I remotely remember having a old writings thread back when the forum was first created... but I want to let that stuff sink into the past. Just so happens that right now there's a literature fervor with ROTR, so I might as well pick up writing again.

Anyways, now that I'm in a writing mood again, I might start posting quite some stuff here. The first series would be a vGen->ZH fan fiction in writing, more or less. Hopefully, I will finish that before summer ends. As a side note, I probably will post all sorts of stuff in here, including but not limited to: digital paintings, analog paintings/sketches, school progress, all that shit.

Someone keep pushing me to write stuff. I've developed a really bad habit of not finishing what I started, so yeah, I have email notifications on.

Series One: The Red Tide (cliches eh)

Synopsis: In a nation as massive and diverse as the People's Republic of China, change takes a long time, be it the fall of a dynasty and the rise of another or the economic, cultural and socio-political consequences of revolutionary programs pioneered by the government. The Modern Way program led by Cheung Liu and the new Party leaders was no different from Deng Xiaoping's Economic Reforms; it would take at least two to three decades to penetrate most and not all of Mainland China, two more generations to change the population and the culture. Yet, when the nation's western borders are threatened by separatists backed by shadowy figures and vicious fundamentalists, what would the young leaders of the "New China“ do?

The only answer never changed: the complete and utter destruction of all those that threaten the Nation, the People and the Party.

Good start, but here's an important detail from ROTR canon (presuming that this is supposed to be ROTR-related)
Modern Way was enacted after the Taiwan crisis and subsequent leadership change in 2018, by the new Chairman Zhao Wei. Unfortunately, the Chairman was among those who died when the GLA nuked Beijing and while his successors did continue with his policies, some of them, including the current (as of the early 2040s) Chairman Cheung Liu, have added a more militaristic/expansionist side to it: China itself may have modernised itself in regard to civil liberties and - nominally - freedom of press, but they do not necessarily extend that degree of social/political progress to the treatment of their GAPA 'allies'.

Everything's kinda "In Progress" right now, so I'm not sure if this is going to be ROTR related yet... meh. Thank you for the information though, it probably will come in handy.

Note that not everything will follow the Generals/ZH universe, especially equipment; as much as it distinguishes the three factions in-game, I try to make sure that the equipment are only used when it is logical, eg. the elite Chinese infantry won't fight with a SKS battle rifle, but rather with a Type 95 Assault Rifle, etc.

Chapter One: The Dragon Awakes
Part 1 - The end of the ordinary
Beijing was not known as an environmentally friendly city. Despite government measures, incentives and community efforts, the clean skies that graced the ancient capital on summer 2008 simply never returned after the once-in-a-lifetime event. If one think about the reason, the answer would be obvious; a city that had to support 20+ million people - about two-thirds of the population of Canada - and some of the largest heavy industry complexes of the New China will never be totally clean and tidy. The far suburbs, however, were a different matter; the city proper did hold more than 90% of its inhabitants, but occupied around only 10% of the total area of the administrative city itself. As thus, in the far-flung suburbs such as Changping, Daxing and Miyun, the skies were somewhat smoggy, but nowhere nearly as foggy and toxicating as inside the Ring Roads.

And so, on this fairly sunny day with a 20% chance of light shower, Sergeant and Driver Liu Chengxing of the 38th Army, 6th Armor Division, 23rd Brigade trained alongside his comrades as usual, commencing combat maneuvers in the hilly suburbs. Were this to be any other day, he would just take it as part of the duty and obligations to protect the People. Not today, however. Even though the air conditioning inside the Type 99-M (Mountain Type, refitted with a more compact chassis and a 105mm smoothbore gun instead of the standard, long-barreled 125mm maingun) Main Battle Tank was turned to a chilling 20 degrees Celsius, his still sweated and exhaled like an old horse forced to run the mill again. In one part it was because of the heavy duty tanker's uniform and helmet that enclosed himself like the rest of the vehicle crew, and in another part it was due to the fact that today was hotter than the usual October days. Taking the helmet off is strictly prohibited, and as a member of the Division whose forefathers were part of the Long March, he knew better. The radio chatters coming from the helmet's earphones were standard; tanks were coordinated into 4-vehicle formations and commenced competitive combat maneuvers, with points given to the first formation to complete the difficult trek including subjects such as 180-degree spins, target acquisition on the move while crossing a moat and the like. Maneuvers like these required every nerve in his brain to focus on the objectives ahead, and yet, he found it difficult.

