SWR Productions Forum _ Rise of the Reds _ ROTR Mission!!

Posted by: CobraHumvee 29 Oct 2009, 4:51

The purpose of this topic is to post bugs and ask questions and make suggestions for my missions. I try to make interesting missions that are of good quality, and that takes a lot of time.

Here are my missions in order for the moment: Only compatible with 1.84 unless otherwise stated.
USA Missions:
Operation Wake up Call (ROTR 1.86)

Original EA Missions Good for ROTR 1.86
Note these are set to difficulty level Hard as you cant really choose the default level in game. Also some sounds will not play due to them being from the original generals,
current workaround is to follow this guide. http://www.cnclabs.com/forums/default.aspx?g=posts&t=7211
Links are dead, and these are out of date except for the training mission.

USA Training (ROTR 1.86)

Update: I am slowly updating these to 1.86, literally just logged back into the forum after 5 years, so give me some time to reaquaint myself.

Very nice actually, I can see that you have limited resources, but the time you spent on it must've been a while.

It was rather interesting beating back the near-constant onslaught of Russians, though I kinda plowed to their main base with 5 well-micro'd hover crusaders, 3 avengers, and a couple semi-expendable sentries. Would prolly have been harder if I actually bothered with the secondary objective. biggrin.gif

I'll try to get in a second play through some time, but for now, it's time for some Calculus homework. sad.gif

Posted by: Papaya Master Rai 29 Oct 2009, 7:20

Problems:
1. After the Berkuts attack on a certain unit or structure before they circle around on top of my base or near it waiting to be killed by an Avenger, Missile Defender or Protector instead of going back to base.
2. Russian vehicles tend to follow my snipers, even though they are invisible.

Overall it is an interesting, fun, and challenging mission right there CobraHumvee. It is an excellently detailed map you must have worked really hard on it. And also nice choice of putting defenses on top of the "you know what". I did not expect to be attacked near "it". Good Job. smile.gif

If I didn't use any Microwave tanks and Avengers I might have been defeated by the continuing onslaught of russian units. So yeah it is quite hard at first. Even if my first attempt to finish that mission was a failure, because of the reason below. sad.gif

I learned a valuable lessons for today in that mission and that is:
"Capture that bunker, instead of guarding it with a few vehicles equipped with 1 battle drone each."
When I was about to destroy the Russian Command Center the drones destroyed it accidentally...leading to a mission failed scenario.

Seems they tell it looks good, better give it a try.

Please upload this on Moddb, since i have no darn idea why nothing happens when i click on any of the IP adresses.

Damn am at work again..will try this out if i have time today..if not next week sad.gif. Going out of town from tomorrow for sometime

I commented on the mission already on Moddb, and it is quite good.

Posted by: Жao 29 Oct 2009, 17:11

I guess ill try this mission and see if its hard tongue.gif

Posted by: Balizk 29 Oct 2009, 19:16

Very well made map, I liked the limited resources and small army kind.

But I defeated the Russians prety easy, there was other things to do (half of the map i didn't explored lol).

Posted by: Comr4de 29 Oct 2009, 21:38

I'll give this one a try in just a few moments but I really suggest you post some screenshots to entice more viewers into looking at your work =)

Posted by: NergiZed 29 Oct 2009, 23:07

Ja, screenies would be nice, both in-game and an overview in the world editor. Remember to press 'F9' while doing in-game screenies to hide the menus.

Thanks for the comments. Ill be sure to put up some screenshots probably tommorow.

Posted by: joshh 1 Nov 2009, 2:52

ummmm... so i started playing, explored a bit, then found the russian base in the corner. destroyed the cc and won. without capturing the bunker. is this supposed to happen? or was the next objective after "capture the bunker" "destroy the cc"?

Posted by: CobraHumvee 1 Nov 2009, 4:30

You dont have to capture the bunker to win but it is something to do, to make the game a little more interesting. I didnt realize everyone would just attack their main base so in future missions ill fix that where you have to do the objectives.

Posted by: Pickysaurus 1 Nov 2009, 5:12

Taking down the base is a player's natural instinct unless instructed otherwise.

