SWR Productions Forum _ ShockWave _ Serious Error while trying to start the game

Posted by: OhaahO 7 Nov 2016, 15:41

Hello,

I am new to this forum but have a lot of experience in modding Shockwave. One of the most commen problems with this game is the Serious Error. You have installed the game, put some mods and get and error. Or you have been modding some files and get the error.

I have found a way to find out why the error is comming. On the computer, in C:\Users\Username\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data there is a file called ReleaseCrashInfo.txt. In this file you van see what kind of error you get.
For my modding, I use FinalBIG to extract the .big files. (editing the .BIG files itself is inadvisable and i would suggest that you make a backup of those .big files that you are editing.) I also uses Notepad++ to edit the .ini files that are inside the .big files.

I am playing multiple mods at the same time. I have Zero Hour from Origin and i found a way to get multiple mods work in the same directory.

If I get those Serious Error message, the first thing I check is if the other mod(s) is also active. (.big means the mod is active).
For example I want to play ROTR and have in the data/ini the extracted files of ShockWave, because i edit them very much. I have another place on my computer where i have the complete data/ini map. I remove the data/ini from the Zero Hour map and put it in this other map.
After that, i try to start the game again. If i get this Serious Error again, I check if i have no other mods active. (.big means active, the big files from the mods are recognizable by the name of the game (like !Shw, !Rotr, !DF etc.))
If there is another active mod (because i played ROTR the last time i played the game and I want to play Shockwave.), i rename the .big file to .gib. FinalBIG can read this file just like a .big file, but it is not active.

The Worldbuilder will find most errors that are in the game. I use a combination of the Worldbuilder and Notepad++ to find exactly where the error is and what the error is.

I hope that this message wil help a lot of people that come here at this forum. Not only members, but also guests.

Or, you can do https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PAHX8Z3GL_BxkdoiAf0QxOzEqJsgTF_eoh0CrGFtpQU/edit?usp=sharing, and play/mod all the mods without having to juggle all their files tongue.gif
