I found it rather annoying but after abit of looking around i found a plugin how to get rid of it here :
http://www.seotools.com/hide-google-options/index.htm it works for both firefox and chrome just thought i'd share

Indeed the side bar is annoying, however other new features on it are useful

if you dislike it you can simply right click on it to uninstall it

There is a way to remove it. For EVERYONE, go to search prefrences. Now change the language to pirate or elmer fudd. Now you can close the sidebar.
