SWR Productions Forum _ Theatre of War _ Air war in Europe

This is the first time I write fan-fiction, so feel free to rip it to pieces. How else I'm gonna know if I'm a complete noob, or not?

This is the story about the Russian pilot, Major Nikolai Shoigu.

2045
Descending from a family well-known in Russia, Nikolai was a grandson of former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. Ever since the deposition of the former government, it was hard for the young man to fit in to this new Russia. Often seen as an offspring of the old KGB elites, he had to double his efforts to prove himself just to get the same treatment as other cadets of the prestigious Moscow Military Academy. Unfortunately this didn't change, not even when the Russo-European War started. Just a mere month after the graduation, they were all sent to VVS bases across Western Russia and given orders of a full-blown invasion of Europe. Nikolai still couldn't understand what was going on, until someone told him about what happened in Kaliningrad. He had his doubts, especially about how fast the response of the military was. Even after years of diplomatic strains with the ECA, it would take months of preparations for the quantity of aircraft and missiles he was seeing now. But, if he was to ever win the trust of his colleges and senior officers, asking too many questions was not a very good start. So, he decided not to. He wasn't just another rookie. Being suspicious for his background made him a not very much liked rookie. After a few short flights in a Berkut, he was given orders to escort two Backfires with the rest of the squadron. The mission was a go.

''Comrade Colonel, targets are in range.'',the voice of Backfire pilot confirmed.
''You are authorized to fire, Major!'', Colonel replied.
Soon after, four cruise missiles rained down on the Polish military airbase near Cracow. Despite the range of the missiles, Nikolai could still see the destruction from afar. The mission was a success. After they returned to their base in Brest-Litovsk, everyone were thrilled about the news of great victories in the initial phase of the war. Comrades in the Russian Army were storming the whole Eastern Europe. VVS support was of great importance, the moral was high.
Months passed. At fist he was sent to do some of the most dangerous missions. Some of them included facing ECA fighters that managed to escape the destruction of most of European air assets on the ground. Russians didn't want anyone to comprise their undisputed airdominance. Nikolai was well know by now. His seniors were satisfied. They didn't started to like him any more than any other pilot, but at least he wasn't looked upon with distrust and sometimes even with disgust. His colleges started to respect him . Many of them had flown together in the last few months. Having shot down dozens of Tigers and few Harriers in such a short time meant a lot to his reputation.

2048
Three years have passed. Major Nikolai Shoigu is one of the best pilots in VVS.
In three years he has piloted Berkuts, now-retired Frogfoots, new Sokols, Backfires and even a Blackjack. He was awarded four times, including a medal for managing to escape unharmed, after being shot down by a Wotan over Netherlands, while still under control of the ECA forces, something that was considered impossible, due to the number of hidden bulldog turrets and other types of defenses used by the dug-in Dutch General van der Meer.

It was a regular day in the base, when someone turned on Channel One.
''US President William Bradford was authorized by the Congress to use military
force against the Russian Federation, citing America's geo-political responsibilities
and Russian warcrimes as his justification to support the ECA. The United States of America declares war on Russia. War is officially declared World War III.''
Initial silence soon gave way to loud shock. Some were afraid what might follow, since both countries still had thousands of ICBMs, some were confused and shocked, especially after years of US isolation, and some were even happy and eager to settle old scores with their long-time rival.
Nikolai, on the other hand, knew that itwould be a real mess. The skys will be filled with Rapors and Stealth Bombers, and the land will be swarmed by thousands of drones, which won't be easy targets for Russian aviation, due to their size and stealth capabilities. Will the Military be able to counter this new threat, he was to find out very soon.

It is my third, unplanned, night shift, because I'm doing a favor to a college, so forgive me if there's too much typos. :-)

Thanks, man. I wanted to try and see if anyone likes it. I have a few more ideas about Berkut-Raptor dogfights. :-)

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART II

''The Military of our Motherland has never been defeated in a major war. Every single enemy of Russia, that steped on this sacred soil, has been squashed like a bug. The same will happen now. Just like the great, honorable commander of our enemy, Bernard Montgomery once said:
'Rule 1, on page 1 of the book of war, is: "Do not march on Moscow". Various people have tried it, Napoleon and Hitler, and it is no good.' Remember this every time you're facing our enemies! They know this as well.', Colonel shouted. He was trying to raise the morale, after the initial shock that came with the announcement earlier that week. Nikolai knew it all, but he also knew how close was it every time and how many people had to die. He was also one of the first to go right through the center of this incoming steel storm. Russia does have a very long history of successes against invasions. Americans on the other hand, have a short history, but in those couple of hundred years, they managed to defeat everyone and conquer anything they laid their eyes on, except Vietnam.
''Ok., boys, gear up! We have a job to do.'', Colonels' words interrupted Nikolais' thoughts.
That day, they had a routine mission. Intercept few Harriers, secure the skys for the Backfires. It was confirmed that some US aircraft were spotted by Russian satellites, but it seemed it was just a token example of support for the ECA.
Nikolai entered his Berkut. Six more Berkuts took off.
Behind them, two huge Backfires flew. The target was a Research Plant 50 km SW of Paris. FSB reported that the facility housed one of the Pandoras used in French Neutron bombings. Suddenly, Nikolais' radar detected two targets.
''Probably Harriers. Moving to intercept. Follow me.'', Major Stechin gave order to Captain Korsakov. Two Berkuts broke off. Harriers changed direction.
''Cowards. As soon as they see us, they run.'', Stechin laughed. Nikolai knew that those Harriers can't escape. But, they never do that. At least not since '45. As years passed, Europeans acted more carefully. Acts of heroism, when a few Harriers would go straight in the middle of a Berkut swarm were rare, especially later, when ECA commanders simply forbade those actions, because they couldn't afford loosing already scarce aircraft and well-trained pilots. Suddenly, Major Stechin reported 4 more targets. This time, he sounded worried: '' I have 4 boogies on my radar. These are fast movers. No way they're Harriers. Need help ASAP. Won't be able to runaway.''
Nikolai knew something was wrong. It seemed too easy.
''Oh, God! I have 16 other dots on my radar. Only Sokols move this fast.'', Stechin was already panicking.
''Base, we have unidentified squadron of fast moving targets converging on our position. Requesting permission to abort the mission.'', Nikolai dispatched the message.
''Permission not granted. This mission is of highest priority.'', Colonel replied.
Nikolai: ''Shit! It's easy for him to say that. Stechin, we are 500 km from the nearest Grumble battery. I'm aborting this. We move east, now!''
Stechin: ''Damn it! You heard the Colonel. We can't just disobey a direct order!''
Nikolai: ''What a hell are you talking about. You were ready to leave just a minute ago. If those things are what I think they are, we have 60 seconds to go, before we're in their range.
Everyone, lets get the fuck out of here!''
Stechin: ''Ah, shit! Ok! But, we're going down for this, Niko!''
Nikolai: ''Very likely, but we will certainly go down if we don't go right the fuck now! And I'm not speaking figuratively!''

Berkuts started moving east, while Backfires left the group and headed back, southeast. Nikolai hopped boogies wouldn't follow them. Still, seven Berkuts were in danger now. And, they were being chased by 20, maybe more, enemy aircraft.
''Holy Mother of God! My AESA says these are Raptors!'', Stechin yelled.
''Yes, I see it, too! I figured. Listen now, boys. They'll catch us up. Our best chance is to try to outmaneuver their missiles and get in range with Grumbles. Then we'll work in conjunction with them. We can't beat all of them, but lets hope we can shoot down a few. With a little luck, rest of them will fall back.''
Stechin: ''You better be right, because I just got a BVR missile lock!''
Nikolai: ''So, it begins!''

Sorry, just had to use the HK line. smile.gif

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART III

Stechin: ''Performing evasive maneuvers to break missile lock!''
Nikolai: ''Everyone, split in three groups. Two jets per group. I'll go with Stechin and Korsakov. The rest of you, dispatch our position to those Grumble batteries, as soon as you come in range!''
''Roger that, Sir!'', someone replied.
Stechin: ''Missile lock is still on. Shit!''
Nikolai: ''Don't do anything yet! Wait for the missiles to close up! Remember how we did it in Lyon last year?''
Stechin:''You're completely insane. No way I'm gonna do that again!''
Nikolai: ''You don't have much of a choice now, don't you Stechin!?''
Stechin knew he was going to get hit if he ignores Nikolais' advice. Four missiles were raining down on his Berkut.
Nikolai: ''Now, Stechin! Now! Do it!''
Stechins' Berkut moved left and suddenly up. All four missiles passed by. Berkuts' legendary maneuverability looked even more astonishing, when you see it in real war situation. But still, this was just a beginning. 19 more Raptors were on their tails. Now Nikolai got a missile lock alarm go off.
Nikolai: ''They're on me, now!''
Nikolai started to move hard left and down. Korsakov moved hard right and up.
Stechin: ''Keep it up, boys! They're splitting up!''
Nikolai: ''We're still outnumbered 3:1 Stechin! There's nothing to be happy about!''
Raptors were now in three groups. There were 7 of them in first two groups and 5 in the third. The one that missed Stechin was heading back. The first group of Raptors went after the first group of two Berkuts. Five Raptors went for the other two Berkuts, while the second group of Raptors chased Nikolai, Stechin and Korsakov.
''We are now at 400 km from Grumbles.'', one of the Berkut pilots responded.
Nikolai: ''Good! We're almost in range. Hang in there, guys. We can do this.''
Stechin: ''Got two more missile locks!''
Korsakov: ''I lost contact with the second. group of Berkuts! They're not on my radar!''
Nikolai got two missile locks more as well.
Nikolai: ''On my mark, everyone start the maneuvers!''
Stechin: ''We won't be able to do this much longer!''
The missiles were approaching fast. Nikolai gave the order. His and Stechins' jets almost collided. Missiles missed again.
''Oh God! Oh God! Thank you, sweet Jesus! Thank you so much!'', Stechin yelled.
That was insanely close! Stechin, you are one crazy SOB!'', Nikolai responded.
Korsakov: ''Got a missile lock!''
Stechin: ''Another Raptor is preparing for a missile lock.''
In a moment, a sole Berkut from the second group appeared on the radar. It moved on the position of the Raptor preparing to fire on Stechin. A burst of autocannon fire rained down. Raptor was shredded to pieces. Pilot still managed to eject. But the other one fired its missiles on Korsakov. Than it started going back.
Korsakov: ''Performing evasive maneuvers!''
Nikolai: ''What a hell are you doing, Korsakov!? You should've waited longer''
A few seconds later, one missile missed, but the other three scored a direct hit.
Nikolai: ''Did he eject!? Korsakov, can you hear me!? Korsakov!?''
Stechin: ''Don't bother. He's dead.''
Nikolai continued calling for Korsakov. There was no response.
''We are in range of the Grumbles. The rest of the Raptors are moving back. We made it!'', one of the pilots from the first group dispatched.
''Squadron, return to base immediately!'', Colonel gave his order.
Nikolai: ''That son of a bitch! He would send us all in our deaths, just so he could get another pat on the back by his beloved Aleksandr!''
Stechin: ''Who's in for some rank downgrading later, boys?''
Nikolai: ''Fuck him and his ranks. We just lost a friend, Stechin! Show some respect, will you!?''
Stechin: ''What can I do about that, now? We're lucky to be alive. This is war, Niko. People die every day. Korsakov today. Tomorrow you or me.''
Squadron was approaching the base. While they were landing, a group of officers, headed by the Colonel waited on the runway exit.
''He's waiting on the runway! He must be pissed off!'', Stechin noted.
''He is pissed off!? Really!? Oh, we'll see who's pissed of, right about now!'', Nikolai was exiting the Berkut angrily.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART IV

Stechin: ''Calm down! You'll get us all in trouble. Colonel is pissed enough, already.''
Nikolai ignored Stechin.
''So, 'General' Shoigu, you decided to abort my mission, may I ask... Ah, I forgot. You're a fucking Major! Which means under MY command!'', Colonel was trying to sound sarcastic.
''Permission to speak, Sir!?'', Nikolai was barely holding his anger.
Colonel: ''No! You do not have a permission to speak! You have disobeyed a direct order. An order that came from the top, and by doing so, you've put my ass on the line, before my superiors! Since I'm your superior, I'll put yours as well.
Arrest the Major, boys!''
Two MPs approached Nikolai. He moves back: ''Don't touch me! I know where to go! I'm the pilot of the VVS of the Russian Federation! Not a damn kamikaze! We would all be dead, if I haven't aborted the mission. And we couldn't finish the mission anyway. And how comes that intelligence could fail to see 20 Raptors!? If the Yanks are sending so many of them now, there could be hundreds of them in Britain. They sure as hell won't send everything they have on one squadron of Berkuts!''
Colonel: ''Take him away! And Major Stechin as well!''
Stechin: ''But, I...''
Colonel: ''Take them away!!! Now!''
The MP guards complied.

Airbase prison cell was small for the two men arguing about whose fault was for the situation in which they were.
Stechin: ''I told you to calm down. But you had to argue with him!"
Nikolai: "You wouldn't even be here, if you followed those idiotic orders so blindly!''
Stechin: "Yes, and I'm thankful for being alive, but we could have avoided this. Fuck the Colonel. If you kept your mouth shut, we wouldn't be here."
Nikolai: "Korsakov was our friend. He died because no-one gives a damn for us. I can't just pretend like nothing happened. For people like Colonel and his superiors, we're completely expendable."
Stechin: "I know that. But, how are we supposed to make a difference by sitting here, while our comrades are dying out there."
Nikolai: "I guess you're right, but I..."
"Major, Colonel wants you in his office. Both of you.", the guard interrupted them.

"Ok. I want you to listen carefully. We have a problem. Those Raptors didn't go away. They returned and destroyed our Early Warning Outpost. Outpost to which YOU led them. The Grumbles shot down 4 Raptors, but now we are exposed to stealth attacks. Who knows, maybe those Nighthawks are on the way right now. So, it's your call. You may sit in that cell and wait to be court-marshaled or we can do our jobs and I might just forget about your blatant disobedience."
"Now you ask us to ...", Stechin hits Nikolais' hip before he could finish.
"We'll do it, Sir!", Stechin said.
Colonel: "I knew you would come to your senses. Good! Now, off to work!"

"Why did you do that!?", Nikolai was upset.
Stechin: "Have you even heard what I said in that cell? This is what we do. We should be happy. Imagine how is it to those poor conscripts. We're the lucky ones."

They were getting in their Berkuts. More than 20 other jets would join them from other airbases. The mission was to guard the air, while the engineers were setting up a new Outpost.

