SWR Productions Forum _ The Box _ what anime do you like?

Posted by: blowthebullet 15 Jun 2009, 3:34

hello there people of SWR,

What for anime are you following and/or seen and want it to share with the community

For example:
1. make a list for yourself like a top 5.
2. A opinion about the best anime that you have seen.

top5
My list of good anime are:
- Death Note (probably the best i ever see)
- Code Geass
- Naruto
- Chrono Crusade
- Lucky Star

Best anime
The best anime is of course DeathNote tongue.gif, with the draw-style and the story it's just perfect, people that like plots-twisting must see this anime wink.gif (cannot better and has a great but sad end in it).

PS: yeah, i know that i have a avatar of naruto but that means not for me that naruto is the best anime.

Posted by: Overdose 15 Jun 2009, 4:48

Top5:
All of Macross
Hellsing Ultimate
Kara no Kyokai
Rurouni no Kenshin
Record of the Lodoss War

Favorite: Difficult. Probably Macross Zero or Macross Plus or Macross: Do You Remember Love. I'm expecting the Macross Frontier movie to be my new favorite though.

I'm currently watching Lucky Star and liking it a lot. Its freaking hilarious.

Nice. I'd add in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star in there. Banner of the Stars, Samurai Champloo and Berserk get honorable mentions.

I've seen a few episodes of Hellsing and Samurai Champloo with my mates. It wasn't bad but I can't say that I'm really into it.

Everyone eventually gets assimilated. You just have to find a series you call your own first. Since you are a fan of 80 and 90s action flicks I recommend watching Black Lagoon or Gunsmith Cats.

Hmm...top five would be orderless, since there's not much you can do if you're a fan 8Ip.png, but...yea, if you've watched a buncha anime already it gets impossible to induce favoritism 8I.gif

- Shakugan no Shana
- K-ON
- Macross 7 (They should make this 3D like Frontier did.)
- Lucky Star
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Best...ah, this is impossible to judge.

Black Lagoon is a must watch. Its also has the only dub I'd ever watch.

In no particular order:
Black Lagoon
Ergo Proxy
Claymore
Most Miyazaki films
Samurai Shamploo
Elfin Leid
Gyku Manga Biyori (Gag Manga Everyday)
Azumanga Daioh
Wolf's Rain
Cowboy Beebop
Monster
12 Kingdoms
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Panic
Hellsing
Kenshin
Deathnote
FLCL

Prolly plenty others I can't remember at the moment (though non of them are Bleach or Naruto, I loathe never-ending series's)

Quoted For Truth.

In fact, in some instances (most of which consist of Revi speaking Japanglish) I can't stand the Japanese audio. The english dub is actually better than the JP audio in very many aspects. (Though for the most part, both are superb)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Eva is simply a very well-done stereotypical mech anime with a mix of psychotic mind-fuckery. The last ep was kinda what made me dislike it, because it was all like: 'weird shit happens and everybody dies. Oh, I almost forgot, more weird shit happens."

Though I did enjoy the very many instances of giant pseudo-organic robots ripping other pseudo-organic robot's guts out. That was mildly entertaining. Also giant lasers.

The gore in ep 1 of Elfin Lied was kinda what got me into the show. Though I did kinda cringe when that lady got her head ripped off.

Black Lagoon is wonderful in so many ways (and I'm very glad that season 3 is on the way). Roberta is prolly most bad-ass Maid character every. Umbrella-Shotgun and Kevlar Machine gun Suitcase are like the coolest weapons ever. All from the aptly named episode 'Maid to Kill'.

The 'giant laser which requires all of Japan to power' was pretty awesome. Even though it's pretty well completely impossible tongue.gif

Even then that was early in the series before the writers all lost the will to live or whatever...

Roberta and her huge rifle. It puts Seras' Harkonnen to shame.

umm.... what?

Seras's Harkonnen II is basically two tank cannons carried by a person. Though I personally dislike Seras' for simply being the boobs bouncying around the room and failing to be the comic relief, her gun is A Beast.