He couldn't let go of that feeling. October 1st, 2019. All the citizens in the People's Republic know what this date meant. And so, when the tanks of the 21st Brigade were off in Tiananmen Square, commencing a parade in front of the People and the entire Politburo, he's here with the unfortunate comrades of the 22nd and 23rd Brigades, doing training if only because they had nothing else better to do. The leading cadre had its reason to order their training though, Captain of the Tank - Staff Sergeant Wang Yao told him; the fervor of Tibet and Xinjiang isolationists had finally exhausted the Party's patience, and although Wang didn't know any better, he reasoned that they were probably being trained in preparation for redeployment to Tibet. "Well, it's unfortunate that we can't watch the Parade back in the barrack, but an order's an order. If we have to pull a training day on October 1st, we follow the orders." He concluded, several days before.

But still... why can't we at least watch the Parade, or better, be part of the Parade... Liu murmured to himself, and fortunately, the booming sounds of the tread and the engine muffled his complaints. The radio, however, continued to transfer orders into his ear, and so he shut his mouth and followed the order of Captain Wang. The immediate scenario is target acquisition at 1500m while cruising at 40kph on a 30 degree hill, and although speed wasn't hard to maintain, he still had to slightly push the control stick towards the right in order to maintain a balanced center of mass as the behemoth turned its 105mm cannon towards targets 1.5 kilometres away, hidden in the bushes and the forest. Being the driver was a little easier on him; he would still feel confused by the infrared target scope that Gunner - Sergeant Li Jun were using at that moment. Like the standard model, the Mountain Type vehicles were equipped with an autoloader by default, and all Li had to do was aim, let the hydraulics and the computer take over, obey the Captain's orders and fire. That was exactly what happened the moment he pressed the button; a single HE shell raced out of the barrel, made the slightest curve in the air due to gravity, and impacted the concrete target 1.5 kilo away in less than a second. Training ammunition contains much less explosives than a combat-ready HE shell, but it still made a wonderful "puff" on the target acquisition scope. "Target destroyed. Move on to the next----"

SSG Wang was about to order SGT Li to acquire the next target, but a sudden radio malfunction created a piercing noise that resonated in the entire crew's ears. What followed shortly was certainly not an equipment malfunction, though; the base commander came online directly. "All vehicles, this is Colonel Cai of the 23rd Armor Brigade! All vehicles, abort the training session immediately and return to the armory! We have a major security breach in Beijing, and this is not a drill! I repeat, this is Colonel Cai of the 23rd Armor Brigade! All vehicles, abort the training session immediately and return to the armory! This is not a drill!" An eerie but short silence settled in before SSG Wang gave his orders: "Driver, take us back to base at maximum cruise speed! I will radio the Company Command Vehicle!" "Yes sir!"

When the muddy tank returned to the service depot, Liu couldn't believe what he saw through the driver's windows. The ammunition supply trucks and fuel trucks were already at standby, and some of the tanks that arrived earlier have already started refueling and supplying ammunition. He gave it another look, and what he saw wasn't very calming: the ammo being loaded were regular HE shells and depleted uranium kinetic penetrator rounds in exchange for the training rounds being hauled out of the back of the turret, and even some fuel air explosives shells were being handed to the vehicles, while the tank captains nervously gathered before the stout, grizzled figure that stood in front of the brigade's combat command vehicle. As soon as he parked the tank, the Captain simply shouted "Stay in the tank and be prepared to move out at any time" and jumped out of his private hatch. Liu carried out the standard procedures of shutting the engine down for refuel, and behind him, Li busily configured the autoloader to ammunition supply mode in order to swap out the ordinances.