Nikolai: "Who's leading the mission?"
Stechin: "Some newbie. I think they said his name is Agatov. He's a Captain."
Nikolai: "A Captain!? The Colonel has lost his mind. We are Majors. What sense does it make to put a lower rank newbie as mission leader?"
Stechin: "Well, that's what you get when you're screwing around with military hierarchy. Ok. We are closing to the group. Captain Agatov? Do we have a contact?"
Agatov: "Roger that, Major. I understand you're under my command. Never gave an order to a higher ranking officer, but I hope we'll get this through."
Stechin: "Don't worry, Captain. We're all in the same boat. We have to work together."
Nikolai: "So how long you're in the VVS, Captain?"
Agatov: "Five months. Three of which I've spent in combat missions."
Nikolai: "Ever shot down anything?"
Agatov: "A couple of Tigers and a Harrier. Nothing special."
Nikolai: "You're right. That is nothing special."
Stechin: "Nikolai, Nikolai. Take it easy. I don't remember you being any better in your first 5 months."
Nikolai: "Did anyone asked you anything, Stechin? I'm talking to him now. So, please, would you mind?"
Agatov: "I don't feel offended. As far as I'm concerned, I feel honoured to fight along side people like you."
Stechin: "Alright now, you two love birds. We have the Grumbles in sight. Maybe, we can find you a room after we do this."
Nikolai: "Yeah, yeah, very funny, Stechin. I can see you haven't lost your 'sense of humor'."
"Maybe all of you can get a nice room later. But now I would like you to watch out for any intruders.", Grumble commander interfered.
Stechin: "Vasin, you old commie, is that you?"
Vasin: "No, this is his late aunt, Svetlana."
Stechin: "Hahaha. That actually made me laugh."
Vasin: "Now seriously, engineers will need about an hour more to set up that radar. Till than, you boys keep the sky safe."
Nikolai: "You heard the man. Lets do this."

Um, I not getting a lot of feedback on this. So, what do you think people? Please, feel free to be brutally honest about it. I would like to know if it's any good.

Raptors are getting worfed pretty hard out there. Looked like a clean bandit sweep, then somehow a Berkut makes it out of group 2 and a good man splashes down out of a deus ex machina.

QUOTE (Serialkillerwhale @ 13 May 2015, 18:55) *
Raptors are getting worfed pretty hard out there. Looked like a clean bandit sweep, then somehow a Berkut makes it out of group 2 and a good man splashes down out of a deus ex machina.

Well one Berkut in group was shot down, but I forgot to mention that. The other one survived, because of agility. So, in the end you got 2 Berkuts down, one Russian pilot dead and one Raptor down, zero Americans dead. And the only reason that the other Berkuts made it, were those Grumbles. I was trying to emphasize on US air superiority lore and game-vise. If I continue to write this, that will be emphasised even more.

Posted by: Serialkillerwhale 22 May 2015, 4:49

Honestly. It wasn't the raptor that was the problem, According to Nikolai, who's probably an experienced pilot, the raptors were basically certain death. We don't see that, maybe a passing note about the damage taken to the other groups of berkuts after they scattered.

In short, it doesn't "Feel" like it was a suicide mission.

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 22 May 2015, 19:15

It's not just about Raptors' quality. Berkut is also great. This wasn't supposed to be a suicide mission. The Russian intelligence didn't pass the information to Nikolais' squadron. They wouldn't even go against a jet which is, in the worst case, on par with theirs, plus with 3 : 1 odds in Raptors favour. And I'm sorry if the story is a bit messy. I'm a rookie. Just as I said, feedback is always welcomed, because I really wanna see is it worth it. So far, you seem to be the only one interested, otherwise you wouldn't know what's missing. And for that, I thank you. smile.gif

Posted by: Serialkillerwhale 23 May 2015, 3:51

The point isn't that. It's that the Berkuts were ostenably being "Kamikazes" if they went through with it. 3-1 odds and a 2-1 kill ratio doesn't exactly scream "We would have died if we stayed"

It seems more like Nikolai got cold feet than that he refused to be sent to his death. It's something in most war shows, where the "Hero" escaping sees his allies dropping around.

Possibly add some radio messages from the other groups, with them screaming or something as they got blown to bits, or possibly about their inability to eject.

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 23 May 2015, 14:52

I could add some details. Berkuts started a routine mission, which turned out to be a suicide one. Kamikaze pilots went to their deaths willingly. It was even considered an honour. Berkut pilots didn't had the right information. US Air Force would have a numerical superiority. It wouldn't be enough for a Western-style airsuperiority over Russian airspace, but it would negate the Russian Air Force to act offensively. I could also add that the Americans found out about Russian plan to destroy that Pandora. They found out about the exact number of Russian aircraft involved, so they sent a squadron that would ensure the mission fails. And it did. The only reason why the kill ratio was 2 : 1 is Nikolais' correct judgement. Otherwise, they would have died. All of them. Also this is by no means a reality. It's supposed to be more lore-related.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART V

Berkuts were guarding the airspace over radar site. There was 26 of them. They split in 13 pairs and guarded some 15 km radius. Nikolai, Stechin and Agatov were trying to be funny, with the occasional Vasins bitching how boring and unoriginal they are. At one moment Nikolai thought about Korsakov. He was surprised how soon he got back in "normal". He was even afraid that this war will take away his basic human emotions. He thought how he lost a friend that same day and now, just a few hours later, he was telling jokes with a newbie he never met before. Vasin interrupted his thoughts: "We're almost done here. Just keep doin' what you're here for and we might make it alive from this shit."
"Look at from the bright side, Vasin. If something happens, you'll get a nice little reunion with you aunt Svetlana.", Stechin laughed.
Vasin: "Yeah, I'm laughin' my ass out on that one, SteNchin."
Nikolai: "Oh, Vasin, don't invoke memories of Stechins' high school nicknames. He becomes...uh... a bit upset."
"You know what? Fuck you both! I'm trying to ease the situation a bit, but you're just being jerks now.", Stechin switched his headset off.
"Stechin? Stechin? Oh, crap! He's acting like a PMS teenager. Someone, please, signal to Major Stechin that we need a constant communication. Captain Agatov, please give the order.", Nikolai was now upset.
"I would, Major, but given he's quite angry now, plus me being a lower-rank rookie, and his superior in this mission, means I'll probably get shot right from the sky, if I try to give the order.", Agatov replied.
While they were arguing, a huge explosion could be seen from were they were.
"What a fuck was that!? Was that a bunker-buster!?", Nikolai yelled.
"We... und... ack...", static was all they could hear.
Nikolai: "This is serious. Agatov, I'm taking over, if you don't mind."
Agatov: "Be my guest, Sir!"
Stechin saw the explosion as well: "What a hell was that?"
Nikolai: "Good. You're back. I think Vasin's in trouble."
Static was slowly turning into a human voice: "Do you read me? Volk2 to Strizhi5! Do you read me? I repeat, we're under attack!
Stechin: "That's Vasin! He's alive!"
Nikolai: "Not for long. Vasin! Can you hear me!? Vasin!?"
Vasin: "I hear you! We're under attack! Need help ASAP!"
Nikolai: "What was that? It didn't pass by us!"
Vasin: "I didn't see it. But it must be a Nighthawk! And it didn't pass by you, but, probably above you. We don't know where is it, or how many of them are there."
Nikolai: "Casualties? Did the engineers set up that Outpost?"
Vasin: "We lost Kulikovo1! But 3 other grumbles are ok. The radar's still not over. We need a few more minutes!"
Nikolai: "You have seconds! Maybe less. We don't see it!"
Stechin: "A few of us can try to find it."
Nikolai: "Ok. Agatov, you take 4 guys and go up. We'll try to guard the rest of the battery. If we can't find the damn thing, lets try to stop further attacks here."
Agatov complied and 5 Berkuts went to a higher altitude. Ten minutes later, Vasin confirmed the radar is on: "We don't see anything here. Son of a bitch is gone."
Nikolai: "At least they can't do this again. What about that replacement for Kulikovo1?"
Vasin: "It's on it's way here."
USAF raids were quite often at this point of war. Although not as successfull as they might have expected, but they did a harm to Russias war efforts. Having the best air defence system in the world against the best air force in the world was a game of nerves. Soon, Sokols were the only one capable of evading much of USA/ECA air defence assets. Still, it wasn't an easy task for Russian intelligence to keep track of those Italian Mobile Sensor Arrays. The war was turning into a bloody stalemate.

Nikolais' squadron was returning to base. There, they wrote a report for the Colonel. He was yelling, as always, because "they made all this happen, when they aborted the mission". Nikolai didn't try to argue. Stechin slightly nodded.
"You're dismissed!", Colonel yelled.
"Sir!", Nikolai and Stechin saluted and were about to go.
"Oh, there's just one more thing. Report for Major Alexeievs' Suvorov2 group, tomorrow at 5:00 AM."
"Yes, Sir!", they saluted again.
Stechin: "They're sending us to fly Sokols. Good. Maybe we'll make it through this war, after all."
Nikolai: "I don't know. We'll be getting a lot of more dangerous mission than."
Stechin: "Now wait a minute! What a hell is that suppose to mean? Where did this pussy Nikolai came from? And what did he do with my friend, who was ready to die for his country?"
Nikolai: "Oh, a 'pussy Nikolai', you say? I don't know who was in need of new underwear more, when those Raptors showed up? Care to explain, Major "Maverick" Stechin?
Stechin: "'Maverick'? Where did you pull that one from? Your grandmas' favorite movie?
Nikolai: "You never watched old movies? 'Top Gun'? Rings any bells? Oh, why am I even trying."
Stechin: "Ah, I see. Well, I'll go get some sleep now. But I'll check my, uh... Facebook profile, yes. Hahaha."
Nikolai: "You're hopeless. Facebook was good, back in the old days, you know."
Stechin: "Yeah, yeah. See ya tomorrow."
Stechin left. Nikolai was heading for his room. He was thinking about what happened that day. He couldn't sleep. Sometime, about 1:00 AM, he finally fell asleep.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART VI

Nikolai was in the hallway, waiting. A stunning blonde passed by smiling to him. He smiled back. It was 4:15 AM. Stechin opened the door of his room and got out. He was sleepy and all messy, still trying to buckle his belt.
"Well aren't you one fine example of a Russian pilot and officer?", Nikolai was being sarcastic.
Stechin: "Zip it, Niko!"
Nikolai: "Original, yeah."
Stechin: "No, really. Your pants zipper."
Nikolai: "Oh, shit! So that's why that Valentina chick smiled when she passed by. Crap!"
Stechin: "Yeah. You're pretty much screwed. I mean literally. That girl's crazy."
Nikolai: "What do you mean?"
Stechin: "I mean you should buy her a drink, genius."
Nikolai: "Oh, good. I thought you're gonna say she'll report me for sexual harassment or somethin'."
"Uh... yeah. You'll definitely get laid until this war ends.", now Stechin was being sarcastic.
Nikolai: "Alright, lets move. We have a meeting with Alexeievs' squadron."
While going to the dining room, they heard their names on the speakers.
"Oh, God, Colonel's crazy. I thought he said 5:00 AM. When are we supposed to eat?", Stechin complained.
They entered Colonel office. Major Alexeiev was drinking tea with him. It was quite unusual to see the Colonel calm.
"I suppose you already know who Major Alexeiev is.", he offered them a seat.
Stechin: "Haven't had a privilege in person, Sir."
"Major.", Alexeiev nodded.
Colonel: "Here's the thing, boys. From now on, you'll be assigned to Suvorov2 Special Bomber Squadron under the direct command of Major Alexeiev. I assume you already know what kind of aircraft they use, so I'll just let the Major to instruct you with all the details. Now if you'll excuse me, gentlemen, I have some business to take care of."
All three of the Majors stood up and saluted the Colonel while he was leaving.

Alexeiev: "I know that all this seems awkward to you, but I'll state my reasons. Now, since our squadron is in a dire need of experienced pilots, and both of you have flown Su-50s, I've requested that you be reassigned to Suvorov2."
Nikolai: "Why now? We've been here for the last three years."
Alexeiev: "Alright. Let me get this straight. The Colonel's an asshole, right? Right?"
Nikolai and Stechin nodded.
Alexeiev continued: "Since he's a careeristic prick, he will eventually send you to your deaths. He cares not for your lives, which is a waste for both you and the Motheland. Many guys like you have died in escort missions because he and those like him are protected by their connections with a certain General."
Stechin: "We know that. Why don't we go straight to the point."
Alexeiev: "Ok. I know what you did yesterday. We had a radio link, so we know everything that happened. You showed us that you can think outside of the box, and coordinate your actions. Especially you, Nikolai. That's exactly what we need for the types of missions we do."
Nikolai: "So what are types of missions you do?"
Alexeiev: "I can't tell you that right now. But I can do it tonight, when we get ready to go to Suvorov2 airbase."
Stechin: "You have your own airbase?"
Alexeiev: "Yes, we do. And a bar, a pool, a football field(soccer for the Yanks) and an "entertainment" area for the boys."
Nikolai: "Seriously? All of that and a fricken whorehouse? In the middle of an airbase, in the middle of a war?"
Alexeiev: "Well, not exactly in the middle. It's more a bit to the right of it. And it's not a whorehouse. It's where all the girls form the army go out."
Stechin: "No fucking way. Who do we have to kill for that?"
Alexeiev: "Like I said, not here. That's it, gentlemen. I expect you to be ready exactly at 7:00 PM. You're free to go."

Nikolai and Stechin left the Colonels' office and headed for the dining room.
Stechin: "So what do you think?"
Nikolai: "I don't know. All those things he mentioned; somehow it sounds that we'll have to do some serious shit."

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART VII

Nikolai and Stechin were in a big conference room, repurposed for the staff and the pilots. Most of them watched an enormous TV screen, that served as a main information source of what was going home. News of US air raids had a significant effect on the morale. Some were afraid for their families, especially those from the northern coastal regions of Russia. Although not as destructive as expected, the raids took their share of toll on both military and civilian infrastructure. Civilian and military casualties were still rare, but that was mostly thanks to Russias' mighty VKO (Aerospace Defence Forces).