Although, I guess sometimes, she is serious business.

Roberta though, in the comic and the show, is serious business, All, The, Time. (when her Spanish Theme kicks in the the show, you know she's gonna start to pwn everyone in the vicinity).

Posted by: DerKrieger 18 Jun 2009, 1:37

Roberta's rifle is a real weapon you know...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrett_M82. It's basically a BFG rifle that fires .50 in (12.7mm) thick cartridges that were originally designed (back in the 1920's) to take out tanks and aircraft. To make things even more ridiculous there's a grenade launcher (possibly a South African made MGL-140) of some sorts underneath the barrel! There appears to be no scope on the rifle, though...I'm don't think the M82 even has iron sights (thus making firing such a weapon sans scope with any accuracy an impossibility).

Posted by: Overdose 18 Jun 2009, 2:07

Roberta is what throws most of the show's realism out of the window.

Eh, not really. Anime is basically Japanese animated drawings, while cartoons are more American/international animated drawings.

Cartoons are generally geared towards kids, while anime is basically the whole spectrum.

In anime you can get something as deep in story and loosely based in reality like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_(manga) or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_of_the_Fireflies

You can have some serious mind-fucks with stuff like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruhi_Suzumiya, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergo_proxy or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Experiments_Lain

You could also have some ultra-violent stuff like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellsing, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfen_Lied, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood:_The_Last_Vampire

Also some incredibly awesome shit like Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Beebop, Black Lagoon and Kenshin which can't be categorized in any other way besides awesome.

You can have some more mainstream kids stuff like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece.

Or some incredibly cute stuff like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamtaro or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chi%27s_Sweet_Home

And then there's hentai and ecchi, which I won't go into.

So yeah, anime is far more broad and for all ages while cartoons are much more specific. Keep in mind that for some reason or another, Japan has more anime than it has Live-Action films (I'm pretty sure of this statistic), thus there's a very wide range of shows. Sometimes, Live actors can't have the expressiveness of an animated character.

Posted by: Overdose 18 Jun 2009, 23:06

That is correct.

Yeah, no. Anime in Japanese simply means animation, thus Anime is Japanese animations, however nowadays it also refers to the style of Japanese animations. Cartoons doesn't just mean an animation, it is also more of a style. I would not call "The Lion King" a cartoon, it's correct category is 'animated feature' or 'animated film'. I'm kinda tired explaining this to you, so I'll just copy paste the definition of Animated Cartoons from Wikipedia:

QUOTE
An animated cartoon is a short, hand-drawn (or made with computers to look similar to something hand-drawn) film for the cinema, television or computer screen, featuring some kind of story or plot (even if it is a very short one). This is distinct from the term "animation" or "animated film", as not all follow the definition.

Seriously, if you look at any of those anime links I posted, and then go compare them to something like Tom & Jerry, Power Puff Girls, or something, and you can't differenciate the two, then there's no point in me explaining this.

Posted by: Alias 19 Jun 2009, 11:55

If you're going to pull the Dictionary card, you're going to lose.

According to the brilliant source of knowledge, the http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/cartoon?view=uk English dictionary, a cartoon is:

QUOTE
cartoon

noun
1 a drawing executed in an exaggerated style for humorous or satirical effect.
2 (also cartoon strip) a narrative sequence of humorous drawings with captions in a comic, newspaper, or magazine.
3 a film made from a sequence of drawings, using animation techniques to give the appearance of movement.
4 a full-size drawing made as a preliminary design for a painting or other work of art.
Don't tell me anime isn't a sequence of drawings giving the illusion of motion because it is. Since it is, it is therefore a 'cartoon'.

tl;dr: anime is a cartoon by definition

Anime are just the name used for Japanese cartoons to diferenciate them from westen cartoons

Its like mangas are japanese comics but are called diferently to know they are from japan, nothing more

The only reason anime has a more broad spectrum of audience compared to the generic westen cartoon its simple because in the west cartoons are looked as something for children, why in japan they have genres of cartoons for all ages

I personally much rather trust a definition dictated by the people than by a bunch of profs at Oxford. For instance, the Oxford dictionary dosen't even have the word 'google' defined, which I find laughable; Dictionary.com has multiple entries for it. Language is a fluid entity, in which the meaning of words are constantly changing and ultimately defined by how they're used in colloquial conversations. I also find it degrading to call a piece like Mulan or Nausica a cartoon.