It didn't take long before the logistics crew finished the maintenance of the tanks; even before they finished, dozens of tank transports have started to appear in front of the gathered tanks. Liu reckoned that these vehicles could transport their entire brigade, along with the 22nd, to Beijing inside an hour or less if they left right now. However, he was still troubled, not over the fact that his brigade didn't get to participate in the Parade: if they were prepping combat loads, what would their comrades of the 21st Brigade, weaponless in the middle of Beijing, do to whatever the hell that might have happened in the single most heavily defended event across China? "Hey, Lijun (The Chinese people frequently refer to acquaintances and colleagues by full name; as thus it is shortened here), what the hell could happen in Beijing during the Parade?"

"The hell do I know? I just graduated out of training a year ago!" Li Jun was equally worried and frustrated; half his family were in Beijing, the rest in Shanghai. "I just hope that this isn't the Americans finally showing up because of the way good old Chairman Xi handled the Taihai problem (Taiwan Haixia, the Taiwan Strait). Besides, how the hell would the Americans just airdrop their military into Beijing without the Air Force intercepting them south of Japan or something? We have two carrier battle groups, numberless AFB's and even more AAA around the coast that nothing could come through, right?"

"Something came through, and you don't want to know the details." Wang jumped back into the tank, and ordered Liu to get the tank on to the transport. "We're gonna get to Haidian District following G7, and I'll brief you two on the way. Let's get moving! Beijing's a battlefield right now!" He didn't show it much in his voice, but Wang's daughter - a 10-year-old attending one of the more extraordinary elementary schools in Beijing - was supposed to be part of the Civil Parade that would follow right after the Military Parade. Although Liu couldn't see the face of the commander as he parked the tank on the back of the transport vehicle, he was certain that like all others, he grimaced at this impossible news.

Chapter One: The Dragon Awakes
Part 2 - Fallout

The convoy that sped down highway G7, consisting of tank transport vehicles carrying the Type-99M MBT's and seven of the 21st Brigade's backup Type-99B MBT's and guarded by Type 95 Self-Propelled Anti-Air Artillery of the AA Brigade as well as several Type-04 and Type-09 IFV's, stopped quite suddenly just short of the Third Ring Road. The convoy experienced some temporary traffic congestion when detouring to highway G6; that was the only highway capable of supporting the complete mobilization of three armor brigades into a modern metropolis's downtown area.

The truck driver radioed the Captain, who then ordered Liu to disembark the tank from the transport. As he maneuvered the 48-ton beast delicately, Liu gained a glimpse of what would trouble him for months, if not years to come.

What he expected to see were battered buildings and rising smoke, since that was what a normal soldier would expect.

What he saw was a dirt-brown mushroom cloud that was still slowly rising from the ground, 50 minutes after the convoy set out. Closest to the still-standing elevated highway were half-destroyed buildings that were without roof, glass or bricks, and the further he gazed out the little windshield, the more destroyed the buildings became, until where were none at the horizon. It didn't require any more explanation than that; the moment he saw those debris and the cloud, Liu realized one terrible truth. Beijing, the capital of his nation, was nuked on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the New China. The Forbidden Palace, the Tiananmen Square, the Great Hall of the People, the National Center for the Performing Arts... they were all gone, razed to the ground by the sheer destruction of a nuclear weapon.

"Is... no, this couldn't really have happened..."

"It did." Wang sounded even more desperate than what Liu wanted to hear. "Not the US, but someone nuked Beijing, and killed millions of Chinese citizen already, including our comrades of the 21st Brigade. Our orders are to search and rescue possible survivors from the nuclear blast, civilian or military. The last transmission of the 21st Brigade also stated that there were unidentified armed forces opening fire on the Parade formations, so stay on alert."

"Search and Rescue huh... then the only possible places would be the subway stations. Not that it's going to protect them a lot from a nuclear blast."

Fortunately, the 38th Army is one of the most elite army groups in the entire nations, and thus all its vehicles have been updated to be on-par with their NATO and Russian counterparts, which include NBC filtration. As long as the three-persons crew stayed inside their vehicle and completely isolated themselves from the environment, they will live as long as they want to. "The nuke was small - division HQ estimated that it was only a kiloton-grade weapon, so sturdier structures as well as the subway system, especially lines 1 and 2, would certainly have survived the blast. As for the radiation... let's not get ahead of ourselves yet." Wang attempted to pose his cool, logical side to the two other soldiers in the now completely isolated tank, but everyone in the tank knew what he knew; his daughter, and most likely his wife would not have survived the explosion. Liu's heart was feeling quite cold as well; his parents as well as many of his high-school friends lived around the Third Ring Road to the south. As for gunner Li, his entire family should be in Tianjin, so he wasn't as worried as the other two were. Still, the subdued mood inside the vehicle was not broken until Li noticed an enormous object that was too intact to be considered a normal object in a nuclear blast zone. "Commander! I have spotted an unidentified object at 2'o clock, distance of roughly 900 meters!"

