This is the laptop I'm getting for use during my 4 years of undergrad study at college next year. All students are required to purchase this laptop, and we get to keep it for forever. Comes with technical support and a crap-load of engineering software (Autocad, 3ds max, etc.). Best part about it? The student discount.
The laptop selected for the 2010 academic year is the Lenovo W510. The specifications selected by Rose-Hulman are below: Processor Intel Quad Core i7 720QM, 1.6 GHz RAM 4 GB (1067 MHz) DDR3 (2 DIMM) Hard Drive SATA 160 GB 7200 RPM Optical Drive DVD+/-RW Optical Drive Display 15.6-inch FHD 1920x1080 with Multi Touch Video Card nVIDIA FX 880M graphics with 1GB memory Network Cards Integrated Gigabit Ethernet, Intel Centrino 6300 Adnvanced -N Wireless supports 802.11 a/g/n, Bluetooth 2.0+ Battery 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery USB USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports Pointing Devices Touchpad Pointstick Firewire 1 Firewire Port Integrated Webcam Webcam built into display Secure Digital 1 Secure Digital Slot Comment. The actual laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad, aka "The Big Plastic Brick". But hey, I'll accept the shell, given what's inside. I have a better card but a worse processor, and I can run just about anything released in the last few years on high with exception to Crysis and other processor-whores.

My new laptop is somewhere in between OP's and Raptor's.
It's pretty damn good but I probably should have shelled out a bit more to get an i7 processor. |