Picky is mostly correct, you know. v1.1 soon? I8.gif

Posted by: KamuiK 1 Nov 2009, 14:25

As they said, though I prefered capturing everything. I was a little annoyed by the fact I had so little tech for the mission (not even airforce) so I needed to capture something better - finding out the Russian tech tree is full up to Tremor. Interestingly, when you have 2 Weapon Bunkers, you can use the missile independant from them as they do not share the counter.
So yeah, maybe change the mission the following way:
The first objective is to capture the Chemical Bunker - around it in the city is a smaller base, but bigger than it is in the actual version, attacking you more often than not (however they can be defeated of course). Once you capture the Bunker, the map changes and gives access to the Russian base, which starts around 5 minutes after the capture its attacks.
Btw, what was with the GLA warning at the south?

Posted by: CobraHumvee 1 Nov 2009, 19:33

I was wondering how long it would take before someone noticed. lol I just put it there because we are all looking forward to fighting the GLA. smile.gif

Ok, because the pathfinding kinda fails, Russia massed like 50-60 units in one square, so when I sent my 6 strong force to attack/unlodge them. I was like WTF?!?
Also is there a script that results in defeat if the player's firebase is destroyed? Because just after the russians started hitting my defensive line I got a "You have been defeated" message. :S

Posted by: CobraHumvee 2 Nov 2009, 4:58

Thanks to everyone who commented and informed me of some bugs, so I am proud to release the final version of Operation Wake up Call.
I have fixed the game not ending without capturing the bunkers, added river animation, removed the "missing" from the captions, and tweaked a couple other things.
Download here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O6EBXI43
The screenshots that i posted before are up to date, so you can look at those.

P.S. To answer your question PickySaurus the AI will sometimes mass up their units, i dont know anyway to fix that. And secondly I do have a script where if you have no units in your base area while the timer is active you lose. (Thats why the caption says to defend the area)

Posted by: Raven 3 Nov 2009, 21:38

I just finished the mission. Very good job Cobra!!!!! Its a very well done mission and i really like the UN thing you had smile.gif.
As for bugs, i found that if you capture the base to the southwest, the mission will not end. I finally sold all the building i captures from that base and it immediately ended the mission as a success smile.gif.

I had the same problem first. Yet a decent mission indeed.

Actually i thought there would be an attack from the south at one point and left some units there smile.gif

Posted by: Papaya Master Rai 4 Nov 2009, 15:49

I think its because he clearly said in the map: Do not capture the Russian buildings, destroy them. And yeah that warning from the south made me worried, so I put a few scout units in that area for safety reasons and also its quite ironic about what he said about the UN there.

Posted by: Sesa 4 Nov 2009, 23:37

Very Good Idea!!!! ohmy.gif

Posted by: Genmotty 9 Nov 2009, 4:18

I rather enjoyed the concept of the mission, even if it wasn't the best example of a mission map. Being a mapper myself I felt that the lack of detail, or advanced scripting made the experience not as enjoyable as it could have been.

In concept the idea of 'holding the line' given limited resources is a tried and tested way to gain somebodies involvement in a mission and to spark some adrenaline at having to conserve what little forces they have. This mission could have done with a lot longer for the defense time, and probably a better form of place to defend. With two fire bases your options are somewhat limited, and the attacks were hardly likely to have overrun the player.

To be an awesome mission the player needs to find himself just about being overrun as the builder troops and re-enforcements roll in. This then makes them feel as if they have accomplished something a lot harder than it actually may have been because they have seen most of the stuff they started with destroyed.

Moving on from this the player is left with a period where nothing much happens. With the map being so open and accessible, the player can very quickly scout it out with little danger too his/her scouts and he/she feels like there wasn't much challenge in doing so. Key choke points that need a little bit of thought to deal with reward the player with the ability to then explore more of the map. This could have been implemented to the north better with a small Russian infantry base which made a few troops and had a couple of defenses. In such a way the player would need to take that out before going on to capture the oil derricks and supply area, as well as exploring the UN base.

Doing this would have also focused the player away from the Russian main base to the south, which had a similar affair set up, and automatically becomes the 'closest enemy' to attack.

