Republic of Sweden

Leader: Undisclosed prime minister.
Capital: Stockholm (officially), London (exiled government).
Population: 12,000,000 (2045 census).
Manpower: 65,000.
Manpower in the ECA: 4,000 (expeditionary divisions, no direct involvement with multinational military).

Sweden, the northern kingdom, long known for its beautiful countryside, bustling economic centers, young foreign-exchange students seeking adventure and a stout patriotic population, had a very drastic change during the 21st century. Having existed for almost two millennia, Sweden is one of the oldest countries on Earth and has had a long history filled with pride, tragedy, shame and anything in between, but it had always been known as the Kingdom of Sweden. That title would be dropped during the twilight years of the European Union…

During the violent years of the 2000s, anti-immigration, racism and nationalism was on the rise all throughout Europe. The presence of the Global Liberation Army in the Middle East and a surge of African and Arabic immigrants to Europe wasn’t helping the case. In Sweden, the social world was effectively split between the nationalists who wanted to stop immigration from going out of control, and socialists that wanted to help anyone that made it to their nation. The nationalists consolidated their power and created the Royal Party, a political party devoted to reverting Sweden back to its old days and granting more power to the monarch while still maintaining a democracy. The party became very popular especially among the youth, and even exceeded the 4% threshold in the 2022 elections and made it into the Parliament. They promised that if they were elected in four years, “radical changes” and “ever-lasting unity” would happen to Sweden.

The Royal Party, or ‘Royals’, were hell-bent on winning the 2026 elections. They kick-started a serious propaganda campaign all throughout Sweden, infecting people’s lives with their obnoxious ranting. It did help gain them a few more followers, but it wasn’t enough. In 2018 the physical bill voting system in Sweden had been replaced with a digital one, in order to make it easier and more accurate to count the votes. The Royal Party exploited this, and used the infamous hacker group ‘DR34D’ to rig the polls in the 2026 elections. That day the television sets in Sweden showed the nationalist royals giving their speech about the future of Sweden, and how they would protect them against the rising foreign threat. Expectedly, things didn’t go as smooth as they’d hoped.
Immediately, the Royal Party’s dated and ineffective policies reduced Sweden almost into a third-world nation, as swift evacuation of immigrants and non-Swedish citizens resulted in chaos. People took to the streets, riots ensued, the economy was quickly falling (especially after the disastrous US retreat in 2027 made the dollar worthless and many peoples’ bank accounts were destroyed), and the party became instantly unpopular. The citizens openly fought against the Royal Party, eventually forcing the Social Democrats and Moderate Party to create the Socialist-Moderate Alliance and take them down.

When the Global Liberation Army made its way into Central Europe the next year, a cell of theirs spawned in Stockholm. The royal family, which had forcibly been given more power by the Royal Party, was killed in a devastating terrorist attack on the Stockholm castle. Blaming this disaster on the acting Prime Minister, he was quickly ambushed and killed by violent rioters during a visit in Uppsala. The Socialist-Moderate Alliance quickly seized the opportunity and destroyed the Royal Party.

After the death of the royal family, the Royal Guard was turned into the Parliamentary Guard.

The 2030 elections saw the Socialist-Moderate Alliance come back into power, and they took steps to ensure their country’s survival. Unfortunately, with the royal family was dead and no-one closely related wanting to take power, SMA announced Sweden’s transition into a constitutional republic. Each county was granted a significant degree of autonomy in order to stabilize the viciously different views among the populace, and local parties were allowed some power in order to please the citizens. Four years later the country was coming back together, and even relations between nationalists and immigrants stabilized after they were separated into different foundations as to not upset the situation in schools, workplaces and more. The creation of the European Continental Alliance saw Sweden gets back on its feet both economically and socially. The Socialist-Moderate Alliance was reelected in 2034, but now with a very different political system.

But the ECA wasn’t as well received in Sweden as it was in other nations. The failure of the European Union was what left their economy in shambles, and the population wasn’t ready to accept another pan-European partnership yet. So instead they created a close union with the neighboring Scandinavian countries Norway, Denmark and Finland; the so-called ‘Nordic Trade Bloc’ was born. Later becoming a major part of the ECA’s expeditionary divisions, the bloc strengthened the Nordic Battlegroup as conscription was reintroduced in Sweden. The new republic didn’t want to get too closely attached with the ECA, allowing Norway to become a major member, and so didn’t partition more than a few thousand soldiers to the Continental Army and consolidated their resources for the bloc. The overarching goal of the Nordic Trade Bloc was to consolidate power in preparations for a ‘Nordic Federation’. Seeing as the Northern European states were more attached to each other than the rest of Europe, a close-minded federation would be an ideal choice while still granting the member nations a significant degree of autonomy. Plans had been drawn out like this ever since the end of World War II, but it had never really seen the light of day. SMA had been in touch with their allies in Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Reykjavik, and the federation would have become a reality if it wasn’t for the outbreak of the Russo-European War in 2045.