Nikolai and Stechin were arguing about the state in which military was after those nuclear bombings in France.
Nikolai: "I heard some guys talking about Suvorov2 air base this morning, after we left the Colonels' office. It seems we're being redeployed to western Germany. Probably Dortmund."
Stechin: "Dortmund!? Shit, but the Euros already took most of France. What are we supposed to do there? Run them over while tryin' to take off? Because that's what will happen. We don't have enough manpower to hold the damn region, after those sons of bitches used Pandoras."
Nikolai: "Yeah, but we'll be flyin' Sokols. The damn things are as fast as a Raptor, highly maneuverable and above all, stealthed."
Stechin: "You have a point there. But still, I think it's a mistake they're sendin' us so close, because if this shit doesn't get better, we'll be movin' back soon. And I hate moving."
Nikolai looks at his watch: "Time to move. It's 6:40 (PM). Did you pack your stuff?"
Stechin nodded.
Nikolai: "Good. Let's get 'em."
After taking their baggage, two men went to the runway. Major Alexeiev was already there. He was standing near the entrance to the control tower, taking a smoke.
They approached.
"I thought you said 7 o'clock, Major?",Stechin was being direct.
"Yes I did. And now it's 6:50. Or 6:52, to be precise. So, there's no problem. You two smoke?", Alexeiev responded, while offering them cigarettes.
They both declined.
Alexeiev: "An Mi-40 is being loaded as we speak."
Nikolai: "I have a feeling that I'm gonna loose my hearing until we get there. I mean, 7 hours in a Hunchback?"
Alexeiev: "No, it won't be 7 hours. More like, 2."
Stechin: "That's impossible. Unless you've put some Sukhois' engine in it."
Alexeiev: "Don't worry. I'll explain everything when we get there. Lets move. That Hunchback's waiting."
Major Alexeiev pointed them to a BMP.

Russian Air Force always kept their Helipads separated from the rest of an air base. A few Hinds and Hellions flew over them. They were nearing the Helipad. When the BMP stopped, three Majors got out. Alexeiev ordered the guards to open the gate. Pilot was standing in front of the metal monstrosity. He saluted them. Alexeiev saluted back without saying a word. They got onboard. A few minutes later the familiar, deafening sound of HBs' engine was becoming louder and louder. Soon, they were air-bourne.

For almost two hours, they sat in silence. Stechin looked through the small window. He could see a few lights here and there, but what caught his attention were the bright lights afar. The lights became clearer as they closed in. After a minute or two he saw it. He still couldn't believe, but it was it.
Nikolai was sitting on the other side, so he couldn't see it, but he knew Stechin well.
"What's wrong, Stechin?", he asked.
Stechin droped his headset and yelled: "You lied to us!?"
Alexeiev was calm.
Nikolai: "Hey, hey! What it is, man!?"
Stechin: "Come here, Niko, and see for yourself!"
Nikolai unbuckled and carefully approached Stechins' window. His face was changing. He could see a set of lit giant concrete fortifications and a bunch of well know flags standing next to Russian ones.
"You brought us here!? To Berlin!? To him!?", now Nikolai was yelling.
"Relax. Both of you. No-one's going to 'him'. We are just passing by. We'll be there soon.", Alexeiev was still calm.
"Passing by!? Since when do we have to pass by Berlin to get to Dortmund from Dresden!?", Nikolai asked again.
"Ok. Sit down, Major Shoigu. Put your headset back on, Stechin. Unless you want me to leave you right here. With 'him'.", Alexeiev was still calm, but determined.
They both complied unwillingly. Stechin could see they were moving further from Aleksandrs' citadel. Some 5 minutes later they landed on an airport. Nikolai saw three Sokols on the runway.
"Get out. Leave your stuff. Don't worry. They'll be waiting for you when we get to Dortmund.", Alexeiev gave the order.
Stechin: "What are we doing here?"
Alexeiev: "Just follow me."
They complied, and entered through the control tower doors. Elevator took them to the top. The control room was crowded with busy staff. Alexeiev entered the office near the elevator. A big touchscreen desk was in the middle.
Alexeiev: "Come in and close the door."
He turned the desk on, and a bunch of plans and routs appeared on the map.
Alexeiev continued: "Now, we all know what happened in France. But, there's also one more problem. Those Research Facilities don't make just Pandoras and Manticores. We have some information about this so-called 'Venom protocol' they started using. A few reports from Scandinavia say little, but we intercepted a few encrypted messages between some resistance groups and we're still not sure, but they're planning something big. The Yanks are very likely involved. So what we need to do is to try and destroy any Research Plant the Euros establish in new territories they got in France."
Nikolai: "Ok, I want to get those guys as well, but why here? Why haven't you told us about this in Dortmund?"
Alexeiev changed the map: "Here's Suvorov2, here's Strasbourg. Some 10 klicks SW of Strasbourg, I lost two of my guys trying to get to one of those Plants. Wotan took 'em out. They had a Sensor Array. We busted the Wotan, but only one Sokol, out of tree, made it back. I've ordered a satellite to search the area and we have 20 minutes to get there, before it leaves. Those MSAs are a pain in the ass. We need to secure the area before we try to destroy those Plants. And I can't afford to wait for a replacement of those Sokols, and these are a reserve. They can wait. So, you know the drill. Lets move."
After Nikolai and Stechin listened carefully they went to the hangar. All the gear was there. Alexeiev soon joined them.
They approached the Sokols. Nikolai looked at the big jet. A focal point of the Russian aviation, the jet was beautiful, streamlined and covered with high-tech material. They entered their cabines. Alexeiev gave the order. A deafening, whistling sound of the engines was heard, and they were launched to the sky.

Although both Stechin and Nikolai already flew a Su-50, it was still incredible to fly that much faster than in an already very fast Berkut.
They were closing to the old French-German border.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART VIII

Three speedy Sokols were flying over western Germany. The Majors were discussing the final details of the plan. Stechin was chosen to attack the Mobile Sensor Array and to draw Wotans' initial fire from Nikolai and Alexeiev, and then Nikolai would destroy the Wotan. Alexeievs' part was to proceed to the Research Plant and destroy it, while Nikolai and Stechin would fire their remaining missiles incase that Alexeievs' missiles weren't enough, which was very likely, since the ECA heavily fortified the Plants due to their importance.

Alexeiev: "We are 100 klicks from that MSA and about 130 from the Wotan. The Plant is about 200 klicks from where we are now. You have your tasks. Lets try to get back home in one piece."
Stechin and Nikolai agreed and proceeded with Alexeievs' instructions.
Stechin started speeding up. Nikolai and Alexeiev followed closely behind. Since the MSA was more SW than the Wotan, Stechin split from the group. The other two Majors proceeded in the same direction, since the Plant was some 70 km behind the Wotan.
Stechin was about to get the advanced targeting data from the Surveillance satellite, when an imminent detection alarm went off. He had less than a minute before Wotan would start firing. Sokols' speed was a life-saver in this situation. When Wotan got the data from the MSA, Stechin started feeling what was it to be cooked to your death. Luckily, the plan was still under way and this was already anticipated. After some initial damage, Stechin fired two missiles on the MSA, and just seconds later Nikolai fired his on the Wotan. MSA was destroyed with one salvo, but the Wotan was tougher. The Wotan was still targeting Stechin, when Nikolai fired his second salvo, and Stechin was finally ok, although significantly damaged. Alexeiev was already moving to the Plant, according to the plan.
Alexeiev: "Good job so far. Are you ok, Stechin?"
"I'd feel wonderful if someone could assure me that I'm never gonna do this again!", Stechin was barely breathing, after extinguishing a bunch of small fires in his cockpit.
"Good. You'll be fine. Now both of you follow me. That Plant is finally at our mercy. We ...", Alexeiev stopped talking when two Gepards appeared on his radar.
Nikolai: "What's wrong, Major?"
Alexeiev: "Gepards. Two of them. You're about to see them."
Stechin: "Oh, shit! You two should move faster and fire the payload. I'll do it a few moments later, because if they fire on me first, I'm dead. I can't take anymore damage."
Alexeiev: "You're right. Nikolai, lets move!"
Nikolai complied. After he caught up with Alexeiev, they both accelerated, while Stechin followed behind.
Alexeiev: "On my mark. Lock is on."
Nikolai: "Affirmative!"
Alexeiev: "Fire when ready."
Two salvos of Sokols' missiles rained down on the Research Plant. Soon, both Nikolai and Alexeiev were exposed to bursts of autocanon fire. They both suffered damage, but still managed to maneuver and avoided some of it. In the same time, Stechin appeared and fired his salvo. A heavily damaged building now laid in ruins. Just when Alexeievs' and Nikolais' Sokols stealthed back on, both Gepards turned their attention to Stechin. He started going up, so some shells missed, but many of them hit the already damaged jet. In the very last moment Stechin stealthed back as well, but he was barely holding together. Nikolai and Alexeiev slowed down and kept the formation with Stechin.
"Are you ok?", Alexeiev asked.
"Please, stop asking me that.", Stechin was nervous.
"Alright, good job! We'll be landing in Dortmund.", Alexeiev added.
"Thank God. We made it. Hang in there, Stechin! We might get through this shit after all.", Nikolai interfered.
"Yeah, it's easy for you to say it. You weren't the one to be cooked and grinded to your death.", Stechin was still very upset.
Nikolai didn't tried to argue. He was glad to see his old friend still alive and in one piece.
They were closing in to the base.
Alexeiev: "There it is! You see it. That will be your home. That's the Suvorov2!"

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART IX

Suvorov2 was a real mess. Once, a very secure air base far behind the frontlines, now it became a target of increasingly often US/ECA raids. Raptors, Harriers, Nighthawks and Hunter Killers were preying the air base and, much more often the nearby major land military base "Yuri Dolgorukiy". Housing facilities filled with Kodiak, BMPs, Mstas and non other than Sentinels, the base was a very tempting target for American bombing runs. That made the Suvorov2 less of an attack priority, but they were hardly seen as irrelevant.

A repurposed Mi 26 was transporting a bunch of wounded when Stechin, Alexeiev and Nikolai landed. Stechin had a few minor burns, so he went to the emergency room. Kind of things you can see there in a time of large-scale military operations is not something you can forget. Nikolai accompanied Stechin, while Alexeiev returned to his office in the tower.
Stechin: "Damn, just look at these poor bastards. What a hell am I doin' here!? I got a few sunburns! They lost body parts, for Christs' sake!"
Nikolai: "Keep quiet. You have a few serious burns."
They finally got to the doctor. Stechin got a few prescribed drugs and a nice brunette nurse to put him some bandages, although his first thoughts had more to do with bondage when he saw the beautiful girl. Than they went to Alexeievs' office.

Nikolai: "Shit, that girl's smokin' hot. I'm goin' for the Wotan first, next time. You hear me?"
Stechin: "Yeah. She's a real bomb. Did you see those guys? So young. Such a shame. I have a feeling that we got so lucky to be pilots. They're the ones doing the real job."
Nikolai: "Bullshit! We just busted a Pandora-poppin' facility. That's way more than any of them could do. How many soldiers we saved by destroying it? Lighten up a bit, will ya!"
Stechin nodded silently.
Nikolai: "So, what's the name of the nurse?"
Stechin: "Elena. You'll never guess where she comes from."
Nikolai: "That makes her even hotter. Wait. No way! She's from Ryazan? No! That's not possible."
Stechin: "She lives just a few blocks from me. What a small world. Too bad that I had to go to this fuckin' war to meet a girl livin' in my city."
Nikolai: "Fuck it. That's how life works. Ok, enough whinin'. Lets move, Alexeiev is waiting."
When they entered Alexeievs' office, he was going through a bunch of plans on "the battle desk".
Alexeiev: "How bad was it, Stechin?"
Stechin: "I got a few burns, but nothing serious. I'm ready for the next mission."
Alexeiev: "Good. We'll need you. A new mission will be under way in a week. We have intelligence reports of new possible targets in eastern France. The Euros are setting a bunch of new bases, and the Yanks are providin' air support."
Nikolai: "What are we supposed to do about air superiority? Isn't that Berkuts' job?"
Alexeiev: "Yes it is, but they won't be flyin' with us."
Nikolai: "Than how we're gonna do it?"
Alexeiev: "One word. Grumbles."
Stechin: "Grumbles? No disrespect or anythin', but I have to ask - are you completely out of your mind?"
Alexeiev: "Funny. The guys from VKO had a completely same reaction. What's so wrong with the plan?"
Nikolai: "You still haven't told us what is the plan."
Alexeiev: "We'll be usin' Grumbles offensively."
Nikolai: "No wonder that VKO won't do it."
Alexeiev: "Who says they won't do it? They already accepted."
Stechin: "How? They must be crazy."
Alexeiev: "Will you two, please shut a fuck up for a second!? God!"
Nikolai: "Ok, ok. Sorry. Tell us the plan."
Alexeiev: "Listen carefully and, for the love of God, do not interrupt me!
I already contacted the 'Yuri Dolgorukiy' officers. They have a major land operation in the region. A Grumble battery will be right behind them. As for stealth detection, we'll have a bunch of conscripts on the ground. So, don't worry 'bout those Hawks. We'll have a secure com-link with mission 'Dolgorukiy' commander. Certain Colonel Pogosyan. Other details will be disclosed to you in a few more days. You're free to go."
They saluted, got out and went to their quarters.

You will, but I can't promise anything. My inspiration can come any time, but mostly during my night shifts. BTW, thanks. I'm glad you like it. smile.gif Do you have some suggestions or ideas? Also, feel free to say what you don't like or what would you change?

I say just continue what you're doing. You're at the point in the war where the US has joined and the Europeans are counterattacking. If I remember correctly you mentioned at one point that the ECA forces have already reached the former Franco-German border. From there they will enter Germany and eventually reach occupied Berlin, where Aleksandr is preparing for a last stand of massive proportions (if I remember my lore correctly). We don't know what canonically happens from then on, since it hasn't been revealed yet as far as I know. But between the current point in the story and the liberation of Berlin, there would still be a lot of space for you to write more parts.

I was thinking maybe explore events happening in other parts of the world? But that would be beyond the context of this story since your characters are soldiers on the front line of the Europe war, they have no reason to know about what's happening elsewhere. Unless Shoigu gets reassigned to the home front to help defend against US air raids (IIRC Russian cities like Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg are being bombed by US B-2s. And then China-Russia relations are getting worse and China is building up its forces along the border. And presumably the GLA is just watching and enjoying the sight of the superpowers killing each other.)

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 8 Sep 2015, 18:00

At one point I was thinking of sending Nikolai and Stechin to Arkhangelsk or Murmansk and although both cities are technicaly in Europe, I still think that Russia is continent for itself. There's plenty of potentially more interesting places in Western and Central Europe, because they are the battleground currently. And yes, I was thinking of showing the entire chaos all the way to Berlin, but I won't be going any further until an official story update comes. I would like for this to be atleast somewhat cannon.

