SWR Productions Forum _ Rise of the Reds _ Question about Russian Conscripts.

Posted by: nukebox 31 Jan 2018, 14:11

I was wondering why Russian conscripts were using AK-74s instead of AK-12s. Not requesting for it to be changed. But I'm just asking.

I want lore wise answers OK? Thank you.

No lore reason, really. They have been depicted as using AK-74s for years before the AK-12 was even shown for the first time and it was considered such a minor detail that it was and likely will never be changed. Suppose if you wanted to look at it from a lore angle, you could always assume that Russia just has massive stockpiles of AK-74s to arm all the conscripts that are called into service during WW3. Realistically though, neither the AK-74 nor the AK-12 would be credible standard issue weapons for something that's set in the late 2040s, which goes for most of the in-game hardware throughout all factions.

True true. Thanks for the reply. I guess it makes sense why.

Well as I see it the technology available makes trying to field newer military tech kind of pointless. No matter what you do to increase the armour of your tanks, it won't do much good when nuclear artillery is called down on your tanks. Build stronger aircraft? Wotans/Cyclops will just have to crank up the power. And so on.

As I see it the military scientists are hitting a brick wall in their development because the limits of physics are starting to tell them there is nothing they can make that can't be overcome by existing weapons. Bigger weapons are also pointless because they become overkill. Even the most powerful weapons are tactical, for taking out enemy positions/forces. Bigger weapons will just increase the collateral damage.

The conscripts are a slightly different case since they probably won't live much longer in battle if they had a AK-12 so it isn't worth the cost. As I understand it they are incredibly poorly trained.

Can I also give a lazier explanation?

ROTR's timeline has been pushed 20 years to the future due to zero hour, It was meant to be a 2020+ universe but due to ZH taking place in the 2000-2020's, so Its 2040's

Now this mod has alot of symbolic or key things in the arsenal, such as the Tunguska, all of USA's ZH units like the humvee etc etc

originally the Ak-47 is a legend, Its amazing, Its something that'll never be forgotten, however its from the 40's-60's...There has been many upgrades and Improvements.

Im going to throw a bone and say that the AK-74 sort of nods that the weapon they carry is in the same spirit and soul of the ones who used the 47 like a century ago,

Ak-12 might be nice but...12? 12 means nothing, It may be an upgrade but its not an update or improvement on the original one

heres an Image that sorta explains it,

Again Mars'es explanation is the best one, mine is abit of head cannon

^ That's actually true too. Originally, Gens/ZH was set in a vague 2000s/2010s timeframe, but when we designed the ROTR timeline, we found that we had to stretch things out a bit further lest there would be too many key events in just a few short years. As a result, the ROTR timeline places the events of Gens/ZH between 2019 and 2028, with the ECA and Russia becoming world powers throughout the 2030s and sliding towards conflict in the early 2040s, with WW3 breaking it in 2045. Realistically, that period in the 21st century would probably see a style of first world power warfare that is very much unlike the present. ROTR's tech is generally on a level fitting the late period of the Cold War to the present, with occasional bits of anachronism (50s style heavy tanks and ECA prototype weaponry being the two ends of the spectrum), but that which is depicted as rare high-tech in ROTR's 2040s would probably be a lot more mainstream for first world armies around the actual middle of the century. Large, heavy ground vehicles may become largely obsolete, because you can fit incredible destructive power into precision-guided munitions that can be carried by much smaller, cheaper, agile platforms or even other kinds of smart munitions. The emphasis on precision weapons would be countered by sophisticated point defence systems while many militaries will rely heavily on drones and robots to compensate for their shrinking/aging populations.

I thought they are using the AN94 assault rifles.
and PKP Pecheneg machine guns

Because AN 94s are desiged from 80s and are in service in 1997-present, and ROTR time is nearly on 2040, i think, and the AK 12 are from 2014-present. I think are for the years of difference between those assault rifles.

PKP Pecheneg too.

Oh yes, an extremely complex rifle had supplanted a simple and ubiquitous one :V

Posted by: MARS 11 Mar 2018, 16:04

The AN94 is a lot more complex and expensive than the AK74, which Russia has in ubiquitous supply by comparison. It's not the kind of weapon you would issue to what is ostensibly a conscript army with only average training and discipline, as indicated by what the conscripts are like in-game. There was a story bit that mentioned the AN94 being used by Russian special forces during an incident in Alaska however.

Even then AN 94 will probably be a rare sight on the battlefield. It really doesn't offer much beside two-round burst at 1800 rpm and its drawbacks are numerous - it's heavier than AK, more complex, more expensive, prone to jamming, impossible to repair in the field. IRL Russian spec ops only issued it on individual basis and it didn't gain any popularity. Customized AKs and 9x39 chambered assualt rifles outperform it consistently.

i have one thing i would to add:
well... if is possible to make consripts a bit more expensive raise their specs hps dmg ect, because they look well armed than rebels, its just an cosmetic thing happy.gif

1. That's not what cosmetic means, cosmetic implies no stat changes
2. That is a dumb reason to change something

EDIT: Sorry everyone, I couldn't help it.

Well, they're better equipped than Rebels to be sure.

They're also basically given an HD Video telling them which part of the gun to point at enemies, then told to shoot anything that doesn't wear maroon, and a boot out of the back of the truck/helicopter they came in on.