When a player builds a base, the first thing they want to do is to eliminate nearby threats. Therefore by placing the enemy main base far away from the player, not only do they have to explore and deal with the rest of the map first, it also allows the enemy to put 'troops in the field' in one or two waves that the player has to deal with on the way to the main base.

In this mission, after taking out a couple of Tunguska's my small humvee and infantry force made from the starting given units was able to pick apart the little base to the south before the counter attack.

This was well implemented. Many fan made mission maps do not involved guard scripts for an AI base. Units in a game like generals provide a 'mobile threat' that you cannot just counter by moving out of range. They also provide a way to bolster the effectiveness of defensive structures, because you don't need to have so many defensive structures to still get the same 'attrition effect'. This I personally liked and didn't expect.

However! These same guards also followed my small scout force directly to my base and was wiped out by my base defenses. Thus 'guards' need to know when to retreat. This is actually somewhat difficult sometime to program into the AI scripts because when and where should these units retreat. If they go back to the base center, then often another quick strike can take out the base defense structures before they can respond. But if you leave them in the field, they become targets themselves.

This is where the sencodary bunker objective could have been capitalised on by using that as a rally point for one group of guards, while the main base had another.

When the main base was attacked, the guards from the bunker base could have moved down to encircle the attacking troops, while the main base built new guards to sent to the bunker base.

Many players would, having seen these troops cut of there own, try and retreat there first attack force to prevent them being completely destroyed. It would also make them fear for the safety of their own base, if after an attack when their base is empty of its own guards comes under attack.

Because players never like risking their main base, this is a great way to make a player be cautious and it also makes the mission longer and more enjoyable.

Finally I'd like to comment that the Russian base itself didn't look much like a base, I mean there were few 'roads' and the uneven terrain made it look as if the base had been put there as an after thought.

I'd like to thankyou for the map as it was an enjoyable 20mins however I'd hope that you'll take these points to heart for your next mapping endeavor. Hell I might even make my own ROTR mission to highlight some of these points.

Here is the briefing for the mission. After defeating the Russians and preventing a chemical war, some of our operatives located a chinese mining facility. We lost contact a short time later and sent in the airforce to destroy the facility. We soon learned the chinese were ready with their AA flak cannons. Your team is being inserted by boat and your objective is to destroy the flak cannons to clear the way for air support. Be advised we have been picking chatter on the radios that is not chinese, may be linked to another faction.
P.S. Don't ask when it will be done.

Just finished up the intro to the mission, took about 2 hours of fighting with world builder to get the whole scene done right. I know this pic doesnt show much but it is still a nice pic. wink.gif One quick question how do i add the bar under some of your guys post, stating which army i am with.

Posted by: Pickysaurus 19 Nov 2009, 14:17

Those bars are signs of taking part in the ROTR Roleplay that is run periodically - unfortunately the current one has kinda fizzled out.

Posted by: KamuiK 19 Nov 2009, 16:19

Just as all 4 before. I cannot help with that much, since I cannot force everyone to post just for the sake of it. If no one is interested, yeah...
@Scene: looks nice indeed.

One note about the mission, dont try and rush through it or you will lose. Use some strategy with the units provided.

Hard Mission is hard D:
I'd taken out two twin fangs and all I had left was an ambulance, 6 rangers and a pilot

Posted by: KamuiK 25 Nov 2009, 22:00

Ok, some words about this mission:
a ) some of the briefing are missleading, like at the beginning when your mission is to take on the airfield: it should be stated that the player has to destroy all enemy units and structures there (excluding the civilian ones), and that flag should be a target as well.
b ) the opening is nice, but the bunch of units you get is everything but useful. If not heavy units, at least a Colonel Burton should come up, because this is so far as I have seen a commando mission.
c ) I will update if something else comes up.

Edit: I redeem my argument about Colonel Burton, the mission is pretty much possible without him, only needs a bit mor micromanagement than usual and being careful. I won with Sattelite, Emergency Repair 1 and Ammo Dump as abilities, the rest is clear.

Posted by: Pickysaurus 26 Nov 2009, 2:06

I chose leaflet drop instead of ammo dump but yeah...

I think it's very good for a novice. And well worked as you don't actually have any custom voice clips to work with.

Another think I found slightly odd was that the whole idea of the mission is to kill the AA for air support, however one of the Generals powers available uses an aircraft....