Ah yes, Murmansk, that was one of the Russian cities that was mentioned in the story update as being bombed by B-2s. Your plan for the story sounds good. One thing I forgot to mention, you've written in your story that your characters have shot down Eurocopter Tigers and Harriers as those are the air units that ECA can build in-game, however, the ECA also uses Eurofighter Typhoons. Albeit, if I remember correctly, they use them sparingly because most European air forces were destroyed by Russian bombing raids on European airfields in the first few hours/days of the war. In-game Typhoons are used only for the Bomblet Strike, but story-wise they could have many other functions. And of course there are Victor and Vulcan bombers as well, which deliver the ECA generals powers. You might be able to fit those in the story.

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 29 Sep 2015, 17:18

Yeah. I could do that. I admit avoiding to use Eurofighter, simply because it's a GP unit. Not sure if I could use it in air-to-air scenario (it's multirole in RL). Maybe put it in a situation where a Berkut intercepts it's bomblet strike, although that's not possible game-wise. There were some contradictory stuff in the lore (contradictory to game), including units not present in-game, like BTR. Shouldn't be a problem. I'll look into it more closely. I'm a bit busy now, but I have a few solid ideas for a new part. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. smile.gif

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART X

Nikolai and Stechin were going through hell that week. Constant radar alarms made it impossible to sleep. They were increasingly nervous and had problems focusing on their daily routines. Everyone else seemed to be doing ok.
Nikolai and Stechin were in the hangar.
Nikolai: "I guess we'll get used to it... eventually."
"Huh... Yeah, yeah, I'll do it!", Stechin suddenly woke up.
Nikolai: "Hey, hey! No sleeping! What kind of example we're giving to the soldiers?"
Stechin: "Ok, ok! Stop shouting! I'm sick of those damn sirens already enough. What were you saying?"
Nikolai: "I said - we'll get used to it."
Stechin: "Get used to what?"
Nikolai: "To all this! Damn! You're really out of touch, you know. You should take an aspirin or at least a cup of coffee or somethin'."
Stechin: "Ok, Mom. Whatever you say. Damn Alexeiev and his "entertainment for the boys" in the middle of a frickin' airbase."
"How many times I have to tell you? It's not in the middle.", Alexeiev appeared out of nowhere.
Nikolai: "Stechin is a 'real' Russian. A couple of shots of vodka and he's done. Hangover for the next ten days."
Stechin: "Yeah, yeah. Very funny. Alex, please, for the love of God, could we tone down those damn sirens just a bit?"
Alexeiev: "No, wo can't. Our lives are more important than your hangover. And I would appreciate if we could keep it formal. At least in front of the troops."
Stechin: "Ok, sorry Major."
Nikolai: "You wanted to see us, Alexeiev?"
"Yes, we have some things to discuss about.", he responded.
Nikolai: "You want us to come to the office?"
Alexeiev: "Yes. You two head there now. I'll be there in 5, I just have to run a security check."
Nikolai and Stechin went towards the control tower.
"Oh Alex dear, please, could you tone down those sirens just itsy- bitsy (wink wink)? Oh, Alex dear, you know what? We could have a nice little chat latter in my room (wink wink). Faggot!", Nikolai ridiculed Stechin.
Stechin: "I didn't say... Fuck you."
Nikolai: "Ok, ok. Lets just go to the office. (cough) Faggot (cough).
Stechin sighed.

Alexeiev finished the security check. He headed for the office immediately. The two Majors were going through the plans on the battle-desk.
"You're ain't wastin' your time, I can see.", he entered the office.
"These plans are quite good. Did you do all this by yourself?", Nikolai asked.
"Myself? Of course not. An entire team from here and 'Yuri Dolgorukiy' participated. We'll need a good coordination of all assets, both in air and on ground in order for it to work. Anyway, that's not why I invited you. Sit here."
Majors complied.
Stechin: "Major, I really apologize for my behavior in the hangar, I really..."
"Hey, don't worry about it.", Alexeiev interrupted him.
He continued: "You two were great in that last mission. And we didn't get a chance to celebrate properly. I just happen to have a bottle of the best 'Russian Standard Imperia' vodka."
Nikolai and Stechin were just staring.
"What? What's wrong? You think I can't act as a human? Come on. Just a few drinks.", he was trying to convince them.
"Ok. But we're in the office. What if someone...", Stechin tried to sound worried.
"And do what? Report us? To who? Back to me?",Alexeiev interrupted him again.
Nikolai still just looked at Alexeiev, while he was putting three glasses at the table.
"What it is it, Niko?", Alexeiev asked while pouring the crystal clear ethanol-water mix in equally crystal glasses.
"Nothing. Just didn't expect this. But ok. Fine. Lets have a drink.", he responded, still with a dose of suspicion.
"Ok. Lets have a toast. For the oncoming mission and success of the Motherland!", Alexeiev pronounced loudly.
"For the Motherland!", they shouted.

Drinking went on. Alexeiev already took 3 shots, while the two Majors drank carefully, still not being sure what was going on.
Alexeiev took 2 shots more before they all started loosing up.
Soon, even Nikolai took a few fast shots. Only 15-20 minutes later, the staff in the tower could hear them singing and laughing loudly.

"Ex... excuse me for a moment, guys. I need... I need to take a piss, haha!", Alexeiev could barely speak.
The two Majors laughed, when Nikolai noticed Alexeiev droped his wallet just before entering the toilet. Stechin saw it as well, so he stood, picked it up and putt it on the table. A few minutes passed and Alexeiev was still in the bathroom. Stechin was looking at the wallet. At one moment, he reached the wallet and took it.
"What a hell are you doin'? Put that back!", Nikolai protested.
Stechin: "Keep it down! He could hear us. It's not like I'm gonna steal anything. Just curious."

Stechin saw a small family photo, a few credit cards and a strange ID which had an inscription:

"Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation
(Russian: Гла́вное
разве́дывательное управле́ние
Генера́льного шта́ба
Вооружённых Сил Росси́йской
Федера́ции)"

"Colonel Yuri Alexeiev"

"Holy shit! Alexeiev is fricken GRU!", Stechin panicked dropping the wallet.
"Pick it up, he could get in any moment!", Nikolai looked around only to see Alexeiev leaned on the toilet wall with his hands in pockets, smiling mildly.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XI

A particularly unnerving silence filled the office. Alexeiev still kept his sinister smile, while neither Nikolai nor Stechin had the courage to speak. At least at the moment.
"What is it? You look like you're being taken in front of a firing squad in a minute or two.", Alexeiev broke the unpleasant moment, still smiling.
"What's this supposed to mean? Why are we here? You're obviously sober. So you were just fooling around with us. What's all this?", Nikolai broke the ice on their side.
Alexeiev: "It is what it says. You are literate, are you?"
Stechin was a bit drunk: "So all those songs and jokes... That was all false? My jokes weren't that funny?"
"Hahahaha, they were... they were... hilarious... Was that what you expected?",Alexeiev was making a point.
Stechin just looked down.
"What kind of a GRU Colonel keeps his ID in a wallet, for Christs' sake!?", Nikolai asked with a healthy dose of suspicion.
Alexeiev: "The one that gets 'drunk' and 'accidentally' drops his wallet."
Nikolai: "If you wanted us to know, why just not say so?"
"Just say so? So I come and say: 'Sup guys? Hey, you know what? I'm GRU!' You would have laughed to your deaths. This way I got to see your faces when you saw that ID. Oh, boy! You should have seen those looks on your faces! Especially you Stechin. Dropping the wallet and all! Hahaha!", Alexeiev laughed loudly.
The Majors just starred. All this was quite amusing for the GRU Colonel. For them? It was quite shocking. All kinds of thoughts were going through their heads: "What was military version of the old KGB doing here? And what did it want from them? Were they in trouble?" All these questions layed unanswered.
Stechin: "So, what now? What are we even supposed to call you? Major, Colonel? What do you want from us?"
Alexeiev paused for a second and than changed face from a laughing to very serious one: "Out there, I'm still a Major. But here I'm your commanding intelligence officer. And in GRU, you're just privates. Regular military ranks don't have anything to do with GRU ranks, except in some cases. We report directly to the President and sometimes, not even to him. Now what I'm about to say never happened past those doors, unless I say otherwise!
You see, believe it or not, I'm here to recruit your, as far as I'm concerned, completely unadequate, incompetent sorry asses to serve the most secret and important interests of the Motheland. In other words, some, obviously blind, deaf and brain-dead branch executive deemed you as 'intelligence-worthy material'. I protested, of course, but to no avail.
Ok, enough chit-chat. Here's the deal.
The Head of the Board of Executives has some solid proofs that a 'certain General' is a serious liability. Let me give you a hint; it isn't the one commanding the Air-bourne Troops and it isn't the one commanding the Tactical Rocket Forces. I wonder, who it might be? Anyway, I'll leave that to you.
You see, there are two things that can happen. We can win this war or we can lose it. So, in both scenarios, they won't be coming to Moscow unless they want a nuclear Armageddon. In case we win here in Europe, the 'certain General' will try to take over the power immediately and by then he will have hundreds of thousands of troops at his disposal, plus the most advanced weapons that Motherland has. It won't be easy to kill the SOB. But, we can't win this without him, nor we can defend if all this goes bust. Our mission is to be a part of a huge group whose task is to assess the situation and act accordingly. If he's winning, good. We let him do his thing. If he's loosing, we fight together to halt the West. But if he starts winning and doing it fast, we have to be ready to remove him, both militarily, politically and physically if necessary, because he'll use his current power to gain even more power and than, gentlemen, we're screwed, to put it mildly. Hell, we even have indications that he's planning to invade China, 'after we defeat' the West. SOB plans to leave Russia blood-dried."
"Oh, shit! How the fuck did we got into this shit!? This is geopolitics! This is way out of our league, Niko.", Stechin was shocked and upset.
Alexeiev: "Yes! That's exactly what I told the big guys! But they didn't listen. And lets just keep our voices down a bit."
Nikolai: "I suppose all this isn't an offer?"
Alexeiev: "No, unfortunately it isn't."
Stechin: "So what exactly are we supposed to do?"
Alexeiev: "For now, you'll stay here. We need you to do whatever you're assigned to and I'll even overemphasize your role and contribution, if necessary, because at one point, we'll send you to Berlin with all those decorations and medals. He will be impressed and you might end up in those airbases under his command. You might even become somewhat close with him and be a valuable asset to us. Just so you know, these are executives' words, not mine. I mean, I came a bit rough and don't get me wrong, I think you two are great pilots, but I think you just suck at intelligence work. Lets hope you'll prove me wrong, for your sake, for my sake. Hell, maybe even for Motherlands' sake.
Ok, nuff of this patriotic BSing. We have a mission to do in few days. Be ready. You're free to go. And remember well what I've told you."
The two stunned Majors stood up, saluted and went out.
"My Dad was right. So many times he said: 'Victor, my son, whatever you do, don't get into politics and don't ever, ever trash-talk your superiors in front of others, especially when they start it.' And I did exactly that. In front of a fucking GRU Colonel.", Stechin was full of remorse.
"Well, we said we would do anything to get that SOB. I guess we finally got the chance. You know what they say. Be careful what you wish for.", Nikolai noticed.
Stechin: "You know what? All this shit was so much sobering and I seriously need a drink."
"You know, I'm with you on this one. Lets go!", Nikolai responded while patting Stechins' back.

Oh, the plot's really heating up now! They've been drafted into some kind of special unit that's going to act against Aleksandr if necessary. Not going to lie, I didn't expect that plot twist.

Let me give you a hint; it isn't the one commanding the Air-bourne Troops and it isn't the one commanding the Tactical Rocket Forces. I wonder, who it might be?

I actually laughed out loud for real when I read this part.

I was in the middle of writing a part in which there were some airbattles and bombings, when it hit me.
Why would I write a string of constant dogfights, when I can make a story way more interesting in this way. I won't leave the current context (I'm limited by the title), but I'm just gonna build on/expand it. Neither Nikolai nor Stechin will be leaving the Air Force. They just got themselves in a mess, which will (or it should, at least) make the whole story more appealing.
When I started it, I never thought it would go beyond just a few parts, otherwise I wouldn't shoot myself in the foot with the current title.
I'm glad you loved it. smile.gif

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XII

It was just another busy day at Suvorov2. Constant fly-overs by various aircraft and hundreds of engineers with their hands fool of work on repairing and servicing.
At one moment, another well-known and rightfully hated sound was heard from the Early Warning Tower.
"Oh, God, not again! Those fuckin' Euros and Yanks and their damn raids! Why doesn't Zhukov sends just a few of those Topols at them!? Just one or two!", Stechin had a severe hangover from yesterday.
"You know, if you stopped shouting, maybe some of us here could sleep. How about that, Stechin?", Nikolai was barely speaking after his first hangover in the past couple of years.
Stechin: "Oh, stop whinin', Niko! You can't possibly not hate that horrible sound."
Nikolai: "I'm whinin'!? You're the one complaining ever since we got here! Man-up, will ya! And it's almost 8. Get the fuck up!"

The big speakers of the Control Tower soon announced:
"'Yuri Dolgorukiy' is under attack! All available personnel is to proceed to their battle posts. Pilots are to be airborne immediately. This is not a drill!"

Nikolai: "Get up! Let's move!"

Still trying to get dressed, the staff of the base were bumping into eachother. Soon, the two Majors were at the runway.
Alexeiev was standing at his Sokol, shouting at them to get into theirs. Majors compiled. When they got in, the comlink was already on.

"What's goin' on, Col... Alexeiev?", Nikolai barely held his tongue.
"We still don't know. Those aren't airplanes. It's probably some land incursion. Nothing major I hope.", Alexeiev responded with a slight deprecation in his voice over Nikolais' clumsy reference to his GRU rank.
"It certainly isn't a walk in the park, otherwise they wouldn't alarm all of us.", Stechin noticed.
"Alright now. Listen carefully! We should scan the area immediately! It seems that the 'Yuri Dolgorukiy' is under a heavy artillery strike.", Alexeiev gave the order.

Soon, all three of them were airborne. At one moment the Early Warning Outpost stopped sending any of the scan data to the jets.

Nikolai: "They either got the damn Euro artillery or that Outpost is taken out."
A moment later the Control Tower dispatched the message about the Outpost lost to the artillery fire.
"Fuck, we're blind now!", Alexeiev was upset.
"Command, this is Major Yuri Alexeiev speaking. We are in urgent need of air-superiority aircraft! Our Early Warning Outpost was just lost to enemy fire! Respond ASAP!", he added.
"Suvorov2, this is division Command Hannover! We're sending 6 Berkuts to your aid! Good luck out there!", operator dispatched the good news.
"Thank you! We need those badly! Major Alexeiev out!", he responded.
"How long will it take for those Su-47s to get here?", Stechin asked.
Alexeiev: "They'll be here soon enough to save our asses. That's all we need to know now."

