SWR Productions Forum _ Frontline News _ 1.86 Development Update VIII

Posted by: The_Hunter 22 Aug 2015, 16:22

Hello everyone, we're back again with another update for ROTR development.

The Russian Kodiak has received an additional model to add a bit of visual variety for your large tank divisions.

GLA fighters revel in the irony of American warplanes being shot down by their own anti-air missile systems. The FIM-92 Stinger, acquired by the GLA through their extensive black market connections, remains one of the most effective anti-air weapons even though it is almost a century old. Stinger soldiers are usually grouped in three at specific locations, nicknamed 'stinger sites', where hostile aircraft traverse often. Lately however these sites have become easier for bombers to target and destroy, resulting in the mobile Ural trucks transporting stinger soldiers between locations, and even the soldiers themselves hiding among the foliage and striking when the aircraft pilot least expects it. Because of their large Stinger launcher they can't carry any secondary weapon heavier than a personal defense weapon, most commonly a pistol.

Holy! That's some cool Kodiak you got there mr, Hunter! biggrin.gif

Very nice new Kodiak model Hunter!! It looks more modern like a real Leopard counter.

Posted by: X1Destroy 22 Aug 2015, 18:13

I know this is just a build variant of the ingame unit, but are they different tanks lore wise?

I would assume that Russia would hastily upgrade some of their other, older tanks in reserve once the Americans showed up and pushed them into service alongside the mainstream Kodiaks.

Posted by: X1Destroy 22 Aug 2015, 18:41

Maybe. But I think this one is much more modern and advanced compared to the usual modified T-80UM. Possibly upgraded T-90 variants.

Posted by: Mr.Kim 22 Aug 2015, 18:45

Seems pretty much inspire with T-72 or 80 tank. Nice addition anyway.

Posted by: The_Hunter 22 Aug 2015, 20:19

Actualy it's losely based of a T90 turret.
It's not 100% accurate but that wasn't the intention to begin with

Posted by: 3rdShockArmy 22 Aug 2015, 20:59

Those Kodiaks are absolutely beautiful.
So, Stinger soldiers are basically GLA Igla troopers? Is their performance any different?

I can yes:

They look better in game. They also remind me of Ukrainian derivatives of Soviet tanks.

Posted by: M.P 23 Aug 2015, 0:51

Cool o.o

Posted by: RikerZZZ 23 Aug 2015, 1:32

Its looking good smile.gif
Does this mean more variations for Russia (and potentially others)? :3

Posted by: M.P 23 Aug 2015, 10:33

Well if tier 0 vehicles get variants it would be cool o.o

Maybe a third Kodiak but other than that its unlikely.

Variants need to have a (very) similar silhouette for things to work right and altho this is pretty easy with something as a main battle tank based on any Russian T72, T80 or T90 its not so easy with others.

Posted by: SoraZ 23 Aug 2015, 11:29

It would also suggest that the more elite Russian army just throws whatever it can at the enemy in the same way the Chinese and GLA do rather than have a standardised, high-quality armoury.

Posted by: re_simeone 23 Aug 2015, 12:04

It is also kind a realistic, since Russia irl uses thousands of MBTs,all of them being combined T-72s,T80s,T-90s,etc...

Posted by: Die Hindenburg 23 Aug 2015, 12:34

I find the stinger guy a bit too much, with these powerful aa units the gla already have.
Also the tank variants are a bit too much effort put in for such a small effect.

Posted by: X1Destroy 23 Aug 2015, 12:58

Well the Kodiak is an upgrade program for the vast existing Russian tanks since the 80s, 90s era and not a new vehicle made from scratch. It is perfectly reasonable for it to have different variants.

The other vehicles are not like that. Golems and Sentinels for example are completely new vehicles.

The Golem is based on Object-279, a Soviet tank from the 50s.

Posted by: X1Destroy 23 Aug 2015, 13:26

It is but it wasn't an upgrade applied directly on the ancient cold war vehicles. It was made from scratch, only the design of Object 279 was used as a base.

The original prototype never entered mass production to begin with.

Posted by: Svea Rike 23 Aug 2015, 13:37

But it sill isn't a completely new vehicle; that would imply the base is a totally original design.

Posted by: SoraZ 23 Aug 2015, 14:31

The Golem is an original design since the Objekt 279 is a unique tank made war-ready by Aleksandr and then mass-produced while the Kodiak consists of a bunch of different T-whathaveyous slapped with the same umbrella name and upgraded in whatever ways required to make them all perform the same despite originally being completely different tanks. This is the same case like with the Scorpion, Battlemaster, Gattling Tank etc, since these are all very different vehicles that still are similar enough to be grouped under their respective umbrella name and get outfitted with whatever tech is needed to make them perform very similar. As an analogue, this would be like taking a bunch of Abrams, Challengers and Leopards, then outfit them all with similar tech to make them all perform basicly the same and give them a new umbrella name like "Guardian" or something.

I would assume so.

The variant thing becomes increasingly lame, there are already enough, it not too many variations for units. Whats the purpose even?
What i really fear is that will be a even larger overload in units and features for 2.0. ....shudders.....

The Kodiak is usually in large numbers, meaning a bit of visual variety won't make it seem too the same.

As always, brilliant stuff wink.gif

Posted by: Kazan 14 Oct 2015, 7:16

i think it is gratuitous to give Russia, a specialist in tank divisions, a horde varient cluster of tanks. I mean they are supposed to be more professional atleast as far as the tanks are concerned.

I'd suggest, don't give Russia the 'tank variants option' like the gla and chinese (as we already have the reserve tank drop ability to cash on the 'older' variants of the Russian tanks arsenal). Instead make all the Kodiaks same and uniform with the new camo (or a better camo if you can come up with). THat will retain the Russian image of a more professional army as compared to the ad hoc Chinese and the gla army that they are.

that said, this new camo is AWESOME!! biggrin.gif

I'm shocked. People complaining about a mod, that they are no paying for, having more content and variety? I call this madness...
