Hey guys. I finally bought a half-way decent graphics card to replace the onboard piece of shit that came with my motherboard. When I went to install it, it worked perfectly for about 20 minutes, then it crashed my comp. Anyone had this problem or have any suggestions?

btw the card is a GeForce 9400 GT

Can you be more specific? What kind of crash? How do you know it's the graphics card? Is it still functioning now?

This is although not the perfect forum to ask for help, a tech-support forum from a hardware related website would heighten the chance of solving your quirk.

The entire computer turns itself off, reboots, turns off again, then won't load windows. This only happens when the graphics card is in. When I pull it out the computer runs fine. As of right now the comp runs fine, minus good graphics. crush8.gif I've been trying different things for weeks...

So it has only worked once for 20 minutes, and then you were never able to run windows again?

Secondly, is windows really refusing to run, or do you perceive that your computer is still activating itself while you see nothing on the screen beyond the BIOS diagnostic?

A computer suddenly turning itself off with a hardware related source, then you can most of the time bet it's an overheating problem. And if windows is running but you are just not getting a visual, then I may have to inform you that your video chip or rather it's cooling may be dead. This way the 9400GT is continuously overheating itself when you turn on your computer, which would explain why the machine is stuck in a rebooting loop.

Send the graphics card back for inspection, if you hadn't done that yet. What you can do yourself to see is start up your PC, graphics card inside and the case open. Look if the fan on the graphics card is running if you have an active cooling solution. If it does not have a fan, it is a passive cooling and you can not see anything, but passive coolings are inanimate and do not fail the way that fans can. Use any inspiration you can find to measure if the card is too hot or not.

How hot did the PC get prior to crash?
My laptop turns off if it gets too hot

I believe that the card is overheating, as far as I can tell. I plan on sending it in for inspection/replacement this week.

Shock, you're probably right about windows running but me not being able to see it.

If you're not seeing anything at all prior to the overheat I fear your chip may already be burned down, have you looked if the fan is running if you have one on the card?

When the new external video card is not set as primary graphics device, that does not explain why it did work initially for 20 minutes as well as the rebooting loops.