The Sokols were scanning a vast area around the bases, but there was still nothing to be found.

"Where the hell are those mortars!?", Stechin was merely being rhetorical.
"Oh, shit! Exactly! Stechin, you're a genius!", it sounded like Nikolai snapped suddenly.
Stechin: "Thanks. I guess. Wait, what did I do exactly?"
"Because those things out there aren't mortars! Damn! Good thinking. Let me check with the base!", Alexeiev added after a moment of thinking.
Nikolai: "Where's the least defended spot at the frontline?"
Alexeiev: "Bocholt. Around 60 km from... Shit! That's where they're firing from. Base, is there any information from Northwestern frontline sector?"
"We have information that the areas near the Dutch border are under attack and a considerable number of US/ECA SpecOp teams possibly infiltrated the region.", dispatcher responded.
Alexeiev: "Could you provide me with any details? More specifically about Bocholt."
Dispatcher: "Give me a minute, Sir."
Stechin: "Will anyone tell me what a hell is going on? Specifically."
He was ignored.
Dispatcher: "Sir, we have very bad news!"
Alexeiev: "Well, spit it out! We haven't got much time!"
Dispatcher: "Our lines have been broken in multiple places along the entire Northwestern sector. And Sir, Bocholt has been overrun half an hour ago."
Nikolai: "Score one for the military intelligence."
Stechin: "Jesus! What are we supposed to do!?
Alexeiev: "Put ourselves together. I can think of only one thing that can fire that far and that's a bit more of a third of it's range. We would be lucky if mortars were firing at us. Come on! Let's move! We can't wait for the Berkuts. God knows how many of those Claymores are firing now. The entire Northwestern Germany is practically at their mercy."
Stechin: "But how are we gonna get them? They must be heavily guarded."
Nikolai: "Let's hope they're not."
Alexeiev: "Base, I want every available engineer to start setting up a new Early Warning Outpost. We might be attacked by a stealth aircraft any moment. And all conscript are to watch closely on any possible intruders. Those sneaky Brits and Yanks might already be in the area."
Nikolai: "I don't get it. How could there be an all-out attack on hundreds of miles of front without us being warned?"
Stechin: "The damn Shock Divisions were probably over-confident. Now we must cleanup their mess."

Three Sokols were moving fast towards the old Dutch border. Alexeiev gave the order to split in order to locate the monstrosities more efficiently.

"My systems detected 3 Claymores! They are 6 km inside Dutch territory.", Stechin informed them.
Alexeiev: "Great job! Let's move!"

Heavy fighting continued over the entire NW sector. This was one of the most massive surprise attacks ever conducted by the Europeans. The Claymores were relatively safe miles behind the ECA frontlines. ECA commanders who planned the operation were obviously confident that it will be a huge success. And they were partially right. Not the best coordination between highly trained and disciplined troops of Generals Zhukov and Orlov and heavy-handed, hot-headed Shock Divisions under the command of General Aleksandr was one of the main reasons for the dire situation in which the once-invincible "western" group of armies was.
What Alexeiev anticipated proved to be true. Only two Gepards and a larger unit of Felins guarded the Claymores.

Alexeiev: "Get ready. Those Gepards aren't the problem. I'm more concerned about so many of those pesky MANPADS-armed Felins."
Nikolai: "Don't worry, Alexeiev. We can do this. We just need a good coordination. Everyone should pick a target closest to himself."
Stechin: "I'll be firing first."
Alexeiev: "No! We'll do it at the same time. We need all the confusion we can create. Get ready!"

A few minutes later, six missiles were fired creating huge explosions close to eachother and completely dazzling the Europeans. A deafening sound of a massive barrage went silent and gave way to short Gepard autocannon bursts and a lot longer sound of frightened Felins in disarray, where only a few were able to lock on and even fewer to fire on the Sokols. How confident the Europeans were about this operation can also be observed in the fact that there was no direct tactical US air support. Although, when the three Majors returned to their base, they saw the results of the more important US strategic bombing. Apparently, unknown number of Nighthawks, presumably 4, managed to drop high-ordnance laser-guided Bunker-busters, three of which heavily damaged the facilities of "Yuri Dolgorukiy" and one of them destroyed the Suvorov2 Helipad and partially damaged the runway. It was still fully operative, thou.

Nikolai: "My God! Look at that crater where the Helipad used to be!"
Stechin: "Sons of bitches! They probably knew about the operation and decided to counterattack!"

The Sokols finally landed. Alexeiev kept quiet.
"You did good there, boys. You did good. This would have been even worse.", he praised the Majors silently.

"Major! Major, Commanders of the 'Yuri Dolgorukiy' asked for our help! They have a lot of casualties and damaged facilities, but the bulk of their forces were already on their way to reinforce the NW sector. They won't be able to send any units to the French border, so the entire operation's called off.", a barely breathing Control Tower operator ran into them.
Alexei: "Ok, send all available personnel to their aid. I want Su-50s refueled and rearmed ASAP!"
Operator nodded and ran back.
Alexeiev turned to the Majors: "Now you two listen! If we get through this, I'll get you those medals and decorations. You deserved them anyway. And two tickets to Berlin. This is it. There's no pulling back from this one!"

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XIII

Despite the general mayhem in which they were, Alexeiev, Nikolai, Stechin and the rest of the staff in the base did their best to keep things running and the GRU Colonel was quite satisfied by the everyones' professional conduct. It was indeed the best they were able to do in this dire situation.

Dispatcher: "Major Alexeiev, the 6 Su-47s sent from the Hanover Command are about to arrive. Should we give them permission to land?"
Alexeiev: "Good. Is that Outpost ready?"
Dispatcher: "No, Sir. Not yet. The engineers will need at least half an hour more."
Alexeiev: "Unless those Berkuts aren't low on fuel, they're the overwatch. Alexeiev out."
Dispatcher: "Yes, Sir! Roger that."

Nikolai: "Those damn Hawks can already be on their way here. Again."
Stechin: "I doubt that. They wouldn't wait so long."
Alexeiev: "You know what those damn Yanks say, 'Hope for the best, plan for the worst'. And they're right.
Lets go. Those Sokols should be ready by now."

The three Majors walked into the hangar. A dozen of technicians were setting up the jets.

"They'll be ready to go in a minute, Major. Just checking if everything's up and running.", one of the technicians reported.
Alexeiev: "Good, good. You guys do your thing and we might just thwart this offensive and avenge our fallen brothers and comrades."
"Yes, Major. Absolutely.", they said almost simultaneously.

In the meantime, 6 Berkuts were arriving. Air-superiority was finally established over the Suvorov2. The three Majors were waiting nervously, while outside of the hangar, a large number of air-base personnel were cleaning up the mess left by the US air attacks. The new Helipad was being setup, slowly but steadily. "Yuri Dolgorukiy", on the other hand, was in much worse shape. Being hit by 3 bunker-busters was a huge problem. The facilities were heavily damaged and it would take days to repair all those destroyed buildings and basic infrastructure. All this was extremely dangerous for Russias' war efforts in this part of the front, because non of the facilities were able to produce the much needed machinery and weapons in the meantime and after the French nuclear bombings there was a severe chronic lack of weaponry and well-equiped troops to fill the ranks. All this lead to a disastrous situation at the frontlines and this particular massive attack in the NW was the last thing Russia needed. Poor coordination between the hated Shock divisions and the regular troops was also a major contributor, but the heroic and often completely self-initiative acts of some of the Commanders made the whole situation less of a disaster.

"These babies are locked and loaded, Major. You just have to hop in.", the leading technician reported.

Alexeiev: "Great. Lets go, boys. We're heading to the northwest. Our plan for the counteroffensive to the French border may be, lets say 'postponed', but we still have a no less important mission to stop this attack."
Nikolai: "Where exactly are we going?"
Alexeiev: "I'll upload the data to both of you via our com-link as soon as we get into the cockpits."
Stechin: "What are we waitin' for, then? Lets get goin'!"

A minute later, they were airborne. The smoke was still seen from the nearby "Yuri Dolgorukiy" base. After Alexeiev uploaded the location it was clear that the target was a large tank column, headed by a Manticore, just outside of Krefeld.

Nikolai: "Shit. They're practically at our door."
Stechin: "If Krefeld falls, Duisburg and Dusseldorf, Essen and finally Dortmund will be jeopardized. This entire con-urbation will turn into a bloody and messy battlefield."
Alexeiev: "Well, that's exactly why we're here. We'll do our best to try to stop it."

This discussion was soon interrupted by the message dispatched to Alexeiev of the need to coordinate their actions with Colonel Mikhail Pogosyan. He was the commanding officer at "Yuri Dolgorukiy".

"Major Yuri Alexeiev speaking. I understand we're working together after all, Colonel.", Alexeiev dispatched the message.
"Lookin' forward to seein' you, Major. And those nasty birds of yours. Especially those birds. I understand two veteran heroes are flyin' with you. Good to know. How you're hanging in there, boys?"
Nikolai: "Thank you for that reference, Sir, but we're all doin' a part here. You're no less famous for your actions, Colonel."
Pogosyan: "Alright, alright. Don't get all sentimental now. Now, how about we make sure that the "Ivan the Terrible" gets a better end than our 'beloved' Emperors' nickname."
Stechin: "We'll do our best, Sir. And really? Which was the genius who named this operation?"
Pogosyan: "Um.. that would be me, Major."
"Oh, shit! Why does this has to happen to me all the time!?", Stechin thought and than tried to apologize: "Oh, I didn't know, Sir! I thought..."
"It's ok, Major. Don't worry about it. My soldiers already gave their opinion. Collectively.", Colonel interrupted Stechin, resulting in a loud laughter by Pogosyans' soldiers on their side of the comlink.
Alexeiev: "I just got a message that the Early Warning Outpost will be ready in a few minutes. Six Berkuts will be coming to our aid. They'll provide air-cover together with those Grumbles in Dortmund and could also take care of light vehicles and large groups of enemy infantry."
Pogosyan: "Even better. You'll soon fly over us. That Manticore is 20 klicks to the south of our position. You try to take it out first, cause those damn nanobots are a real pain in the ass. As soon as we get the reconnaissance data from your onboard computers, we're coming right there."
Alexeiev: "Very well, Sir. Proceeding to the target."
Pogosyan: "Good luck and be careful. Over and out."

The Sokols were flying towards the ECA battlegroup. Soon, their radars spotted multiple targets moving fast to Pogosyans' units.

Stechin: "What are those?"
Nikolai: "I'm getting 6, 7... no 8 Tigers converging on Colonels position!"
Alexeiev: "Damn! There are also two Harriers a couple of klicks behind them!"
Nikolai: "We need to warn the Colonel immediately!"
"Let me try to get those Berkuts here first.", Alexeiev responded and than continued: "Suvorov2, Major Alexeiev speaking. Is that Outpost ready?"
Dispatcher: "Not just yet, Sir. We need a couple of minutes more."
Alexeiev: "Oh, what a hell. Send those Berkuts here. I'm sending you the target data now. By the way, who's leading the squadron?"
Dispatcher: "Some Captain Agatov. He got redeployed from Dresden. On his own request. Can you believe? Who'd be crazy enough for something like that?"
Alexeiev was somewhat angered by the comment so he ignored the rest of the things dispatcher said: "Ok, thank you. Over and out! Idiot."
He continued: "Guess what, guys? An old friend of yours is commanding the 47s."
Stechin: "Really? Which one?"
"Wait and see for yourselves.", Alexeiev responded.
Nikolai: "I got the column! It's 4 klicks to the south. Ah, there you are. I can see the Manticore. You're about to see it. It's the largest on our radars."
Alexeiev: "Let me just warn Pogosyan about those birds coming on his way."

Soon after Alexeiev warned the Colonels unit, he gave the order:
"It's time for a real air-show!"

Nice update smile.gif

Thanks. Since I'm tryin' to push this into cannon, if possible, the Shock Divisions are the bad guys here (please don't use the Tesla gun on me, because, you know, it'd be a kind of an irony for a Serb to be killed by something that another Serb invented, which leaves you with only the rocket rifle (what a relief) tongue.gif biggrin.gif).
So, the story doesn't reflect all of my attitudes and I just wanted to give the Russians as much human face as possible, because they are the "bad guys" here. The whole story does shows them as humans and it's not all that one-sided, but the Shock Divisions are shown as some form of Russian-style SS, although they were probably directly and more straightforwardly inspired by a RL Soviet Shock armies of the WW2. So I can't do much about that (despite Aleksandr being one of my favourite generals).

Posted by: chemisthypnos 5 Dec 2015, 19:17

General Aleksandr is my favorite general. (Probably because his name is said the same way mine is!) I can't wait for the next iteration of this story.

I'll do my best. I have some ideas. I'm glad that people like it. Maybe it's too big for some people (honestly, I didn't expect it'll last this long), but currently, there isn't some big plan. I'm doing this on the run.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XIV

The Su-50s were converging on the Manticores' position.
Alexeiev: "This is it! On my mark, we fire the missiles at the same time. Nikolai you..."
A strange alert interrupted Alexeiev.
Nikolai: "What? What's wrong, Alexeiev?"
Alexeiev: "I can't target the Manticore! It's like there's a fricken blackhole in it's place now!"
Stechin: "The same is with me! What a hell is going on? Are our targeting systems working at all?"
Nikolai: "I can lock-on those Geppards and Leopards, but not the Manticore. Nothing's wrong with the targeting. It's somethin' else."
Stechin: "Oh, shit! I know what it is! Remember what happened in Marseille last year?"
Nikolai: "What happened in Mars... Oh, for fucks' sake! Not again!"
Alexeiev: "What? What's going on?"
"C'mon, Alexeiev. You're a G...", Stechin stopped when he realized that he was about to blow Alexeievs' GRU cover and continued: "You're an experienced pilot. Is it possible you've never encountered these things?"
"Oh, God! These idiots will blow my cover, ruin years of intelligence work, compromise the entire operation and probably get me killed in process!, Alexeiev thought and than responded: "What things? What are you talking about?"
Nikolai: "Anvils! Fucking Anvils! This is how they work. They mess up your targeting!"
Alexeiev: "Shit! I know about Anvils! I just didn't thought they got past the prototype phase. But still, how the hell can they disrupt Sokols' targeting!? That's impossible! It has the best targeting system in the world!"
Stechin: "That's exactly the point! We don't have a slightest clue how does it work! The Euros are keeping at as a highly guarded top secret. We'd need to capture one."
Alexeiev was in a very difficult position now. He had the secret orders to capture any experimental weapon he could, but this was pretty much impossible. Especially considering the fact that the ECA battlegroup was heading towards Pogosyans' troops.
Nikolai: "What a hell are we gonna do? Should we attack the rest of the group?"
Alexeiev: "Just let me think for a moment, guys!"
Nikolai and Stechin kept quiet.
It was a very hard decision. All GRU assets "on the ground" had the same order. Capture ECA high-tech. At any cost, if necessary. Alexeiev knew that the Hanover Command would get the after-mission reports. And Anvils would be at the very heart of the attention. Especially for the GRU department. And if he destroyed it now, he would be responsible for failing to follow the orders coming from the top.
Alexeiev: "Major Yuri Alexeiev speaking. Colonel Pogosyan, do you read me?"
Pogosyan: "I read you, Major. We've got two Grumbles further behind our lines. They'll take care of those Tigers and Harrier. Besides, the Berkuts are on their way here, as we speak."
Alexeiev: "Yes, Sir, but that isn't what I'm trying to say. Sir, we have a serious problem."
Pogosyan: "Well, spit it out. What's wrong?"
Alexeiev: "That Manticore. We can't take it out. It's protected by an Anvil Bot."
Pogosyan: "Shit! Can you take out the Anv... Nevermind. Try to take out as much armour as you can. Leave the Manticore to me. My Sent is more than a match for it. My problem is that we need to get to other parts of the frontline. Our guys are getting pounded by those damn Euros. This just means more of our guys dead in other parts of the front."
Alexeiev: "Yes Sir! You heard the Colonel, guys. Let's move."
Pogosyan wasn't GRU, but he was a high-ranking officer and he had the same orders as Alexeiev did. They were never to talk about it to anyone, thou and this was the first time the experienced, old Colonel was to encounter an Anvil Bot.