Posted by: katmoda12 26 Nov 2009, 16:50

I've finished the mission, you've done a great work. it is a long and funny mission.
Great!
Can't wait to see other works...
thank you

Posted by: Pickysaurus 26 Nov 2009, 17:33

Going back to KamuiK's point - Burton might be a good idea - or just the hero in general for commando style missions.

And if you want the flags destroyed - make them target-able.

If you're interested CobraHumvee, here is an interesting WB test map I made to highlight a scripting concept. Basically, an Avenger targets the Kodiak, giving it status _Faerie Fire_, and that triggers the following script. Sorry, I don't have a way to upload the video I took, but here's what I did.

Script 1 =

If> Object _Kodiak-1_ has status _Faerie Fire_
Then> enable _script 2_

Script 2 =

If> True
Then> spawn object _USA08CruiseMissileAttack_ at waypoint _waypoint1_
And> Set timer _Cruisemissile_ to 1.5 sec

(or whatever time works best. this time worked previously on the MOAB, but a different time might work better with the FOAB)

If> Timer -Cruisemissile_ expires
Then> spawn object _FOAB_ at Waypoint _waypoint1_ on team _TeamUSA_

(Any explosive can replace the FOAB, but it creates the best boom)

It would be interesting to see this in a mission, as a final cinematic, if you choose to make another killer mission.

Posted by: KamuiK 29 Nov 2009, 23:03

Tahaha, I can imagine the Russians getting 3 FOAB's on the enemy base in the end of a mission.

Posted by: CobraHumvee 30 Nov 2009, 0:44

Thx joshh for the cinematic idea i might use it in a future map (probably not the next one cause its already planned).

And in regards to Burton, i was going to add him originally but then i realized that a player could have attacked the Chinese main which you weren't supposed to do, and the fact that Burton would have made it too easy of a mission.

Posted by: joshh 30 Nov 2009, 1:27

the idea was to have a player guide a lone avenger thru heavy russian/chinese defenses to laze a specific target (weapons bunker, breeder reactor, something that looks really important), and then the cruise missile comes in during the cutscene. but KamuiK, your idea works as well. I'm always a fan of big booms! Anyone who reads this, feel free to try it!

This will make it more easy to find them.
Anyway keep up the good work.

Just found time to play this and get away from MW2 since my gaming PC broken sad.gif. Awesome mission. Failed in the first 2 attempts but got through with better microing. I've never used the pathfinder's binocular ability before and it really proved its worth in this mission smile.gif.

------
btw i had this strange thing. My PC was up for windows restart after an update and i always clicked restart later so i can finish this mission. I was saving my progress and i was on the save menu when this restart message came and minimized ROTR. Then after i went back to the game, i could not save anymore. All i could do was to load the game when i pressed Save/Load button. However this happened close to the point where you get to save the downed crew message. Was it done in the mission or the restart message just screwed the ZH save game option.

Anyway it does not matter. I finished the mission. Good job Cobra......smile.gif

GLA in this mission are indeed a pain in the arse. But a nice touch.
Giving them Scorpions makes them slightly OP vs the units given though.
I had to pre-scout them, leaflet drop and ambush as not to lose any units to them.

I lost my ambulance to GLA smile.gif. Then i happily took down some walls to promote by Rangers so they can auto heal smile.gif. However a troop crawler ran over my sniper in the latter stages of the mission sad.gif

Posted by: KamuiK 11 Dec 2009, 13:02

Just keep your MDs next to your ambulance, same for the sniper, and you are out of problems. Micromanagement is as always the key to keep them alive.

Posted by: Raven 12 Dec 2009, 6:14

It was a mistake on my part and i was too lazy to restart the mission. So i took down the walls and got the rangers to auto heals by promoting smile.gif. Hopefully that'll be fixed in the next mission.

Briefing
General, one of our supply convoys has been ambushed in a small german town by Russian forces, these supplies are critical for the ECA war effort. Your mission is to break through the
Russian defenders guarding the town and to destroy their base before the ECA runs out of supplies.