Anyhow, this thread has has meandered away from the original topic.

Has anyone here ever watched 12 Kingdoms (Juuni Kokki)? It's a wonderful series based partially in Chinese mythology and Taoism, has a fairly deep story and mutiple main characters. Sadly, it was cut short from it's intended 80 episodes down to 45. It's one of my fav series, but it's kinda sad that they never finished it.

My fav character is Raku (The Giant Rat in the image above). Probably the best only giant talking rat character I know.

There's also a http://www3.rocketbbs.com/401/12kirin.html to get the show back again. Heh, those'll never work but I signed it anyways.

Here's the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twelve_Kingdoms

I highly recommend it, if you have nothing to watch right now you should go get it (or nab it online).

Both Dictionary.com and Wiktionary say a very similar thing to what Oxford says.
QUOTE (Wiktionary)
4. (animation) An animated piece of film
QUOTE (Dictionary.com)
3. --> ANIMATED CARTOON
a motion picture consisting of a sequence of drawings, each so slightly different that when filmed and run through a projector the figures seem to move.

There's a difference between fact and opinion.
It is a fact that anime is a cartoon, whether you obey the definition is an opinion, however Nergized tried to say the definition was that anime aren't cartoons, and was factually incorrect.

I will not start a flame-war now. I did not mean only you as your person yourself aka Alias alone either, I meant everyone. And just to add, definitions are likely to change when a better way to define something is found. And even though I do not like it, your definition is right. Enough said.

I adore the Claymore Manga. I forgive the anime because the anime development caught up to the manga and they had to make some random shit up in order to end the show.

Kinda hope they would redo the entire thing when the manga is truely finished, though I think that's an empty dream. I especially want a remake, 'cause the the first anime Raki was a useless 'pet' that Clare dragged around. It's only in the latter half of the manga does he become a youguai-killing, awakened-being-babysitting, large-sword-weilding, Mc-Badass Burger with a side of chips.

I dunno, I like ultra-serious-business animes like Claymore, are there any more action series like that? Not like Hellsing, where's hyper-serious one moment and insipid high-larious moment the next. (Something like Ergo Proxy, or The Monster, but with more fighting. No, not Naruto or Bleach).

Posted by: KamuiK 3 Jul 2009, 14:30

I have no idea if you could count it an ultra-serious action anime, but have you tried 'Burst Angel'?

Posted by: Destiny 3 Jul 2009, 17:02

I think I've seen Noir before (watched an ep or two, then deleted the entire series out of disinterest), I just animenfo'd MADLAX and that seems like a nifty show; I'll definitely give that a shot.

Heh, Burst Angel, I'll give that a try too. I8.gif

Currently I'm also watching Michiko to Tactchin (which is ok, but has a certain Cowboy Bebopo vide to it), Noein (which is some weird trans-dimensional mindfuck), and Licensed By Royal (which I currently think is crap, but I'll give it a chance before complete obliteration). I'm also re-watching 12 Kokuki (12 Kingdoms), which is basically 45 eps of aweome.

Personally I don't think I can get through any of those series, they will most likely be deleted before I can get through half.

By the way, by 'serious' I also mean stuff like Black Lagoon, and Cowboy Bebop, where they do add humor, but it's not stupid Chibi-ified metally disabled humor.

Dragon Balls series for me. It was good old or the best anime show in 80's or 1990's back in Korea.

Also Black Lagoon, too. I8.gif. I tried buy Black Lagoon season 2, but Vol.2 was missing. I guess wait for it.