As the 3 Su-50s were flying over the unaware ECA battle-group, Nikolai, Stechin and Alexeiev were trying to figure out how to deal as much damage as possible.
There were dozens of armoured vehicles and hundreds of well-equipped infantry below them.
Alexeiev: "We should target only the Leopards, but that will leave us vulnerable to Gepards."
Stechin: "Than how about we wait for Pogosyan to arrive and we fight them together and use the confusion to our advantage?"
Nikolai: "Good idea. But there's one problem. We still have that Manticore and Anvil together. How the hell is Pogosyan to defeat them if he can't fire on them?"
Stechin: "Yeah, you have a point."
Alexeiev: "That's not entirely true. Our targeting data is disabled by that Anvil, but what if we don't need the data at all. We already know where's that Manticore."
Nikolai: "That would work. If our Sokols had any unguided weapons."
Alexeiev: "Who said anything about Sokols? One word, boys. ", he paused for a moment and than continued: "Hinds!"
Stechin: "Damn. Never crossed my mind. Great idea."
Nikolai: "But how far is the closest Hind squadron from here?"
Alexeiev: "Let me take care of that."

"Colonel, can you switch to a secure com-channel?", Alexeiev asked Pogosyan.
"Channel secured. What's the problem, Major?", Pogosyan responded.
Alexeiev: "I've got the order to capture the Anvil, Sir. And I need all the help I can get. I know you have 3 Hinds sitting in your base. We need them here, ASAP."
Pogosyan, unaware of Alexeievs' GRU background was surprised to hear that the Major knew about such a top secret order, but he decided not to react suspiciously: "I see. Well, those Hinds are heavily damaged and unlikely to survive an operation as big as this one."
Alexeiev: "Yes, I'm fully aware of that, Sir, but we need to get that Anvil. And since we can't target it, those Hinds are the only chance we've got. That Helipad should be over by now. All you have to do is give the order and they'll be repaired at Suvorov2 and then be here in less than half an hour."
Pogosyan knew how important was that Anvil, but he had to play it dumb: "But that may leave 'Yuri Dolgorukiy' base without it's last card incase we lose the fight. I would be risking my last line of a serious defensive and offensive potential for this."
Now Alexeiev was unsure what to do. He was considering telling the Colonel some facts, but that could blow his cover. Before he was able to say anything, Pogosyan spoke: "But, if that order came from the top, I guess we'll have to comply it. I'll give the order. Secure channel out."
"Thank you, Sir! I owe you one! Alexeiev out.", the GRU Colonel sighed in relief.

Nikolai and Stechin were keeping the formation, watching the ECA group activity and waiting for Alexeievs' response.

Alexeiev was finally there: "Listen up! Those Hinds will be there in about 30 minutes."
Stechin: "Can we hold on for that long?"
Nikolai: "We better do, because those Tigers and Harriers are about to attack Pogosyan!"
Before Nikolai could finish, two huge rockets buzzed over Pogosyans' Sentinel, continuing further.
"Two Tigers are shot down. The third one's damaged and is about to crash!", one of Pogosyans' soldiers exclaimed.
Pogosyan: "Those S-300s are a blessing. But don't get overconfident, boys. There's still 5 of them more and 2 Harriers behind as well. I want those Tunguskas locked and loaded!"

"Wo-fuckin'-ho! You wanna fuck around with our VKO?! Come on! We're just getting started!", Stechin was excited.
Nikolai: "That was fucking awesome! I'll never stop being amazed by those damn Grumbles!"
Alexeiev: "Don't forget that those Berkuts are about to arrive in... "

"This is Kutuzov1 Squadron reporting! I understand you're in need of some assistance, Major.", Berkut commander interrupted Alexeiev.

Nikolai: "Wait! I know that voice!"
Stechin: "Me too! Damn! Agatov?! Is that you!?"
"Yes, Sir! As a matter of fact, I am.", Berkut commander confirmed his identity.
"It's bloody good to hear from you again, comrade!", Stechin continued.
Agatov: "I will gladly catch up with both you and Major Shoigu later, Sir. But now, we need to get those Harriers converging on Colonel Pogosyans' position."
Alexeiev: "Absolutely, Captain! Continue with your mission. I'm sure you'll get plenty of time later with both of them."
Agatov: "Yes, Sir. Agatov out."

They could see the traces of shells being spit from Berkuts targeting the 2 Harriers. The cumbersome European jets were struggling to avoid the 6 Berkuts cannon bursts, while deploying chaff countermeasures to brake missile locks. While this unequal dogfight between the multirole European and purpose-built air-superiority Russian jets was happening, the Pogosyans' Tunguskas were taking care of Tiger gunships.
The mission was running smoothly for Pogosyan so far.
After the Harriers were unable to lose the Berkut squadron, their pilots decided to cause as much damage they could. They turned to Pogosyans' land troops. One Harrier broke off the chase and managed to fire on the Kodiaks and BMPs loaded with infantry. The Kodiaks were heavily armoured and took the hit quite well, but the BMPs were struck hard. After the first BMP exploded, Berkuts finally shot down the Harrier which was, thanks to the pilots' last-ditch kamikaze effort, crashed very close to a group of BMPs, damaging them to an extent. The other Harrier wasn't that lucky and it exploded to bits in sky after being hit by two Berkut AA missiles. The rest of the Tigers were finished off by the remaining Berkuts and Tunguskas.

Pogosyan was upset because he lost that BMP, but he knew that the entire situation would've been worse if the three Majors didn't warn him and those Berkuts didn't show up.

Alexeiev: "Are everyone ok, Sir!? Do you have casualties?"
Pogosyan: "SOBs took one BMP out and I have a couple of wounded in the other one, but we're pretty much fine."

Nikolai: "Alexeiev, those Hinds are about to arrive."

Alexeiev: "Sir, is your group ready to move. Hinds are about to show up."
Pogosyan: "That was faster than I thought. Ok. Lets get that damn Manticore!"
Alexeiev: "Damn right, Sir! Nikolai, Stechin! Lets pick those Leopards one by one, until Colonel Pogosyans' troops get in range."
"Yes, Major. Lets do this!", Stechin exclaimed.

Nice choice biggrin.gif

Well, they're the only ones with unguided AGMs and powerful enough to blast a Manticore.
Note: They were damaged, but got repaired at the Suvorov2 Helipad.
So, even more OP. biggrin.gif tongue.gif

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XV

Sokols were circling above the ECA battlegroup. Colonel Pogosyans' unit was heading towards the enemy. Soon, 3 Hind heavy gunships were spotted on Alexeievs' radar.

Alexeiev: "Alright, everyone, listen up! We're still not firing, until the Colonel engages the Euros directly. We'll take out those damn Leopards easily, but the Geppards are the pain in the ass. So we should be very careful. Plus, those Fels have MANPADSes. We'll engage the targets from the outside. We can't attack them when we're right above, they'll grind us in a sec. I repeat, DO NOT engage until Colonel gets here first!"

"We got it, Alexeiev.", Nikolai and Stechin confirmed almost simultaneously.

They started moving away until all 3 of them were at a safe distance from most of the Geppards. Manticore was in the centre with the Anvil behind it. Pogosyan ordered a small detachment to start a flanking maneuver in order to surprise the Europeans. This smaller group had the task to engage the European left flank just after the main force starts to engage the ECA battle group frontally. Nikolai, Stechin and Alexeiev were to start picking the Leopards one by one, while the Hinds were tasked to arrive last and destroy the Manticore, leaving only the Anvil.

While circling around, the three Majors were able to see what was going on.
In one moment, ECA group was starting to spread out, which resulted in them covering more ground. That made it more complicated to target and destroy their tanks and it could have compromised the small Russian flanking detachment moving on their left, although the Europeans were unaware they were being outflanked.

Alexeiev: "Comrade Colonel, I think we have a problem. They started spreading out. A dozen of Geppards are moving behind, while the Leopards are in a horseshoe formation."

Pogosyan: "Don't worry, Major. We got it covered. Thanks for the warning, anyway. Pogosyan out."

Alexeiev was still unsure. He was concerned that the entire operation would fail, while the real problem was the fact that Pogosyan had to commit a relatively large group to deter a smaller, but powerful enough, ECA group, while arguably more pressing concerns had to be addressed in almost the entire length of the Northwestern Front.

Despite the danger, the small Russian group, which was code-named "The Sickle" in the meantime, managed to slip by the ECA battle group and awaited further instructions.
Pogosyan was moving carefully with the main force, which was also named in the meantime. Predictably enough, it was code-named "The Hammer".

"All callsigns, get ready. Let 'The Hammer' hit 'The Anvil'!", Pogosyan gave the order.
A dozen of Kodiak heavy tanks were advancing frontally, with a large group of BMPs in the second line. The Sentinel was just behind the BMPs. Tunguskas were in the last line.

ECA group stopped moving. Leopards had a greater range, so they already engaged the advancing Kodiaks, but the advanced Russian armor made up for their lack of range. Some of Kodiaks stopped and fired Refleks ATGMs from a far.

This was a sign for the Sokols. Nikolai fired his missiles first. Stechin and Alexeiev soon followed. "The Sickle" group finally engaged the European left flank. Geppards were still busy fighting the Russian ground troops. Pogosyan than decided to send in the Hinds. All 3 of the monstrosities soon appeared on the horizon. Panic soon struck many of the Felin troopers, so they soon started moving closer to the Manticore. Sokols were still firing from above.

"Shit, our guys are getting torn apart down there!", Captain Andrews was upset.

"There's nothing we can do for them now. Let's just keep doing what we're supposed to do and get a hell out of here as soon as possible!", Captain McGregor responded grudgingly with a strong Scottish accent.

USMC Sniper, Captain Andrews and Royal Marines Sniper, Captain McGregor were tasked to make a routine sniper patrol along the front. They were positioned in a forested hill overlooking the plain where the battle between Russian and ECA armor was raging. The US Army was still not engaged in open land warfare with the battle-hardened Russian ground troops, but they were sending numerous SpecOp groups ever since America entered the war. Europeans were already used to loosing many troops to the Russians and they knew that many more sacrifices were to be made in order to have a chance to defeat the Russians. Americans on the other hand weren't used to fighting a military which was at worst on par with theirs. Decades of fighting various terrorist groups and invading smaller unsubordinate nations left the US troops quite unprepared for taking heavy casualties against the very powerful enemies with serious offensive capabilities. The Europeans learned this the hard way, and Americans were about to see it as well, although there wasn't really an easy way to learn it.

In the meantime, Nikolai, Stechin and Alexeiev were running out of ammunition, and the battle was going well for Russian troops. Soon, only a dozen of Felins and a platoon of Combat Pioneers surrounding the Manticore were all that was left from the ECA battle group. Three Hinds already started firing their rockets at the Manticore. It was hard to target the exceptionally large tank due to Anvil behind it. Colonel Pogosyan decided to move forward and draw Manticores' fire with his Sentinel.

"We can take more shots, but that doesn't mean you should screw around, Chernayev!", Pogosyan dispatched the message to the leading Hind pilot, Captain Chernayev.

"I'm doing my best, Sir! This SOB is a tough nut to crack!", Hind Captain responded.

Indeed, nanobot technology made it exceptionaly hard to kill what was already a heavily armed and armored vehicle. And the Anvil Bot made it all even worse.

"Move, move! Don't let it get a clear shot!", Pogosyan yelled to his Sentinels' driver who was struggling to maneuver the titan, while Pioneers' mortar shells falling around didn't help much, as well.

"The Manticores' threads are collapsing! Fire, before nanobots repair it!", Captain Chernayev yelled.

All three Hinds soon fired a full barrage which resulted in an unexpectedly massive explosion. The Manticore was finally destroyed. The remaining Felins were still firing at the massive Sentinel tank, while Combat Pioneers placed a number of anti-tank mines around the Anvil.

"They know what we're trying to do! Kill those pioneers before they activate the mines!", Pogosyan ordered.

Hinds started mowing down the remaining ECA infantry.
Soon, only a few Felins were all that was left.

"Everyone, cease fire! I repeat, cease fire immediately!", Pogosyan gave the order, connected to the loud speaker and turned his attention to the Felins: "This is Colonel Mikhail Pogosyan speaking. Your fight is over! Your commanders can be proud, because you showed exceptional courage today and you earned your enemies' respect. Now, I call you to employ reason and surrender. I give my word as an officer of the glorious Russian Army that if you lay down your arms and surrender, we will treat you honorably and in accordance with all the established protocols of the Geneva Convention!"

The Felins were still unsure, but soon they started throwing down their weapons.

Pogosyan ordered a few Conscripts to capture the prisoners, defuse the mines and secure the Anvil Bot.