This snapped everyone into action. Wang clutched his fist, and gave the orders. "Gunner, prep penetrator round, but do not fire yet! Driver, close in to 300 meters!"

At almost the exact same moment, the monstrosity that was too large to call a combat vehicle must have spotted them as well. Slowly, but surely, it turned its enormous turret - Liu swear that the turret was larger than this entire tank - facing towards their tank. Its turret, if that's what it was supposed to be, is uncharacteristically flat and rigid for a modern tank, but what was on the side of the turret was what almost scared the living soul out of him. Two long-barreled smoothbore cannons, each with a muzzle brake that was the length of their complete turret, was facing directly at the cockpit. On the massive chassis of the tank, there were two sets of treads on each side; at the traditional front-center position of the chassis was a cockpit that looked more like a ship's bridge than a tank cockpit - the windshield glasses were too large to have survived a nuclear blast, but somehow, it must have survived.

What then appeared was a series of Morse codes that flashed from the cockpit. Liu was in his high school's radio competition club, so he immediately recognized it: "Commander, the vehicle... it's flashing a series of numbers! It seems that he's requesting us to tune our radio frequency to the number he specified." Although he couldn't see it, Liu was sure that Wang grimaced for a moment before tuning the tank commander's radio, which communicated on a different radio frequency than the intra-vehicle comm. Liu was tempted to tune his radio to that frequency as well, but he waited as the commander addressed the unknown tank and its occupants.

Not even a minute later, they were side by side with the gigantic monstrosity that looked no more damaged than they were; it simply had a layer of radioactive ash and debris on its body, but beneath that layer of destruction, the familiar camouflage pattern and the blood-red star was the first relieving signs that graced Liu all day long. Whatever branch of the Army it came from, its occupants were friendly, and as strange as it was to locate any survivors at all in near a nuclear ground zero site, Liu felt glad for the first time on that October 1st.

"We're supposed to be part of the Parade, but we are part of the latter groups. Yes, I know what you're about to say regarding the order of the equipment being paraded. You see, we have no idea why we were supposed to be the penultimate group as well. " Commander of the tank, First Lieutenant Zhang Huiying attempted to ease the tension as she made her ways past the group of three whose face could only be described as complete amazement. One moment ago they were doubtful at the suggestion of coming aboard the tank, and the next minute they are simply amazed by what she has gotten used to for the past two years. They were inside what felt more like a room - a crowded dorm room with a ceiling of only slightly higher than their own tank compartment, maybe, but still much more of a room than a compartment in a tank - that contained a small water boiler with tea supply (Red or green), a cabin of MRE rations enough to last the 3-person crew for about a week, another cabinet that contained six NBC suits, and quite a number of other things. The noise that replaced - or, more or less generated the same amount of noise as a normal tank engine - was the sound of the tank's mini computer core, whirring and purring while Second Lieutenant Qian Guohui (Gunner) performed his secondary job as the technician in charge of maintaining the electronic equipment aboard the tank. The driver of this titan, Second Lieutenant Sun Yi, joined the crew of the Type-99 near the back compartment, where there was even a small "table" for the normal crew to eat and perhaps take a rest on the covered ammunition racks.