Nordic Battlegroup became a task force in the ECA.

A friendly rivalry between Sweden and Germany soon appeared, with the two nations competing over trade power in the Baltic, but they also cooperated a lot – most famously the Jagdmammut tank destroyer which was born out of old German and Swedish tank designs, notably the ‘Kannonenjagdpanzer’ and ‘S-tank’. The Esrange satellite launch facility, decommissioned in 2025, was reopened and became the Solaris satellites third major launch site, right after the French Guyana space center and Reykjavik space center. Three Swedish astronauts even made it onto the NAUSS Pennsylvania after European scientists were allowed aboard.

The European technology made its way into Sweden, but Swedish technology also made its way into the ECA. For example, one of the famous solar reactors was built near Trondheim, Norway, providing power for the entire Scandinavian Peninsula and even Finland, and advances in medical technology at Uppsala University paved the way for the famous exo-skeletons used by the ECA military today. During Operation Nemesis, the ECA invasion of North Africa, the new federal government was feeling doubtful. It had hoped Europe would centralize itself and keep international business out of it, but later reluctantly supported by detaching several fighter-bomber divisions to assist the German battlegroup in Libya. Next-generation stealth corvettes and cruisers were also leant to the French and Italian navies, and later sold to them entirely. For the most part, Sweden was getting back into shape, like the old days.

Cue the Russian Federation. Ever since President Suvorov came into power, he had been interested in brokering a deal with the Nordic Trade Bloc but all members refused, stating the bloc to be Nordic only (as the name would indicate). For years the relations worsened with Russia, such as claims of new Solaris satellites spreading wildfires and illegal espionage activities in Moscow. The Swedish and Finnish navies were regularly reporting sightings of Russian submarines and cruisers patrolling dangerously close to their territorial waters, and more than a few unidentified military aircraft violated airspace – on both sides. Sweden was worried, with good reason: If war broke out the Russian Navy would have a clear path right into Stockholm across the Baltic from St. Petersburg. Several new naval technologies were jumpstarted ahead of schedule, such as railgun technology and advanced stealth systems for cruisers and submarines. They weren’t completed in time as the Russo-European War broke out in 2045.

Just a few hours into the war, Russian aircraft were making surgical strikes on airfields across Europe, Scandinavia included. Air fields were taken out, airports were damaged and some highways were destroyed, since they could be used as makeshift landing strips. Several days in, paratroopers landed in Stockholm and took control of downtown and major urban centers. The home guard was scrambled and several weeks of tough urban fighting commenced. Russian tanks were deployed on the eastern seaboard all from Haparanda to Malmö, and soon Swedish Leopard tanks were engaging Russian Kodiaks on open fields. Half a year into the war, northern Finland was lost. The Russians were headed straight for the important iron ore mines near Kiruna, a vital resource. In order to halt their advance, major roads and bridges were destroyed by the home guard as they pushed ever onwards. But that wasn’t able to stop the Russians, who even managed to discover a secret airbase in the Scandinavian mountains were the top-secret ‘Odin’ aerial solaris weapon was housed. But Kiruna was the price, but the local citizens wouldn’t let them have it. They helped the home guard load tons of TNT into the mine, and detonated it just before the Russians took the city. The largest iron ore mine in Europe was destroyed, burying all the vital resources.

The Russian General in charge of the operations in Northern Europe was General Orlov, a soldier who had proven himself in Africa years ago. He strictly ordered the Russian soldiers to behave in front of the Swedish citizens, or else. The Russian occupation received a mixed welcome in Sweden; some thought they weren’t that much of a problem since they allowed the citizens privacy and basic supplies such as food and hot water. But of course some soldiers didn’t like playing nice. At one point, a gang of rough soldiers along with hardline Swedes decided to invade a local university and ‘enjoy’ what the students had to offer. Orlov was infuriated, court martialing the soldiers and sending the Swedes to detainment facilities, while anti-Russian sentiment grew among the occupied citizens.

The war saw many famous landmarks destroyed. The Oresund Bridge was blown up in an attempt to stall the Shock Divisions’ advance from the south, the Globe Area was ruined in misplaced artillery fire and even the Stockholm Palace suffered some serious injuries from both the Russians and the home guard. In 2047, Sweden became completely occupied, and soon thereafter the Valhalla power plant near Trondheim was destroyed, leaving Scandinavia powerless. This reduced the Russians control of the region, forcing their armies to retain control of the major population centers and fight a war of attrition in the countryside against the resistance and remnants.

Soon however, assistance arrived in the form of the United States of America. The USS Spirit of Freedom floating fortress launched air strikes into Scandinavia, and cut off many Russian supply routes. Soon, European reinforcements made landfall in Norway and pushed the Russians back by surrounding cities and engaging from all directions. In 2049, almost all of Scandinavia was liberated, and it was soon time to launch the final offensive against the Federation.
