As of the upcoming Patch 1.851, the GLA will have access to a third Mercenary unit. Available as early as Tier 0, the Runner is the most lightweight and cheapest of the three Mercenary types. His primary armament is a machete which is now exclusive to him and allows him to close in quickly with enemy infantry in order to deliver a killing blow. Alternatively, he can switch to a reliable pump-action shotgun for up-close engagements, making him an excellent close quarters combatant.


Not only does the Mercenary Gunner now come in three different visual variants, but his functionality has also been modified: His ability to dig a foxhole has been removed and replaced in favour of a more straightforward stance switch, allowing him to change between walking stance and prone stance. When prone, the Gunner will receive a damage resistance boost and fire his machine gun without interruption as opposed to the bursts he would fire when standing. When ordered to go prone, the Gunner retains his ability to move, albeit at a slow crawling pace, so altering back to walking stance is advised when it comes to taking the fight forward.

Very simple fact that nobody would want to use the much more expansive gunner and grenadier mercs to do knife charges.
these cheap and more disposable guy should change that.

I like idea of third mercenary unit,I love idea of it having shotgun,
but giving machete to it as a primary weapon and removing it from other two just for sake of forcing player of using it is plain silly,
I am pretty sure player would immediately upon producing of those units switch to shotgun,and use machete ability mostly if unit
gets overrun so it can bail from trouble.

As for updating of machine-gunner,well...I personally loved their dug in ability,but I admit new one seems lot more practical.
Dug in seems more of a ECAs thing.

Oh and yes...Visual variants of both look great,Runner with a hat is my fav so far.

working 8 hours on a customized animation set for a machete charging mad man and then realizing nobody uses it ingame because the units are to expansive to use as charging cannon fodder is alot more silly.
the only reason you ever legitimately wanted to the machete charge in a competitive game would be to get them out of trouble.

Still,shotguns due to their effects and sounds in ROTR are far more tempting for use than any of melee attacks imo.

Btw,I though Merc Grenadiers already had variants,one of them wearing sunglasses,even at night...Other without them.

Nobody?? I use it a lot. It makes them greatly fast, I use it when I want to move my mercs quickly. That's a useful option for me

I always thought of a dedicated unit as the Runner for the GLA; will be interesting to see a battle between a group of Runners and Attack Dogs early in the game. tongue.gif

Assuming that they can be camouflaged like the other mercenaries, you can have a roving band of invisible machete wielders who only appear at the last possible second...

Also useful if your opponent has plenty of anti-vehicle weapons, but is light on anti-infantry (which can happen from time to time).

If runners are cheaper (which I would expect) and move faster (also probable) you might find that they make for a better early anti-infantry unit.

It would be really nice to have a mirror GLA match and the only thing you can train are rebels that can only use molotovs and merc runners that can only use the machete.

Actually if ROTR would have infantry only game mode that would be awesome,
ROTR overall has some really awesome infantry units,but unfortunately they are mostly inferior to what their vehicle and aircraft
counterparts can do (especially to them),like in every other C&C game...And that is a plain shame...
I would vote for infantry only game mode over arena any time any day.

Except, they can't use the stealth when holding a machete. Even upgrade the camouflage.

I dont think giving the runners stealth would make them overpowered. It would at least make them usable.

I'd imagine slapping a tank with a knife isnt going to go too well, but a visible anti infantry infantry even if very fast is miles behind a single toxin tractor or a quad.

The only effective use i can see for them is harassing gla supplies or denying the barracks expansions early on, but as soon as a single gatt or a quad shows up its adios amigos. Which is why letting them benefit from the camo upgrade is essential to keeping them useful past that point in the game.

As opposed to throwing machettes sniping airplanes? mindfuck.gif No shottie needed imho. The machette is an exceptional anti infantry weapon and adding a second one is simply redundant. Besides it would take away from the whole "crazy guyz with machettez" thing.

A welcome change for the gunner though. Clunkiness begone!

Just a few thoughts on the update i wanted to share.

EDIT: Welp looks like i missed that the runners get camo benefits with shotguns on. And this will be enough to make sure that they will be on shotgun mode once they have camo researched. Which makes the original problem rear its ugly head again.

My opinion: no shotguns, stealth machettes.

The partisan is dedicated anti stealth with added anti infantry capabilities as extra.

Maybe the shotgun should come with the Arm the Mob upgrade, but that would need a second set of models.

Based on the available info its very easy to do. If we take how do all the other mercs perform with machettes on and if we assume that these will be no different, then take into account that these will be t0 with appropriate training costs and time its safe to assume that they will be fairly inexpensive and therefore easily fielded early in the game. Which makes them cheap fast infantry who 1 shots the other infantry, almost like ECA dogs. Now if we assume the shotgun is more or less like the one vanguard uses, that makes it a high dps weapon vs infantry which makes the machette irrelevant simply because they can shred infantry in groups because they can present more firepower at once from range AND they are stealthed when using shotguns.

Yeah its all speculation, but im assuming again that sharing opinions on things and their performance beats "OMG ME SO HYPE WHEN RELEIS" posts which are simply useless and annoying.