As she waited for the tea to boil, she can't help but feel relieved yet guilty at the same time. ZTZ-200, dubbed the Overlord Superheavy Tank, was like a true "land cruiser" that was often visualized back in the days of the World Wars. The development of this tank started back in the 1990's as part of the 863 program, a comprehensive government program that aimed to improve all aspects of Chinese technology and introducing new gadgets and technologies such as quantum computer networks, commonplace genetic engineering... and this 125-ton, dual 125mm-gun armed, composite armor armored absolute monstrosity that dwarfs any tanks previously developed. The program started out aiming to replace the Type 99 - which did not enter service in numbers until the late 2000's and early 2010's - but as miracles and miracles happened, the Central Military Commission gave the order to Norinco to completely overhaul the project from another MBT to a true land cruiser, able to beat 4 M1A2 Abrams tanks in direct combat... at least in theory. This is in parts thanks to the DU composite armor, but also in part thanks to the computer core that is being maintained; the computer maintained many of the standard "vitals" of the tank, relieving the crew from many cumbersome tasks that a normal tank crew would still have to do and allowed the crew to concentrate more on the battle. Even better, the computer recognizes a limited set of vocal commands, though the feature had not been thoroughly tested yet.

"... and so, just as we prepared to start the engines, we started hearing comm chatter regarding explosions and gunfire at Tiananmen Square. The commander ordered us to hurry up and get there despite the fact that we only carried substandard ammunition - oh, why we're carrying live ammunition? Well, ask the commander over there. I have no idea. " And thus, as Zhang brought the green tea back in thermos bottles, she faced three faces containing mixed emotion regarding all the info they just processed. She silently sighed, and as she sat down, she began to explain. "As you can obviously see, this tank is the fruit of an experimental and top secret R&D program. There were only two of us - I mean, two Overlords that were supposed to participate in the Parade - but we were always carrying live ammo, even during training. We directly report to the Commander-in-Chief of the Beijing Military District, and apparently he was the one who argued for us to carry live ammo."

'But that's treason! No one is supposed to carry live ammo during the Parade!" Li was now obviously distressed. "So this must be a coup!"

"No, trust me on that. Do you think two tanks - granted, two of the most advanced tanks world wide, but still only two tanks - can change the politics of China? How do you think we got the chance to drive this thing? As well, I think the main gun was programmed to be offline - until we received the communique to find the little red book hidden in the tea supply rack, enter three sets of authorization codes and then give the vocal command to release chamber lock. Almost sound like a ballistic missile submarine now doesn't it?" She blew the hot steam off her green tea, took a small sip, and then looked around at the three other crew members until she was satisfied that they would no longer attempt to execute her right now, right here. "We were in front of another formation of tanks courtesy of the 863 program, and I think we shielded most of them from the nuclear blast. Regarding your missions... unfortunately, we're standing on the remains of the Forbidden Palace right now. The entire Politburo is probably KIA, same thing to the bastards that somehow sneaked in and killed most of our unarmed comrades. We were able to knock out most of their vehicles before some madman detonated a Hiroshima bomb right in front of the Mausoleum, killing all those not killed or evacuated already. As for the subways... well, as we waited for fuel, ammo and orders we did some repair work and ventured into the subways. There are some survivors, but most of them are either burnt or heavily irradiated. I'm sorry."

"... you said most. Where are the rest?" Wang was the first one to speak up again from the grievance, his voice slightly shaking but also dedicated again. "This tank's definitely not mobile; did you happen to see some escape?"

"Yes. Quite a number of them drove away in pickups and civilian cars, but somehow, there were tanks and armored vehicles as well. Most looked like scrap put together, but they were even faster than our tracked IFV's. My guess is that they're going to try to hijack planes from the international airport and escape from there. Umm, what's that expression on your face, commander Wang?"

Wang hesitated for but one moment before looking up again. "Could you speak to our division commander and inform him of this? I don't know about you, but I really want payback right now."

Chapter One: The Dragon Awakes
Part 3: the Heavenly Inferno

Normally, urban combat would drastically reduce the effectiveness of heavily armored vehicles, as ambushes, mines and tank barricades will reduce an armored column down to a crawl, while infantry squads may quickly move between buildings as well as establish positions that acts both as forward barracks and armory as well as bunkers, thanks to the miracles of modern material science and architecture. On this day and in Beijing, however, the column of tanks that sped down the freeway at cruise speed didn't need to worry about any of the obstacles. True, there were some abandoned vehicles on the ring roads, but the mighty treads simply crushed them all. As well, the highways were probably built with the intention of allowing military deployment in mind; Liu found it easy to speed the tank to 45kph, though he kept the speedometer reading at roughly 30kph for the benefit of the two towering ZTZ-200's behind them in the distance. Like his crewmates, he still doubted the combat effectiveness of these tanks that were a tribute to the tanks of almost a century before his time.

