QUOTE !@#$ YOU BIOWARE
Thanks a lot Bioware. Because Dragon Age is so freaking awesome, you've gotten my sister (I'm a triplet) into gaming. I bought the game last friday, and she now has over 25 hours into it, twice than mine. SHE IS AHEAD OF ME AND THREATENING TO TELL ME SPOILERS. Why Bioware, why? And guess what? Seeing how much fun games are now, she's starting to play TF2. /suicide. -------------------- |

QUOTE if you in the morning at half past three dead drunk standing outside my door, then that is okay. If you storm ring, then that is okay. If you then rush to the bathroom and you upchuck there, then that's okay too. But if you go into the living room, shit on the carpet and stick Toothpicks in it. Then shout: "HEY, THE HEDGEHOG NOW LIVES HERE!" Then it's just too much. Please rethink your behavior! A girl on Studi VZ Translated from German -------------------- |

Refrigerator has 5 syllables and is a completely legitimate word, therefore it is fine for both an opening and a closing line in an haiku.
Besides that, it's a bit odd that you called the same haiku both 'not bad' and 'fail'. By the way, your top example isn't a haiku either. Itself is two syllables taking the total of that line to six, and haiku is two syllables as well, taking the total to seven, and the middle line only has six syllables. Regardless of the language, it's always 5-7-5. I was quite active in the haiku channel in Kingdom of Loathing years ago. This post has been edited by Alias: 10 Dec 2009, 22:49 -------------------- |

I noticed what you mean. I learned a Haiku as consisting of 11 syllables thus I assumed the poem given by IonCharge as being correct with the word refrigerator as the one who wrote it (5+6 thus win). The shirt showing 5+7=12 syllables thus failed. Checking wikipedia now has shown me you are correct (thus the shirt wins now) and my teacher talking BS.

Who cares what is right or wrong? As long it motivates people to learn, write and grow culturally.

Wrong is subjective to begin with. Alas that comment wasn't entirely directed at haiku per se but rather all of cultural aspects of society. Wrong is a synonym for deviate which brings about change which caused many wonderful things over the centuries. Every advancement scientifically, culturally and even spiritually we made was from swerving from the norm.