While all this was happening, Captain Andrews and Captain McGregor were watching carefully. McGregor decided they can't let an Anvil fall into Russian hands. He readied his AW50 heavy anti-material sniper rifle.
He was about to shoot, when Andrews stopped him: "What a hell are you doing!? Our guys are still out there! They'll kill 'em all if we shoot!"
"Step aside, kid! Do you have a slightest clue how many of our guys are gonna die if we let Russians capture that Anvil!?", McGregor answered angrily.
"What you're gonna do about it than!? Kill 'em all with one .50 cal!?", Andrews tried to play it smart.
"Ha, you really are a kid! One shot is all it takes. Did you even saw that anti-tank mines around the Anvil!?", McGregor was being cynical.
Andrews: "But, but... what about those Felins!?"
McGregor: "Do you think I like doing this!? Fuck you! You don't know shit about what we've been through! Now stop this BS, take your rifle and help me with this!"
Andrews stopped for a second and soon realized that cheap moralizing wasn't going to help anything. He took his customized M40A5 sniper rifle and got prone right next to McGregor.

Alexeiev was very pleased how things went thus far. He was about to achieve what no other GRU asset ever got the chance. About five or six Conscripts were approaching the Felins and the Anvil. Suddenly, a huge explosion sent the Anvil in the air, killing the Felins and Conscripts.
Initial shock soon gave way to rage on Russian part.

"Whaaat!? What a fuck happened!", Pogosyan raged.
He wanted to know what happened: "Chernayev! Did you see who activated the mines!?"
"No, Sir! It just went boom!", Hind commander was equally astonished.

Nikolai: "What a hell happened!?"

Stechin: "Who activated the damn mines!?"

Alexeiev was furious: "Shit, shit, shit! Dammit all! That's it! I'm done!"

Pogosyan gave the order for everyone to get back to base. They were about to get ready for another mission at the frontline. The Sokols returned to the base, while Hinds provided air cover to the retreating Army units.

Nikolai: "Fuck! All this trouble for nothing!"

Stechin: "What happened out there?"

Alexeiev still kept quiet. Both Nikolai and Stechin soon realized it was better to do the same.

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 25 Feb 2016, 18:47

Thank you. smile.gif
I can't really tell you how it turns out, but it's not just because I'd ruin the story, but also because not even I know it. I'm doin' all this on the run.

Posted by: z741 25 Feb 2016, 20:34

I get that, i'm not saying spoil the story. I'm saying keep writing it. It's a very good read. Do you plan to release this story as a PDF if it's made canon?

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 25 Feb 2016, 22:37

I never thought about it, honestly. But now you've mentioned it, it would be a good idea.
Do you plan to save it? Is it that good? tongue.gif

Posted by: z741 26 Feb 2016, 3:30

I would say yes, I plan to have ALL lore stories (canon and fanon) so I can enjoy some good reads.

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 26 Feb 2016, 15:33

Ok. No problem. As soon as I finish this, I'll attach it here in PDF.

Posted by: z741 26 Feb 2016, 18:31

I feel all lore stories (canon of course) should be compiled into a PDF so it can be read like a book. You, MARS, and Svea should collaborate to make it so as you three seem to have the best stories.

It's nice to have lore to go with the mod.

Posted by: z741 26 Feb 2016, 18:33

Also, too bad Mobile Air Bases (Helicarrier from Avengers like) weren't canon. I could probably write a kickass story regarding one or even a group of them.

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 26 Feb 2016, 18:47

MARS, Svea and me? Damn, it's an honour to be mentioned with the two giants of the lore. Thank you very much. smile.gif

I have read a lot of books in my life. I am actually a big fan of the Ryanverse. I do know good authors and storytellers when I see them.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XVI

Nikolai and Stechin were waiting in front of Alexeiev's office. The enraged Alexeiev was trying to file a report for the Head of the Hanover Command GRU Department, which he referred to only as "Volk" ("Wolf" in English).
Alexeiev's frenzy was occasionally interrupted only by the sound of braking and him running amok. Even his favourite cup fell to his rage.
Precisely this situation was something both Nikolai and Stechin were hoping to avoid. Still, the rules were to followed.
Stechin knocked the office-turned-warzone door reluctantly.
"Whaaat!?", Alexeiev blistered on the other side.
Stechin's mimics pointed out it was Nikolai's turn.
"Um, Sir, Major Shoigu and Major Stechin reporting.", Nikolai tried to act as if nothing happened.
Alexeiev immediately realized Nikolai's intention, which only enraged him even more, although anything else would have derailed him in that particular moment, nonetheless.
"Don't try to play it dumb on me! Get the fuck in!", GRU Colonel responded angrily.
"Close the damn door!", he continued when Stechin walked in right after Nikolai.
Paranoid Alexeiev walking aimlessly reminded them of days in Dortmund, when the then Colonel was always furious, making both of them feel like they were always doing something wrong. And just when they thought all that was behind them, it was there, again.
"I had it! Right there, in my hands! And I let it slip! We all let it slip!", Alexeiev went completely berserk now, throwing anything he'd lay his hands on.
Stechin knew it was his turn again: "Calm down, Colonel. What's the point of all this now?"
"Don't tell me to fucking calm down! Tomorrow is the deadline for the final report of our investigation! Ah, shit! Ok, tell me what did you find out.", Alexeiev was still raging, but soon started putting himself together.
Nikolai: "We searched the area the best we could. It's a warzone out there, Alexeiev. It isn't easy to have a forensic investigation in the middle of a frontline. We scanned the sight for days. We had an inquiry with hundreds of our guys. Even Colonel Pogosyan was interviewed. And all that, while trying to maintain the secrecy of the entire "Anvil" operation. We are not 100 % sure, but we think it was either one of the Felins who took the shot, or someone else, possibly a lone sniper from a far safe position. Anyway, it wasn't anyone on our side."
Alexeiev: "I know that, but those fuckin' pencil pushers from Hanover Department will demand much more than what we think. Ah, crap! What's done is done. The deadline is tomorrow. Give me the documentation. I'll file the report and try to make it look as good as possible."
Stechin: "Here you go, Sir. It's all there. Nikolai took the liberty of listing all the names in alphabetical order, so you wouldn't need to do it."
Alexeiev : "Ok. Good. That would be all."
Nikolai and Stechin stood up, saluted and were about to leave when Alexeiev stopped them: "Wait! Look, guys, we all had our share of this bullshit and I just want you to know I appreciate your efforts. It wasn't easy to handle it all."
Nikolai: "Thank you, Alexeiev."
Stechin nodded.
"Alright, don't get all sentimental on me, now! Get out of my sight.", Alexeiev smiled mildly to show he wasn't serious about that last line.
Both Majors felt relief. They expected it to be far worse, but it turned out better than they anticipated.
They soon got back to their regular duties.
During lunchtime, everyone saw the reports of various Russian news agencies about the "cowardly act of Europeans , when they fired on a squad of Conscripts, after announcing their surrender and than set off an anti-tank mine, which resulted in even more deaths of our comrades".

Captain Pedro Gutierrez was checking his Harriers' cockpit, while listening to the news cast: "... while trying to brake through the encirclement, our brave soldiers were slaughtered by the barbarous Russian killers, contrary to all the laws and civilized traditions of warfare established more than a century ago in Geneva. According to our trusted sources, the remaining Felins were summarily executed, despite some of them surrendering to the enemy. If there is any consolation in it, we would like to note that one of our brave men managed to set off an explosive device and kill an entire squad of Russians, thus bravely giving his life for our noble cause. In other news..."
"I can't listen to this propaganda bullshit!", Captain Gutierrez promptly switched the channel.
"Since when do you hate our own 'propaganda', Gutierrez?", Captain Johan Schmitt asked cynicaly, but also curiously at the same time.
"Ah, Schmitt. I figured you'd say something along those lines. Anyway, what can I do for you?", Pedro responded
Schmitt: "You haven't answered my question, Gutierrez."
Pedro: "Ok. Do you seriously believe anything fabricated by war propaganda? I'm pretty sure the Russians have their own 'heroic' version of recent events."
Schmitt: "I see. Is there a reason for us to doubt your resolve? Do you still believe in our cause?"
Pedro: "For 'us'? Since when do you refer to yourself as 'us'? Do not ever try to question my resolve again, Johan! Have I made myself clear!?"
"We have a briefing in 5. See to it that you be there. And this time, don't be late!", Schmitt answered while still smiling cynicaly.
Gutierrez ignored the last line.
Schmitt soon left.
The Spanish pilot, who had the reputation of questioning everything, had a profound rivalry with the by-the-book German pilot. Schmitt was an experienced pilot who was one of the few left from the old Luftwaffe. Having lost many of his friends and fellow pilots, the once unusually joyful German became grumpy and bitter, with a particulary cynical life perspective.

A few more weeks passed since the "Anvil" operation. The prospects of Russia retaining the region were increasingly grim. And it didn't went unnoticed by Suvorov2 personnel. The air was heavy. An unusual discomfort was felt in every corner of the airbase.
Nikolai and Stechin were heading to Alexeiev's office.
"Come in.", Alexeiev responded after he heard the knocking.
"Sit down.", he said and than continued: "So, we have no time to waste. I have some news. Whether they're good or bad, that's entirely your perspective."
"You're getting a promotion?", Stechin tried to be sarcastic.
Alexeiev: "Yeah, very funny. Now listen carefully. This is serious."
"Ok, ok. Sorry. Carry on.", Stechin tried to look interested.
Alexeiev: "Suvorov2 is closing down. The Command made a decision. An all-out strategic retreat. We can't hold so much territory with the current forces."
Nikolai: "Damn, I expected it to happen sooner or later, but just not that soon."
Alexeiev: "We'll have one more mission before the retreat. There's a Deployment Zone established a few klicks southwest of Luxembourg. We need to take it out. Otherwise, they'll jeopardize our retreat. We need to do this right. When all this shit reaches Berlin, we'll need everything and everyone we can get. Also, the damn Euros and Yanks should know we're not running away. They should realize we'll come back sooner or later."
Stechin: "When do we leave?"
Alexeiev: "Tomorrow. We'll have a briefing tonight. Be here in 7 pm. That would be all."

"Captain Gutierrez! You're late! Again.", Schmitt reprimanded Pedro in front of others.
"I don't see the Colonel. It seems you came too early, Schmitt.", Pedro responded, which caused laughter and giggling among others.
Schmitt tried to argue, when a tall, red-haired man in his forties entered the briefing room. Colonel Patrick O'Brian was the commanding officer of the newly established "William the Conqueror" Airbase/Deployment Zone. It was one of the first continental airbases established after the war started. After the Russians evacuated from France and parts of western Germany, the ECA High Command felt secure enough to allow the establishment of new airbases outside of safe areas in Iberian Peninsula and British Isles.
"Good afternoon, gentlemen! As you all know, we have implications that the Russians are starting a big defensive operation, which leads us to only one conclusion. They're retreating.", Colonel O'Brian started the briefing, but was soon interrupted by the hot-headed war-hawks.
"We should smash them! We should wait no longer! It's now or never! God knows when we'll get an opportunity like this!", one of them shouted.
"With all due respect to my older and more experienced colleagues, do I have to remind you of your rank? So, please keep your voice down. Thank you.", the Irish Colonel was determined.
The Colonel than proceeded with the briefing: "As I said, the Russians are not running away like rabbits, although we would all like to see it happen. This is a major and well-organized operation and we should not take it lightly. When they get to Berlin, most of Germany will be liberated, but Berlin will be so fortified, that we'll need months, maybe even more to brake through, and that's without counting any new weapons and supplies they'll get from Russia. We will definitely try to take advantage of this retreat and hit them where it hurts the most, but don't expect miracles to happen anytime soon. I've uploaded the data. It will be available as soon as this briefing is over. That would be all, gentlemen. You will be duly noted when the next meeting will take place."
Colonel O'Brian left the office, while the remaining officers started a heated debate over what would be a better decision.

It was almost 7 pm. Nikolai and Stechin headed for Alexeievs' office. After getting in, Alexeiev offered them tea.
He than got straight to the point: "This operation will be very dangerous. In fact, we wouldn't be doing this, if we didn't have an asset in this new Euro airbase."
Nikolai: "Are you serious? An asset? Can we trust him? How could you possibly know he won't betray us?"
"Don't worry. He's reliable enough.", Alexeiev reassured them.
"What do you mean by that!? 'Reliable enough' will get us killed. We need to be 100 % sure!", Stechin was also astonished.
"But we are. I assure you. We got it covered.", Alexeiev insisted and than continued: "Now let me finish. He will disable any stealth-detectors in the area, we get in, bomb the shit out of them and go back. Then, we all go to Berlin. Everyone live happily ever after. Except for the Euros, of course. Simple as that."
The Majors didn't feel any better. Alexeiev made it all look like if it was a walk in the park, but both Nikolai and Stechin knew the reality was way different.

Good job. I liked the description of what an Anvil's jamming feels like to someone on the targeting end, as well as the attempt to capture one for study. Nice description of the tank battle too and how each of the unit types played a role in that battle. It seems the US is only committing special forces and air power to the war in Europe for now. Not sending in their main ground forces yet, although probably they will soon. Trying to gauge the Russians' capabilities first since in the RotR-verse the Russians have more war experience than the US (which has been isolationist for 20-30 years.)

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 3 Mar 2016, 12:45

Thanks, smile.gif
Well, according to the lore, the US has already landed on the shores of southern and northern France and Benelux countries, but IIRC they aren't engaged directly with the Russians. I think it's the old US tactics of bombing the enemy first and than committing land troops. And I think that just bombing the Russians is a lot more difficult than bombing other adversaries. I just think it wouldn't be contrary to lore to show the Americans acting carefully when it comes to ground operations (as they really are IRL), especially after decades of isolation you've mentioned.

Story of Major Nikolai Shoigu
PART XVII

The crowded Russian airbase was in a state of near-chaos. The evacuation was being carried out in such a rush, that to many, it looked like they were running away.

Stechin and Nikolai were preparing for the mission. Alexeiev told them to be ready by 9 PM, because the mission was to be carried out during night.

Stechin: "This waiting is killing me! And that damn 'asset' in Euro airbase? I mean c'mon. I know we have some pretty great special services, but how can Alexeiev be sure the 'asset' won't sell us out?"
Nikolai: "Calm down. I have my doubts as well. But Alexeiev isn't a freaken GRU Colonel for nothin'. He always provided us with good info. I think, or at least I hope he's right. If they have this 'asset' in the Euro Deployment Zone, than they probably have a good reason to trust him."
Stechin: "I guess you have a point. I wonder who is he? That is, if it's 'him' at all?"
Nikolai: "I have no idea. Ok. Lets have some sleep. We have some serious work to do tonight."
Stechin stood up and was about to go to his room, when he stopped and asked the already sleepy Nikolai: "Hey, what's going on with you and that Valentina chick? Did you buy her a drink?"
"Go to sleep, Stechin.", Nikolai was being direct.
"Ok, ok. I know it's non of my business. I was just asking, as only a real friend would do.", Stechin was 'worried' sarcastically.
Nikolai just gave him a stern look. Stechin just walked away, giggling quietly.