The Download Link
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LCHKRN7Y

Known Problems/Bugs:Occasionally the AI will get stuck in the town and cause a huge traffic jam(rare)
Planes will not attack sometimes, its like a 50/50 chance of attacking (not sure why)
Some of the camera angles dont work well with the terrain but nothing major

Posted by: Destiny 3 Jan 2010, 5:18

The 30 minute time limit is ridiculous, especially when the city is massive and the base is so spread out. Had to restart plenty, plenty, plenty of times. Otherwise it's okay.

I still don't get why they are in Western Germany though.

Pally spam works wonders.

Should find time to play this mission smile.gif

Posted by: CobraHumvee 11 Jan 2010, 4:25

Here is the deal with the missions, I have two more planned for a total of 5 US missions. The next mission will be called Operation Forest Reconissance and after that Operation Black Gold. I havent decided whether i will make missions for the other factions, but there is a chance I might.

Posted by: Raven 11 Jan 2010, 5:47

Some Russian missions would be cool smile.gif

hi to all im new here can someone teach how to have a campaign mission in rotr1.5..tnx to all pls guide me

Posted by: CobraHumvee 29 Jan 2010, 15:36

If you want to have a mission you must first plan it out. For example you must decide what setting such as desert, forest, snow or jungle. Then what i do is i draw out what i want the mission to look like on paper. This way i dont just have to try and make a map with no guide. To actually make the map you do the terrain first followed by ground texture. Remember texture for mountains and such is different. After that you add objects followed by team objects. If you need to script i suggest you look at the EA missions or my last mission as they have the same kind of scripting. Lastly doing the terrain and texturing is very time consuming so don't get discouraged because it is taking longer then you anticipated.Good Luck!

P.S. Regarding my mission i took a break this past week from working on it, so next week i should be moving ahead with it at full speed.

Posted by: Zhao 30 Jan 2010, 1:03

You should make the missions far more hard then they are currently smile.gif its simply a breeze for me.

Posted by: CobraHumvee 19 Mar 2010, 3:26

IN case you are wondering i am still working on the mission, currently working on the intro and end cinematics. No promises about when it will be ready but sometime this month.

Posted by: Warhawk 28 Mar 2010, 21:23

I just played it and very liked it but there are some problems. In introducing movie you dont see the ground sometimes but maybe it is sage bug.
The next one when you put two saved pilots in the same vehicle you lose the game so maybe you could make them to heroic rank, then this would not happen.
I saved the game and cannot load it so i started from beggining saved it and tried to load it again and it didnt work also but maybe the error is from my side...
The game also lagged too much but ZH pathfinding is buggy so it is ok. Overall i liked the mission so keep up the good work. smile.gif

Posted by: markp 3 Apr 2010, 16:38

Don't know the other person's specifics but I had a related problem ... could save but could not (re)load the saved file.

Then I realized that I was playing the mission under my Shockwave install. wacko.gif

Once I switched to the ROTR install the saves/loads started working as expected.

Zhao always complains about the AI being too easy. Would be fun at the beginning of the map, you have a Paladin (or something else) and two zones with the explanation: are you Zhao? Drive to the left. Are you a mortal? Drive to the right.

Last USA Mission Operation Black Gold
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=06IWXD9Z

The GLA have siezed control of an oil refinery and are terrorizing the city. You must lauch an assault and clear the
city and capture the chemical bunkers they are using to develop new toxins. Both the Chinese and the Russians have tried
to clear the GLA out, the Russians were wiped out and the Chinese lost their main base.Good Luck

For those of you who have thought my missions are too easy, you are in for a big surprise this time around. cough*Zhao*cough
I have mastered the AI complete with generals powers and superweapons, so dont think this will be an easy fight.

I have been thinking for a while about the future of these missions and i have decided to continue, with the GLA being next up, as i have some great ideas for them. mindfuck.gif
Because an update is more then likely imminent i will not releases the GLA missions until after the update. *hint*hint*

On the other hand, CobraHumvee, you should really put down your ideas on the map first, then when the GLA are out in releases you can just edit/add the new stuff 8Ip.png

Posted by: Aaron 9 Apr 2010, 9:32

Cobra i haven't gotten through the entire level yet but i think the beginning could have a bit more cimatic involved it was rather stale when GLA finally got to the Chinese base and rolled them over and a very slow fashion.