I actually forgot about zoids, *slaps self*

as for me, the only anime i really watch is the Gundam series (well, the UC ones as in Char, Amuro, ect)

I am currently watching 'Zero No Tsukaima' Season 3 Princess no Rondo, 4 more episodes to go + OVA (anyone have a link for that OVA?). After that I will watch Da Capo I think.

Posted by: NergiZed 11 Jul 2009, 7:47

Well, I just watched a show called 'Eden of the East'. I dunno, I think I'd call it interesting for sure, but I'm not totally sure I liked it. I kinda skimmed through it (which is what I do to series's I'm not sure I like), but I got the basic premise down. Basically there's this dude called 'Mr.Outsider' and he's supposed to be some I'm-somehow-above-the-government type of person. Anywho, he picked 12 people and gave each of them a special cellphone and told them: "Here's 10 billion yen, go save Japan from decay. Oh, here's a bunch of rules: if you spend all your money, you die; if you use the money for your own purposes, you die; if you fail to save the country; you die; if someone else saves the country before you, you die. The only way to live is to save the country first. Oh, you also can't spend the money directly, you have to call the lady in the cellphone to spend it for you. However, the organization can do anything; as long as it's humanly possible, it'll be done. Now go and be a good Messiah and save Japan" Nobody knows who the other 'Messiahs' are, but have access to all the 'purchases' made with the magic cellphone. Also one of the Messiahs is responsible as an 'enforcer' of sorts and killing any Messiah that's breaking the rules (though apparently, only Mr. Outsider, not even the enforce him/herself, knows that that's their job).

Yeah, pretty weird stuff. (Though I've seen weirder)

The main character stumbles upon one of these cell phones. (actually, all the 'Messiahs' stumble upon their cells). Anywho, warbleflyff ensues. Some terrorist attack happens, there's some memory wipe thing, some dude streaks in front of the White house waving a gun around, and some other crap happens.

I dunno, too much conspiracy theory stuff, to many random random rules and it's a weird show. BUT, I did watch it till the end, which is something I don't normally do for shows I'm not sure I like or not.

This probably won't ever get licensed since it's so weird and totally not for the American audience.

Still not sure I liked it, but it's not whole keeping on my drive.

Well, it's interesting, if weird games and conspiracy theories and 'stupid rules are everywhere' game type of scenarios are your thing, than you should give it a go. (Also, it's only 12 eps, so it's short)

Posted by: Destiny 11 Jul 2009, 12:05

Eden of the East is epic. No kidding, it really is. The first episodes were hilarious, the protagonist had to show his johnny quite a few times 8Ip.png

I sorta predicted how it'll end...when I read that one of the Numbers would launch 60 Tomahawk missiles, I immediately thought of Takizawa getting Patriots and jazz.

Hm, Eden of the East huh? I think I will give that a shot. Any info of how many seasons there are and (if any) how many OVAs?

1 Season, 12 eps.

Not gonna be mind-blowingly awesome, but you probably haven't seen anything else like it, and it does have a rather interesting (if not sometimes weird) premise.

I got the OST too for no apparent reason. I would direct you to BakaBT.com, and if that fails for you, just google it.

But sadly, I don't think I can watch that show again. I personally hated the Main character. That lady and her 'minions' were awesome, but that stupid just would not shut up.

So, over the last few days I finally watched both seasons of Black Lagoon. For the last few months a friend of mine had been telling me to go out and watch it; he insisted that it would be right up my alley. Even when I protested that I hardly ever buy DVDs of tv series I've never seen, he simply responded by questioning my manhood and threatening me with bodily harm. After watching it, let me tell you that the only regret is that I hadn't done so sooner.

Black Lagoon has everything you would look for in a bad action movie; swearing, kung fu, machine guns, chainsaws, high explosives, babes with firearms, Ex-VDV Russian gangsters, Nazis, beer, sunglasses, rocket launchers, PT boats, muscle cars, and a ruthless killing machine posing as a maid named Roberta (don't question it). It's really difficult to go wrong when you have this kind of formula, but the super-badassery of the main characters and sheer over-the-topness of it all make everything even that much more awesome.

