So Windows 10 releases today. Is anybody gonna get it?
I have pre-ordered my free version; I think this is gonna be a good thing. Really all I want is the old Start menu back, and since Windows 10 has a sazzier version of it, I'm all ears.
This expressed my thoughts for the greater part:
I don't care much for a shiney interface but rather functionality and right now windows 7 has all the functionality i need.
Considering that my Win7 install is years old by now and worthy to be reinstalled, I'll give a go to Win10 on that partition. I heard pretty good stuff about it so far, so i'm really interested in the performance. Worst case, I'll keep my Linux as main OS for now.
Since I recently built a new system I had the Windows 10 preview installed there for around two weeks, and had the production version installed for the last few days. The experience of the system is much better than Windows 8, and I can't really comment on the usability of it compared to that because I never used Windows 8 for long.
Functionality wise, however, support is still very flaky at best. A lot of drivers crashed every one or two days, sometimes more. My audio was stuttering for every few minutes for about 5 seconds. The CPU management seems to also have some problems, for some reason a lot of the time it idled my 4690 at 30%+ when doing no serious tasks, but Windows was reporting a substantial amount of page faults.
Today I reformatted again and installed Windows 7 like I had before, and the performance is much better. The CPU idles at around 5% and I'm not getting any page faults any more, I've yet to have any driver problems and there is zero audio stutter.
If you are thinking of upgrading I'd recommend waiting a few months while hardware companies sort out proper drivers and while Microsoft sorts out the remaining bugs.
While rare, I agree on most of these points. It's best to wait until the typical problems are ironed out and new software patches have been released by the various companies out there. That said, Microsoft seems to follow their awesome-fail waveform pattern as usual.
It still seems to be a failstart atleast. My best friend got both of his PCs frozen beyond useable earlier today completely, so I'd guess that's a +1 to Alias.
I'll rather wait for a few years before i finally bother with windows 10; just like what i did when i migrated from Windows XP to Windows 7.
For now, i pretty much agree with what hunter said.
I actually planned to get the win10 key first by reserving the upgrade, but probably wont upgrade it anytime near.
but I got a little problem that I got no win10 button in my taskbar, although I use win8.1 and have installed all the updates. I'm also pretty sure my windows is eligible one for upgrade.
meh, still have a year to go before the promo ended.
I'm using it on my 3y old laptop that has medicore specs, no major issues so far. Google Chrome was derping in the first days, a lot of downloads never finished (but I guess they fixed it since I'm not having that issue anymore) and the driver of my external sound card doesn't work because the manufacturer didn't release a win10 version yet. All the crucial drivers work fine. I'm also noticing slight performance improvement when playing.
So yeah, I'm pretty positive so far, but I guess that no 2 PCs are the same so while I'll be probably considered lucky by some, I can understand the negativity when stuff starts failing on it.
Im well pissed off. I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and now i cant play the poxy ROTR. Does anyone know what or how to fix this? Is their a fix?
I should of stayed with w8.1 !!!!
Im about to buy a new computer and have the choice of windows 7 or 10.Im comfortable with 7 and would be happy to stick with it, but Ill change if 10 is worth the effort.Help would be appreciated.
