More awesome than an imploding star and a burning car combined

I was just wondering how you make textures for your models

I'm pretty good at making the models themselves, but I really don't know how to do their textures.
I tried skinning one or two, but they all looked really really bland (probably because i did all my textures on paint laugh.gif )

I was just wondering if you guys could maybe teach me, or give me some tips, on making textures?

I have a number of programs, including paint.net, firealpaca, and adobe photoshop (I never really learned how to use it though)
Thanks!!

Photoshop or GIMP are your best bets. Search for tutorials on the net and search for websites that offer textures, if you want a more realistic look. I cannot really help much with it, I've made like 3 textures total in my life and they all weren't so good either.

Try this for uvw unwrapping.

This tutorial is for general texture making.

Making skins is a matter of simply making or downloading good quality base textures, e.g. wood, metal, cloth, etc. then colouring them in photoshop and adding details such as armour panels (by using bevel tool) and so forth. If need help, let me know, maybe we can arrange a time to meet on skype and ill show u.

What about adding little details like boxes, insignimas, flags, and such?

Uniqueness is Overrated

Boxes can be made by using layers with bevels and shadows. Flags and insignias are basically just cut and paste.

You can either use brushes or the pen tool for insignias, depending on what you are going for. Shapes are essentially an extension of the pen tool.

^^What the two other said.

But if you want to add 3d flags and other 'misc' items to spice things up, just repeat the early steps which CoLT and Madin linked to you.

Also, search deviantart.com and other various sites via google for photoshop brushes. A good set of brushes will really help to add nice details like scratches, burns, and other markings to your textures.

What about tank treads and wheels? I mean, to save polies, people make the tank treads and wheels one big object, but how do u make the texture for it?

Make a small (preferably 64x64 or any other square multiple res) texture that repeats. For example, tank treads are simply a repeating colour pattern that is supposed to look like treads.