I'd even say it's the quite possibly the best anime I'd ever seen, even better than Cowboy Bebop. Yes, I just went there.

Posted by: KamuiK 4 Aug 2009, 14:38

Actually I am watching Black Cat, and for me it has everything it needs to be a cool anime: a great main character, a serious background story, a killer loli (^^) amongst other things.

I was never bothered to watch Black Lagoon though.

It's a downright brilliant show and you should all watch it.

Finshed School Rumble ( the TV series anyways)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Originally a manga, the anime adaptation is superb and the English dub is pretty well done.

Posted by: RaiDK 30 Aug 2009, 9:23

Watching Transformers: Headmasters.

It's pretty well exactly what you'd expect from a late 80s Transformers show made in Japan. And it's awesome.

TRANSFORM-DASH!

Did I forget to say I want a 2nd Season of Elfenlied?
Actually no, I am not THAT insane I8.gif8I.gif. Actually, I want more of Record of Lodoss War - Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (ROLW-COTHK for short I8.gif8I.gif).

Posted by: ultimentra 11 Sep 2009, 1:36

My favorites:

Ghost in The Shell Stand Alone Complex (and the 2nd season as well)
Full Metal Alchemist
Black Lagoon
Gundam 00
Claymore

My hate list:
Naruto
Fruits Basket
Death Note
DBZ

I personally think that Death Note is incredibly over rated, I will admit it has a unique story and good character development, but the plot just doesn't seem attractive to me. Everyone thinks its the best thing ever when they have never watched a single episode of Ghost in the Shell. Probably because they are too stupid to understand it. (I am talking about the fangirls of course).

Posted by: NergiZed 11 Sep 2009, 15:32

Whilst I'm rather neutral about Death Note, if it didn't exist, this wouldn't have happened:

Me too...did the author stop writing the books or did the series just get over played? BTW, I'm still waiting for that Outlaw Star sequel...

Posted by: Paul McCartney 12 Sep 2009, 10:20

Death Note was an incredibly suspenseful series, however a lot of the logic it used really was WAT material. The last episode's 'huge revelation' in particular was incredibly weak.

Posted by: KamuiK 12 Sep 2009, 14:24

As most people probably have read on my sig, I am watching Chobits atm. Also, I kind of want a 2nd season of Lucky Star I8.gif8I.gif

Who doesn't want a 2nd season of LS? Well the Disappearance arc disappeared...there's only LS left...not counting the others I8.gif

Posted by: KamuiK 12 Sep 2009, 15:43

Speaking of Haruhi 2nd, how many episodes are out now?

Posted by: Destiny 12 Sep 2009, 19:07

14, it just ended yesterday/two days ago.

Posted by: KamuiK 12 Sep 2009, 19:38

Was it not supposed to have 28 this time?

Posted by: Destiny 12 Sep 2009, 21:13

Apparently not. I've not heard of a season three of Haruhi, but it might be likely since everyone wants to see a blushing Yuki the Disappearance arc is pretty deep.

...I hope an episode 15 appears next week. 8Ip.png If not...yeah, too bad.

Posted by: KamuiK 13 Sep 2009, 0:44

Well, AFAIK season 2 is planned with 28 episodes, but as you said, we will see what happens.

Posted by: Balizk 2 Oct 2009, 2:46

In order:

Full Metal Alchemist
Code Geass
Death Note
One Piece (watching it now, episode 230 lol)
Gundam Seed
Gundam 00
Claymore

And it's all the animes that I watched (I liked all of them)

Posted by: KamuiK 2 Oct 2009, 13:27

I watched Prism Ark these days, the basic story was good, but some of the animation was too exaggerated and the ending, like with most stories these days actually, just sucked.

Posted by: Destiny 2 Oct 2009, 16:35

The last episode should've been near the beginning, it all doesn't make sense. For me I guess the ecchi and character design is enough I8.gif
