United States of America, 2017

This is Monica De La Rosa from SNN, bringing to you the latest news of what is happening in the world today.

Asia. Chinese state media made public the latest advancements of the People's Liberation Army during a weapons expo in Shanghai this week. Aside from new combat vehicles such as the ZTZ-200 'Overlord' tank and an improved production model of the J-20 'Phoenix' fifth generation stealth fighter, Chinese manufacturer 'Steelrain' has also presented a series of domestically produced multi-barrel rotary cannons. The weapons, ranging from 5.8mm to 30mm calibers, are marketed as the 'Gattling' series in what appears to be a play on the famous Gatling gun, invented by Richard Jordan Gatling during the American civil war, which has been further developed into a number of modern electrically powered autocannons. Several such weapons are used by the US military and the American manufacturer has filed a lawsuit against these Gattling series on the basis of copyright infringement. Despite this, it is expected that the weapons will be implemented in a number of combat vehicles, aircraft and even as an infantry weapon which is expected to enter trials with the PLA Marine Corps soon.

The second announcement, not less controversial, concerns about two new aircrafts that very soon, according to the PLA Air Force, will be part of the Chinese military aviation, the fighter MiG and the assault helicopter Helix. The Russian Secretary of Defense attended the expo and signed a high-profile deal with his Chinese counterpart. After the end of the meeting the Secretary was asked by a journalist. "Russia does not believe that China is going to make use of these aircraft against any Asian nation very soon?" Russian Secretary of Defense. "No, we do not believe that China will go to attack any nation in Asia, we are only providing the necessary tools for lasting peace in the region; it is apparent to both our governments that the Pacific has become an important playing field for American geostrategic interests, as evidenced by the ongoing militarization of Japan, which is a great concern to our Chinese allies. It is therefore in Russia's best interest to strengthen our ties to ensure stability in Asia and beyond".

Meanwhile, the government of Japan has observed the most recent series of North Korean rocket tests with great concern. North Korean state media have also issued a statement from dictator Kim Jong Un that "the Japanese Prime Minister is a westernized puppet worthy of disgust, and the Emperor is nothing more than a decaying leprous old man." The US government has urged the Chinese government to exert its influence on Pyongyang to the cease immediately escalation in the region.

Europe. The 'gas war' involving Russia and the European Union continues. Without reaching an agreement on the fair price for Russian gas the EU studies implement a 'revolutionary' energetic alternative to meet the demand. Amid more this episode about the gas dispute the United States proposed to develop in conjunction with the Western European new reactors based on nuclear fusion - the newest, most modern and safe technology, improved in the last decade for power generation in America, replacing most of the old past-century conventional nuclear reactors. According to the renowned French scientist Gerald Fontaine the European Union should further increase its scientific cooperation with the USA in the field of fusion in the next decade but the austerity measures the EU should delay these plans and no European ruler in fact believes that this time such a project with the USA can advance significantly. Fontaine explains why the importance of Europe became independent of the historical problem of Russian gas. "The deterioration of Russia's post-Soviet democracy and its past aggressions against the likes of Georgia and Ukraine should make it clear to us that the Russian Federation can no longer be considered a reliable partner in our energy infrastructure. Europe needs to become independent of their gas, either with the help of the USA through fusion, or independently, seeking a new alternative energy source, we need to find a place in the sun; but I know now we are not living a good moment..." Said Fontaine. The Russian Ministry of Energy does not seem to be too concerned with the alternative project of the EU to become independent of the gas, since planning to keep the same aliquot set last year under the system of prepayment.

Meanwhile, the most recent series of western sanctions are taking a toll on the Russian economy; large steelmakers, chemical, automotive and electronic industries charge the President to a bolder policy that stimulates increased growth of the sector; in short-term option does not seem to be a solution to these problems, which explains the pessimism of the speculative market. The Kremlin's speech advocates a promising future below the permafrost of Siberia and the arctic zone - still unexplored due to the commitment to 'environmental issues'. But words have not been enough to calm the market down that needs urgent help. But not all industries of Russia are lost in recession: the Kalashnikov military factory signed a high-profile agreement with the Republic of Tajikistan to supply up to a million AK-pattern assault rifles and advanced anti-tank rockets; the only problem in sight is how to all of these weapons will be delivered to the Tajik government that facing a bloody civil war against the revolutionaries led by General Mohmar Deathstrike; since last week a convoy of more than 30 Russian military trucks carrying supplies was ambushed and looted by rebels after traveling just 65 km after crossing the border.

America. On a visit to Turkey the American Secretary of State, Edward Miller, checked together with its Turkish partner the progress of the Ordu Maximum Security Prison - the first of three prisons that the USA should build in the country until 2020 as part of the new security treaty signed between the two countries. On occasion Miller reaffirmed the commitment of his government with Turkey and commented about the construction progress. "Everything is going as planned, and 75% of the prison facility is completed. When completed will have the capacity to imprison up to 3,000 men under maximum security. Our people know what that means: the right to freedom and democracy, and more security for the United States and Turkey against global terrorism". Miller ended his visit in Incirlik Air Base, where a small leftist group chanted slogans against the anti-terrorist policies conducted by the Secretary. Fortunately after the arrival of the police there were no incidents and the protesters were dispersed.

The NTSB investigation on the tragic air disaster of the African Airlines Flight 563 that killed the President Jamapinang and other rulers of Madagascar proceed. According primary sources the hypothesis of a human/mechanic error was recently dismissed. Now openly speaks of a terrorist attack using shoulder-fired missiles. The Pentagon claims to have irrefutable evidence that terrorists disguised as fishermen in a boat would have been the perpetrators of the attack against the Boeing. If the final result of the investigations point to a terrorist attack the probabilities of preemptive strikes against terrorist targets in the Central Africa will increase exponentially, said an anonymous source from the Pentagon. Yet no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