The mission was supposed to start in a few hours, but neither Stechin, nor Nikolai could sleep. The noise the airbase staff was making became unbearable, while the regular pre-mission anxiety didn't help either. Alexeiev didn't sleep at all. He was walking in circles in his room, while sitting down and going through plans occasionally, despite the fact that he already did it times and times over. He may have reassured Nikolai and Stechin, but there was no-one to reassure him. He was on his own. This was normal for a man of his caliber and profession. No break, no rest. And he was always the responsible one. No matter how ridiculously unrelated to him the problem was, it was still his problem. He had to take the responsibility for his men's actions, he had to file reports to his superiors about the missions, all the time. Simply, he had the unpleasant job of constantly balancing between his power-hungry bosses and his always curious associates. Alexeiev was an experienced intelligence officer, not even too old, but the work started to take it's toll bit by bit. Too many sleepless nights, too much coffee and lastly, the chronic insomnia were all becoming heavier and heavier. Alexeiev took a deep breath. He sat down in his chair, finally falling asleep.

It was 8:30 PM. Stechin was the first one to wake up. He was the one who slept the most. At times, his mild simplemindness was a real blessing. While Nikolai and Alexeiev were always worried, Stechin would worry just at first, but then he would just shrug it off, realizing there isn't much that he could do.

Lieutenant Santiago Perez, a young Spanish pilot, whose deployment to "William the Conqueror" was his very first, was still nervous, but also very eager to contribute to ECA the best he could. Although not passing all the criteria for an ECAF pilot, the shortage of manpower gave him a chance to fulfill his childhood dreams. Captain Gutierrez was checking on the newly arrived personnel.
Perez saluted his superior officer eagerly: "Sir, Lieutenant Santiago Perez, Royal Spanish Air Force, reporting for duty!"
Pedro saluted back and responded: "At ease, Lieutenant.", and then proclaimed loudly so everyone could hear: "One thing while you can still listen. Forget about your national Air Force! Spanish, British, French, Italian, I don't care. You are now officially serving as the pilots of the European Continental Air Force! Have I made myself clear!?"
"Yes, Sir!", they proclaimed simultaneously.
"Good! Get back to your duties!", Gutierrez responded.
Santiago approached the Captain, asking for a permission to speak freely, only to be promptly interrupted by Captain Gutierrez: "Not now, Lieutenant. I have some things to take care of."
Perez felt bad, but he still had to follow orders.
Soon, Captain Johan Schmitt showed up as well. Everyone saluted him.
He saluted back and then asked: "I can see you already met Captain Gutierrez. Where did he go?"
Lieutenant Perez tried to answer, but was instead cutoff by someone else: "I overheard him say something about checking on the Mobile Sensor Arrays around the base, Sir."
"Ok. Good. Get back to your duties.", Schmitt responded.
Perez was dumbfounded as he didn't hear anything about MSA check.

Captain Schmitt soon arrived to the first MSA, but Gutierrez already left to the other MSA site. Soon, Schmitt finally caught up with Gutierrez.
"You are needed at the briefing room, Pedro. I'll take care of those MSAs.", Schmitt informed Pedro.
"What? Now? Why wasn't I informed earlier?", Pedro responded.
"It probably has something to do with your headset being turned off.", Schmitt remarked sarcastically, while pointing to Pedro's headset.
"Ah, shit! I used the part of my headset for the first MSA. We had some problem. Ok. You think you can handle this one?", Gutierrez responded.
"Just go. Don't worry. I got it covered.", Schmitt reassured Pedro.
"Ok. Thanks. See you later.", Pedro soon left, surprised by Johan's unusual friendly attitude.

Nikolai and Alexeiev soon woke up too. Alexeiev called everyone to the hangar.
Alexeiev: "How's it goin', boys? Had any sleep?"
Nikolai just nodded, Stechin confirmed, barely managing not to yawn.
"Ok, our Sokols are ready. Get in those cockpits! I've uploaded the data. The asset confirmed that the mission is a go."

Both Majors were in the cockpits now, while Alexeiev soon followed. A mix of anxiety and eagerness overwhelmed them all, including the GRU Colonel. The Su-50s took off from the Suvorov2 for the last time. They had orders to go straight to Berlin as soon as the mission was over. Alexeiev became strangely attached to the airbase. He led it for so long, through it's best and it's worst. He rebuilt it from the ashes again and again. Nikolai and Stechin also got used to it fast. Although not nearly as secure as their old base, here at least they had a feeling they were making some difference. Plus, they got involved in a highly-secret GRU operation, which could affect the very outcome of this war and thus, the fate of the world to an extent. It was hard, it was very dangerous, but it was the highest point in their carriers and lives for that matter.

The jets were moving towards the ECA airbase fast. Alexeiev was looking at his radar all the time. There was no stealth-detection alert, as promised by the "asset" in the ECA base.
"You see. We're already in range of any decent MSA, but there's no alert. There's nothing to worry about.", Alexeiev tried to reassure his comrades.
"Why can't I see any Wotans on my AESA?", Nikolai remarked.
Alexeiev: "I don't know. They should have been there."
Stechin: "Didn't you say the informant gave you data on the exact location of MSAs, Wotans and other Euro assets?"
Alexeiev: "He did, but... This isn't right."
Nikolai: "What are we supposed to..."
Suddenly, imminent detection alarms went off in all of the jets.
Alexeiev: "Shit! They're onto us! Try to shoot on anything you can! Let's get the fuck outta here! Now!"
Stechin: "An asset in a Euro base, my ass! We're fuckin' dead now!"
Nikolai: "No time for arguments now! Let's try to get to Berlin in one piece! Stechin, do you see the MSA southwest of your position? Get it, so you and Alexeiev can lose the MSA's stealth-detection radar!"
Stechin: "Confirmed! I'm on it!"
Stechin fired two missiles per volley, destroying the MSA and damaging one of the Wotans. Nikolai, however, was still in the reach of MSA, so the remaining Wotans started targeting him. Alexeiev and Stechin were relatively unharmed, but Nikolai was in a lot of trouble.
"Nikolai! Can you hear me!? Nikolai!", Stechin shouted.
Before Nikolai was able to respond, another Wotan targeted Nikolai's Su-50. Almost immediately, the jet started turning into a flying fireball. Nikolai had no other choice but to eject, before all the systems were destroyed by the unbearable heat, which also could have knocked him unconscious.
Alexeiev: "Punch out! Nikolai, punch out now!"
There was no response. Communication equipment was faltering, because the Wotan's beams didn't just ignite the aircraft, but also caused a serious disruption to all other systems.
Nikolai knew that pulling the ejection lever triggers a sharp and dramatic transition from a noisy, dangerous cockpit to the sudden peace of floating back down to Earth in a parachute - and he also knew how incredibly jarring it is. He deccelerated, but knew he still had to face wind blasts - 800, 900 miles per hour at the very least, if he was to eject. Plus, an exploding aircraft all around him wouldn't help much, either. Also, ejection seats are not powered by rockets alone. The rockets are not sufficient in the process of igniting, powering up, to get a man out of the cockpit in time. What works is an explosive charge. Nothing except a small piece of dynamite or explosive underneath the pilot would get the seat up, out and moving fast enough for the rockets even to engage. Shortly after entering a programmed turn to the right in a 35-degree bank, an unstart occurred on the right side. The aircraft immediately rolled further right and started to pitch up. With the control stick as far left and forward as it would go and no response from the airplane, Nikolai knew he was in for a wild ride. The G forces built up so rapidly that Nikolai's words came out garbled and unintelligible, as he was barely able to speak or move. The ejection lever never felt so heavy. The cumulative effects of malfunctions combined with reduced stability, higher angle of attack in the turn, speed, altitude, etc., resulted in forces being imposed on the aircraft that exceeded the restoring abilities of the flight controls and Stability
Augmentation System. Although everything seemed to be happening in slow motion, it was all just a matter of 10 to 15 seconds. Nikolai blacked out from the extremely high G forces. His next recollection was thinking that he was having a bad dream and hoping that he would just wake up and get out of that mess. As he began to regain consciousness, he realized that it was not a dream and that it's all really happening. That was extremely disturbing to him, as he became convinced that he could not have survived what had happened, so he thought he must be dead. He was thinking that, since he didn't feel bad - kind of a detached, euphoric feeling - being dead wasn't so bad after all. He became fully conscious and realized he was not dead and had somehow become separated from the airplane. He had no idea how this could have happened, because he did not intentionally activate the ejection system. He could feel he was falling and could hear the rushing of air and what sounded like straps flapping in the wind, but could not see anything because his pressure suit face plate had frozen over and he was looking out through a layer of ice. The pressure suit was inflated so he knew that the emergency oxygen supply in the seat kit attached to his parachute harness was still functioning. This was of critical importance because it not only supplies oxygen for breathing, but also for pressurization of the suit which prevents the blood from boiling at the altitude and speed he was experiencing. After Nikolai was finally safe from the fireball in which his Sokol turned to and started falling, his parachute activated automatically and he fell unconscious again. Although he experienced it all before, every time in this kind of situation was no different than the first time. In fact, this time it was far worse. You could never possibly get used to it.

Captain Andrews and Captain McGregor were on a regular patrol. Andrews was scanning the area with his night-vision goggles, when an enormous fireball came falling from the sky. The extreme noise and a loud bang not far from their position almost knocked down the sleepy Captain McGregor.
"Holy shit! What the fuck was that thing!?", Andrews was shocked.
"Glakit Cunt! That was a fuckin' fast mover down!", McGregor remarked.
Andrews: "Shit! It could have killed us! Let's go there! Maybe it was one of ours!"
McGregor: "Are you insane, ya crazy Yank!? We don't even know if it's ours. There could be a whole search-party of Russkies out there, for all I know!"
Andrews ignored McGregor and started running towards the rising smoke.
"Wait! Where do you think you're goin', Andrews!? Bollocks! Those damn Yanks and their superhero syndrome!", McGregor exclaimed and started running after Andrews.
He caught up with the careless American and finally stopped him: "Are you trying to get us killed!? Are you!? Listen to me, you crazy fuck! You can't just go there! We can check what happened, but we'll go around! If it's one of ours, we'll see if we can help the poor bastard, but if it's Russian, consider our position as being compromised. Is that clear!?
The dumbfounded Andrews nodded.
McGregor: "Ok. Now put your shit back together and lets move!"
Andrews stood up and followed the grumpy Scottish Captain.

Nikolai finally regained consciousness, only to find out he was in the middle of a forest, partially covered by his parachute. It was almost dawn, but the forest was dark. He barely stood up. He tried to walk, but he never felt so weak. He sat on the ground trying to recollect what happened. He removed his helmet and the pressurized suit. The transponder was damaged, so he couldn't call for help. He had a PP2000 and a small survival kit, but that wasn't enough for getting out of the woods in one piece, especially without anyone knowing his whereabouts. He managed to escape when he was shot down over Netherlands a few years back, but he had his transponder on at the time. This, however, was different. He was unconscious the entire time after he ejected, felt very tired and disoriented. He took the small personal computer out of his pocket and connected to the GLONASS. The computer showed a 3D map of the area in which he was. He realized he was deep behind enemy lines. His only hope was to find fast transport, because just walking in such a hostile environment was out of question. He didn't had to wait long to find out how hostile it really was, because a pack of wolves came from the forest and soon started running towards his position. Nikolai took his PP2000 machine pistol, but he knew that just a single shot could uncover his position if there were any ECA soldiers in the vicinity. Just when he raised the gun to fire, a loud shot was heard from the distance. The wolves scattered back to the forest quickly, but as soon as he tried to run another shot hit the dirt in front of him. He realized he was in the scopes, so he dropped his PP2000 and raised his hands. It wasn't long before two masked snipers approached his position carefully.
"Don't you fuckin' move!", Captain McGregor threatened in his strong Scottish accent.
"Get on your knees! Restrain him!", he added and gave the order to Captain Andrews.
Andrews approached and grabbed Nikolai. Nikolai knew he should comply if he was to get out of there alive, but he also knew he shouldn't let them trap him, so he decided to play along for starters.
"Base, this is Captain McGregor speaking. We have the tango in custody. We need an exfill ASAP. I'm sending you the coordinates now!", McGregor informed his superiors.
"Extraction on the way. ETA, 6 minutes. We're sending you the LZ coordinates now.", operator responded.
McGregor: "Roger that, Command. Over and out."
Andrews: "Damn, just when I thought this day couldn't get better. We're gettin' a ride home. And all that because of this guy."
McGregor turned to Nikolai: "Get up! What's wrong? Oh, don't be sad! We're taking you to a nice 5-star hotel."
Nikolai was quiet. He complied and moved in front of McGregor and Andrews. They soon got to the LZ. It was just a few minutes before a Blackhawk helicopter landed in the clear high ground surrounded by forest. Just when Nikolai was being pushed towards the helicopter, McGregor took his rifle and hit Nikolai in the back of his head. It was an immediate blackout for Nikolai. The third one in a matter of hours.

This was so great. I did not expect him to get shot down. I love how this series has so many twists and turns. You never know what is coming next. If only Russian pilots could find the eject in- game! XD

Thank you! smile.gif
I had a plan to get Nikolai in some interesting situation, because there isn't much more fun in describing (and reading, I guess tongue.gif) the same dogfighting/bombing missions over and over again. There will be more surprises in the future. wink.gif

Glad to hear it. Keep up the great work.

Is this story still going? I really like the idea and the execution of the plot, and hope that the author might find time to continue this! No pressure though. <3

Wow! It's been ages since I wrote that. I had the plot for the next couple of parts ready, but then my old phone died and I lost the draft. I remember most of my plans, but I've been so busy in the last 3 years. I can't make any promises, but I might continue the story at some point.
BTW, thank you! I'm glad you like the story. biggrin.gif

I have been Reading this Fanon too laugh.gif
Really great Story and I love both sides had some fair share of good Characters with their own personalities. Now that makes me wonder if this can be like a mini Campaign of sort, but that would be a lot of coding I guess and its probably most of the missions using only the Protagonists Aircrafts then sometimes a classic mission gameplay for battles like the ECA Offensive with the Manticore Battlegroup

Thank you very much. I'm glad you like it. Unfortunately, I lack the skills to turn this into a real mini-Campaign, but if anyone thinks it's worth it and they have time to do it, they have my blessing to do so. biggrin.gif