Perhaps move the camera a bit during the attack , or rather they just simply bomb them all over and then the troops role in , or a gla ambush tongue.gif.
Also set a FPS cap on your map to around 30 - 40 FPS , it sorta bugs up your scenes when someone with a over the top computers game goes to fast.

Posted by: Pickysaurus 9 Apr 2010, 11:18

I think the use of bomb trucks in the opening cinematics would be better... as said before it's very slow and kinda boring.

Also, I found the mission rather difficult... it would be helpful if the Chinese were allies with you against the GLA, rather than just attacking anything.

Posted by: CobraHumvee 9 Apr 2010, 14:12

For some reason when i try to use bomb trucks it bugs the game and all of the units on a map will stop moving indefinitely, so thats why no bomb trucks.
the mission is a little harder then the others but if just defend your base, build up an army, and then attack you shouldn't have much problem.

I am pretty sure i can do an fps limit in worldbuilder in the future.

Well my time spent on that map hasn't been that much recently, as I have been involved in some other mapping projects for other games. I recall that I stopped work after I got stuck with a glich on the intro clip that I couldn't get rid of. However If I think of a different clip sequence and check do some testing I could probally get the map finshed within a week or two if you want?

You'll need to forgive my 'push to the end of the queue' style of hobbywork, as it generally favours projects that are more imminant, than whenever they were began. I appologise.

I have to reinstall this game so its going to be 2 weeks before i get up and running and make some new download links for the missions i have.
This unfortuante turn of events changes nothing, i will remake the GLA ones I lost.

Hi, thanks for the scenarios.

Just FTR, if you are going to make any more after the GLA - you should make China missions. Because the ROTR team plans on making single player campaigns for Russia and the ECA, but no missions for USA/China/GLA. If you made 5 missions for each of the other 3 factions, it would round things out.

A small US force guarding a Soviet era missle outside of Caior,Egypt has been ambushed.
You must secure a foot hold in the area and eliminate the 4 missiles in the area to prevent Russian control of them.
You have limited tech so this will take skill instead of brute force.
Good Luck General

I just play the mission. Not bad and fun to have missions in RotR.

I have only played it once through but..
Just a few notes:
1) As you can capture the Russian side and get almost all of their tec, it is almost pointless to play US side all the way through.
2) AI needs to be harder.
3) I love the way you made the map. You didnt just put one side on the bottom of the map and the enemy on the top. I love how you made a like town at the bottom. It made it feal more like i was fight in a far off land! ^.^

RotR team notes...
Just wanted to say to the Team. I love the way the Russians work together as a faction. I almost play this mission Russia only. I went around the map with:
T-80k x2, Mishka x2, TOS-1 x1, Tunguska x2 and MTP-A4 x1. They as a (lack of a better word) "unit" worked so well I just have to give praise to the makers.

Also just a passing thought.
I was think as i was playing that the if and i mean IF you guys make a US campain way way down the track. I can see how it might play out... US has easy first few mission as the Russians do not put up much of a fight agaisnt Air scout unit and other air units but when the heavy units come in i could see the Campain going a lot slower tongue.gif

Any way just my passing thoughts on this campain and thoughts looking in to my crytal ball.

1)Completely forgot to limit the enemy tech if u capture it, so thats unitentional.
2)I actually toned down the AI thinking they were too hard oh well.

I downloaded and tried them last night. That was cool. In a mission where you command small US group to destroy Chinese HAA, I just wiped out every single enemy. It was funny how in the end scene Raptors were flying aimlessly since there was nothing to destroy. LOL! screwyou.gif

An urgent question- Are the missions given in this thread compatible with ROTR 1.802 and the soon coming 1.85. Any answers will be appreciated.

A mission that I made smile.gif :-

They are in fact, compatible with 1.802.

Seems Forest Reconnaissance doesn't work... When the pilot is running it gets stuck. It doesn't go on. He just runs around some rocks to the left of the screen.

Also, hint of my first map that I'm working on: Arazoid

Sorry for necroposting, but is there are any possibility that this missions will be updated?

This is the mother of all necromancing, but yes there is a chance actually. Thanks to the fact that I am effectively stuck at home, I have nothing better to do with my time.
