this forum will ever do something hugely significant is not something we consciously plan out for ourselves. If the circumstances allow for it to happen, and the individual realises this and acts accordingly, they may do something significant. Note that significant in and of itself does not mean it has to be a good thing, either. If you ever get the chance to do something significant, only act upon that chance if it is towards a good end.

I don't know if this little bit of kitchen sink psychology is in any way helpful or not, but it's my honest, well-intentioned attempt at answering your questions.

I'm actually the direct opposite, I find it far easier to read/type (not so much write by hand, but I can do that too...) Chinese than it is to speak, probably because I'm a very visual person so the characters are actually not that hard for me to remember. I'm also quite introverted, so I don't particularly like speaking much in my native language (English) either. My original second language was Swiss German, which I've mostly forgotten now and replaced with Chinese and fortunately the word structure of German is fairly similar to Chinese so I never really had any trouble with the grammar/word construction or anything either.

Believe it or not I'm about as white as white comes, I'm not Chinese or ABC, I'm of Anglo/Swiss ancestry. I'm just absorbed into Chinese culture as I've been working for Chinese companies for around 5 years now, and most of the people I know outside of my biological family are all mainland Chinese who came to Australia for university/work.

Well, I think in his context he means 'graduation' as high school graduation, not university. He lists his birthdate in 2002, which is also still in school.

Also, considering the fact that the pace at which the world progresses is times faster than it was when i was born, i don't think waiting for time to change me is a valid option. After all, to quote damfoos,

"Suddenly, f-35!!"

Good thing is i know what's going on, what's good for me and what isn't. Bad thing is all those thoughts just disappear once i start doing anything else.

"On the quantum level, matter starts to act in a manner undescribable by classical physics until it interacts with its environment"(I'm paraphrasing btw. That isn't exactly how it works, but that's another topic for another day)

My mind in a nutshell. Lots of thinking, lots of imagination till i speak to someone. Or type something. Then it all drops to zero.

Well, each of the tasks that you wan tot achieve and quite unusual and I would say... interesting to achieve. I do not know you much really but I'll try to help you without using formatted answers and cheap sentences.

1. - I would say, do not believe in everything that people say, and don't be too much trusting in authorities. People are people and we all are generally weird. Be curious but also questioning.

2. - I would say, try to find a scientific topic that interests you and develop it further. Try to read some books for example, if you are interested in mathematics, find some books about them written by professors, see their writing style and overall way of thinking. If you are thinking about processing information in the academic way you could search the Internet for some examples of BA paper works. My advice is try to find a field that really interests you. When I was a early high schooler, I used to read Wikipedia a lot. While it might not be a super source of information but the wealth of information helped me to broaden my horizons. Although I struggled a bit but I eventually developed a interest in linguistics and now I am close to graduating from University.

3. - Well, I am a introvert myself and large numbers of people make me feel tired/scared. I remember how I was encouraged to go to parties when in high school even though I personally never liked the atmosphere. What I can say is, don't do something if you don't want to do it. Now I might not have like 100+ friends, but my close friends are those on which I can really count on.

4. - First significant thing that I did was one of my first private attempting at developing a video game back when I was in the middle school. The concept and the looks might not have been A class material, but I was really happy of my progress in the artistic field. You should learn which you like the most, experiment and don't give up if your first attempts fail. I made hilarious mistakes before I started to translate indie video games and mods into various European languages. Don't give up and don't fall into pressure if somebody says that your project is worthless

I hope I managed to help you in some way. smile.gif Remember to have hope and walk with joy through you life!

I would say all European universities are ´decentˋ but I guess it depends on your perception of that word. Yes, and I am quite close to graduating from one. How is life on such a university? Pretty nice although honestly the academic level is not extraordinary high in my Uni. But then again, if I would go to Japan or to a more prestigious private university around here I would have to work and study more. University life is largely divided between studying and having fun overall. Writing your own research reports and other own work, having a internship in a government agency in my example and the like. It is lovely. Do you want to know anything specific?
