SWR Productions Forum _ ShockWave _ Who is interested in a new Shockwave Skirmish AI?

Posted by: Mizo 31 Jan 2017, 11:09

1.87's AI is done, am free and still motivated to work. I am tempted to renew the Shockwave AI for my own entertainment.

Nothing fancy, just better optimization and bug fixing.
Who's interested?

I am.

It's not fun to launch the game and win in 10 seconds tongue.gif
But what would be more interesting would be a better Challenge AI, if you can have a look at it. There are some that are way too easy (Airforce, Tanks), and some that are too hard (Demo)

I'm interested too. I want to see how ShW's AI become better with improvements from ROTR (as long as it is not too difficult for casual players but can put up a good fight, at least).

BTW, I'm planning to release my own fan patch for ShW 1.2 which fixes several problems I've found and includes some improvements (mostly visual but with some gameplay affecting) carried from my now-obsolete fan patch. I'll release it soon after making sure everything is dealt with, and I may include the improved AI here.

Keep in mind this isn't anything official. Am just creating an Add-on for my own enjoyment primarly since am not a PvP player, and PvE bores me.

Nik, add me on skype, we can work on the add-on in collab.

Posted by: nikitazero678 31 Jan 2017, 12:47

I don't have a Skype ID, maybe we should talk through other means like PM or FB/Twitter...

Me too, I'm not a PvP player either...

It would be great if you can base it on the ROTR AI, because I am fairly sure that trying to fix the mess of the current AI would actually be more work.

Skype's shit. We used it in the medieval times biggrin.gif Its time we move aside from the stone age.

I've just installed Discord and joined the SWR community there, so I can know more on what's happening.

Good idea. If what Mizo states are to be believed, the 1.87 AI will be easier for casual players than 1.86. That should work for ShW too.

+1 smile.gif

And yes, Challenge AI could really benefit from a couple of quick tweaks as well, if that's possible and you fancy it - never modded AI so I'm not sure how it works. Tank especially (totally broken, stalls almost completely after about 10-15 minutes). Laser and Demo to a lesser degree (just need toning down a bit more on the lower difficulty levels).

Hello hard working modders! i am a big fan of the Command and Conquer franchise and i love self made mods from all kinds of creators. Until this day i still actively play this specific mod "Shockwave" with my little brother and other friends mine. we are secretly interested in how you guys are actually doing with the concept of having an optimization mod for the artificial intelligence in this game. we are scared that you guys have scrapped the idea since we haven't heard anything from it in a long time. if you guys are still (planning) to work on it we are highly supporting you to make it a succes! i'm not a modder myself but maybe i could help you out by giving advise on the A.I. behaviour by testing it out or something???? we are just really hyped about the idea of having smarter A.I. in a mod such as "Shockwave"! we would love to hear from u guys soon.

Making 15 new AIs isn't really an easy feat.
I am mostly going to be changing the main frame behavior + optimization ( basically removing the annoying unit spam in their base doing nothing, and reducing the lag).

I am not going to increase difficulity or add any new behavior for now.

I will start working on it as soon as ROTR 1.87 is released publicly, as I am currently occupied with its AI.

Yes Mizo!
You are a saviour, new AI would be perfect, but make sure hard AI is harder than before biggrin.gif

Maybe it will be harder, under the assumption that if the AI no longer keeps their armies idling in their base but actually attack with them.

Like I stated before, if I ever get to touch SHW , it's not gonna be as complex as ROTR's AI, but rather it mainly going to do some bug fixing and optomization.

All of my yes. Maybe Tao AI can use the nuclear missile properly now.

Posted by: Rohan 18 Sep 2017, 4:40

Yes, new and improved ai would be wonderful! smile.gif

Mizo pls, USA Vanilla AI. Literally unplayable.

Posted by: JasonGunfire 18 Nov 2017, 16:58

Comrade General,

Vanille USA is in fact playable. what you are seeing there is a small issue that can occur to all different general types. I'm not a modder myself, but i think it has to do with AI "pathfinding"? because it looks like the AI has been adjusted to think the enemy troops will arrive from the other side instead of the correct side. huh.gif

Posted by: Mizo 20 Nov 2017, 13:21

If you are referring to defense emplacements then that's completely map related. The only thing I can adjust is their main base to be better fortified on the side facing the map center.

Posted by: ULTRA Faff 29 Nov 2017, 22:51

Not me, current one works perfect. The changes made to AI in the latest ROTR ruined the game for me

Posted by: red_hootie 3 Dec 2017, 1:25

I disagree. The current one needs some much needed love, as it's virtually brain-dead after so long.

Posted by: Mizo 3 Dec 2017, 11:29

If am gonna ever edit this it'll most lilely revolve around bug fixing and optimisation.

A new AI for ShockWave would be great!!

Posted by: vectorguy 2 May 2018, 10:44

Interested.

Small problems with Shockwave AI (TBH, I just wrote this comment to keep this topic alive biggrin.gif)

- AI don't always react to defensive stationary structures and passing enemy units.
Apparently, they are more likely to pass through them and get themselves killed.

- Most AI on medium difficulty are having issues with their economy.
Most generals don’t even build (Black markets, supply drop, and internet center) except vanilla China!
You can see a huge difference between Vanilla china and other generals. As result they'’ll stop attacking you and rebuild their base.
(remember this only counts for medium difficulty.)

- AI don’t capture oil derricks/refinery’s often. they will mostly ignore them.
(they will definitely leave them when they have a start economy of 5000$.) this counts for medium difficulty as well.

There are also plenty of score streaks, units, buildings they won't use at all. but i guess you guys are already aware of that.
A couple examples of things they dont use: Strategy center bombardment, carrier airstrike, leaflet drop, GLA Mines scorestreak, bunker upgrades,
stationary airport, cluster mines, mine dispenser, flame thrower, listening outpost, and so on.

You guys may already know all of them.., but maybe not..
GREETINGS smile.gif

me2 man!

it would be great, because RoTR and SHW are the best mods out there

Posted by: KingKickAss 15 Jan 2019, 19:42

Yes please. Even just a little fix for Tank not building Hackers/Nuke not using nukes.

Though ROTR has a pretty nasty AI, would be interesting to see what sort of stuff the shockwave generals could pull off.

Posted by: dm5k 5 Nov 2019, 2:32

Did the AI ever see any improvements? It's still pretty bad from what I've seen.