Their vehicle and another Type 99 from the 22nd brigade, as well as two wheeled IFV's, made up the spearhead team that stayed about three kilometers ahead of the assault force. Commander Wang had already confirmed the fact that BCIA was being held hostage right now; the merciless bastards had commandeered civilian trucks as well as buses, rammed Terminal 2's entrance with suicide bomb trucks, and mowed down all those in their way as they advanced across the departure level as another band of them raided the main hangars of Air China and the fuel depots. Fortunately, that would slow them down a fair deal... enough time for the all the tanks to advance to the airport, and destroy these wangbadan that had murdered so many Chinese citizens.

Wang's thought was cut short by the sudden lurch of the tank, which came to a complete standstill. "Driver, what's going on?" He voiced his dissatisfaction thru the crew radio; he was the commander of the tank afterall. Liu's voice thru the radio was colder than what he had gotten used to: "Sir, if you did not notice, Lijun had identified thru thermal imaging that the enemy force have barricaded the toll station 1.3km in front of us as a strong point. If you examined the wreckages near Tiananmen closely, you would see that they have rocket launchers and AT missiles at their disposal. I have no idea how they got them, but it would be suicide if we were to keep driving. Our tank wouldn't fit anyways."

"Alright then. Hold position and radio the other vehicles of our little recon force. I'll radio the Lieutenant regarding this situation." Wang was a little bit annoyed at himself that he got distracted while nearing a battle, but the frustration in his voice nonetheless contained a fair bit of dissatisfaction towards the younger driver of the tank. "Overlord 01, this is Mountain Lion 01. We have encountered a major fortification that will block our access to the airport and potentially let the invaders escape, should we not clear the road in time." As he radioed the gigantic tank, he felt a reasonable suspicion: why hasn't the enemy opened fire yet? Are they waiting for us to get closer, or is it simply because of this timely yet rare sandstorm that indeed reduced visibility to below 100 meters?

"Hmm, how far is it from our tank?"

"Why do you ask that?"

"Answer the question, Staff Sergeant."

"Yes sir. The target is... 4.5 kilometers from your current position." Why did this woman become so arrogant all of a sudden?

"Ah-ha. Mountain Lion 01, this is Overlord 01. Fall back to the main formation, and stick close to the sides of the road."

The next thing he heard was something that he took a second to confirm: she gave the order to prep HE shells... at a distance more than twice the effective range of the 99's main gun.

With a simple press of the button, two 125mm HE shells were fed into the barrels of the mighty Overlord's extra-long gun smoothbore barrels. The computer automatically calculated the optimum gun angle, powered up the hydraulics to slightly raise the barrels, and hit the pin.

Revolving as they went, two shells almost simultaneously burst out of the massive muzzle brakes and made the loudest noise that a tank gun would ever make, even enough to induce a small tremor despite the fact that the tank which just fired them weighed 125 tons. Spinning in the air as they gracefully glided across the air at high mach, the shells never landed at their intended targets... but instead were detonated, air burst fashion. The toll building was constructed of steel and concrete, sure, but the current occupants were still human. It was then predictable as to what happened to them; those nearest to the explosion were either consumed by the hellfire or tore to shreds by the shock wave. Smaller vehicles that were used for the getaway - now used as barriers - were brushed aside like leafs in the wind, while the heavier buses were still flipped over, crushing their occupants who were supposed to fire their rockets as soon as the Chinese army got close.

The garrison barely had a second to react before a second set of shells landed near the other end of the toll station, engulfing the other half in flames. Some vehicles in the back attempted to run, but what welcomed them was not safety, but guided missiles that shot out through the barrel of the now combat-ready Type 99's. Some exploded on the spot; others were propelled into the air by the shockwave, and then landed in a spectacular fireball that would pale the special effects at Hollywood.

Project 863 of the People's Republic of China had just scored another crucial success; though through regrettable circumstances, the ZTZ-200 had just scored its first kills.

Lieutenant Zhang had radioed Sergeant Wang, informing them that her tank and the other "Overlord" will stay here; the 22nd and 23rd brigades were to catch up with the invaders ASAP.
