SWR Productions Forum _ Hecthor Doomhammer Streaming Service _ Feedback, critisism and questions

Did I screw up in commentary somewhere and I didn't notice? Have you got tips on how to improve the quality of my streams or commentary?
Or do you just want to commend me on doing an awesome job?
Then this is the place to do it. Rise of the Reds only of course.

What Emin96, I think, means a stream with you playing the game not sitting on the side lines

Posted by: Composite armour 12 Apr 2014, 3:02

Would it be possible to set up a 5 player all USA FFA for this sunday?
Dedicated to Bruce of course.

Posted by: XAttus 12 Apr 2014, 8:52

Bruce has quit... :V

Besides, mirror matches (games where all players have the same faction) are boring in my opinion.

Posted by: ★ Dylan 12 Apr 2014, 11:19

I have a request please :-

How about a 5 player USA VS ECA VS GLA VS China Vs Russia FFA? We would be able to see the full power of all factions and how they even interact with each other. Thoughts ?

Doubt it'll happen, until the devs want to go and explain the nitty gritty, where unit voice lines are also meant to be heard.
I am most happiest with just observing and commentating. It's what I dobest.

I'll pass this message on to the testers team, I can't guarrantee it'll happen, but perhaps a 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 could.

Sometimes, but wach player has his own unique way of playing a certain faction. Just look, for instance, at the difference between Buce and Seraphinexx.

So far, any attempt of a 5 p ffa in any form (luckily for you all they've had all factions represented, ended up in a mismatch, so I doubt it'll happen any time soon

I have a suggestion: could you have more of those fun facts similar to Comrade Crimson did during his stream; it really added more content to the streams and made them fun during the low bits of fighting

Posted by: ComradeCrimson 14 Apr 2014, 3:28

Well, not a direct answer to that but I will be co commentating in a future stream, so expect some more fun facts and what have you, least from myself ;3

i have one question when swr give release 1.85,so after release will be stream of 2.0?

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 14 Apr 2014, 19:09

My thoughts are that as long as there is nothing to stream for 2.0, I'll continue to stream 1.85.
And of course fans can join in the games and play on stream.

Posted by: emin96 14 Apr 2014, 22:58

ok thanks for answer rolleyes.gif . i have another question maybe will be stupid but when swr release 1.85 can we fans appaer in the stream maybe? just asking

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 15 Apr 2014, 0:00

perhaps my last answer wasn't clear enough, but when 1.85 comes out, I expect nothing less than that fans join in games on stream

Posted by: darth andrew 15 Apr 2014, 10:10

Firstly, I am glad that there is a stream. It's fun to watch upcoming units and features in action, and watching online gameplay and commentary is always fun.

However, it seems that fairly often matches drag out in a grindy slugfest, or just end in a stalemate. I feel that these happen because superweapons are regularly disabled from being built. Imo it doesn't make sense to disable an exciting, splashy feature of RotR for the live streams; after all, aren't they for showcasing the mod? More importantly, it means that players aren't punished for building tightly packed bases, along with not expanding throughout the map and going on the offensive.

Anyone else agree that the streamed matches would be more exciting if the superweapons were enabled?

Posted by: Umpfelgrumpf 15 Apr 2014, 10:53

I agree, GP´s would be used on Superweapons then, and not on armies.
But only limited tho!

Posted by: XAttus 15 Apr 2014, 11:11

I don't know why you think that superweapons are not allowed on streams. In my opinion it's the players choice whether to build them or not. However I do agree that some matches end up in a stalemate and were boring to watch so they should be used if the situation requires it.

Additionally, I'd advise playing on smaller and more competitive maps and staying away from 3v3s or 5 player free for alls since we all know how the game reacts to more people playing at the same time.

Also to say something that SHOULD be done rather than just complaining about stuff that SHOULDN'T, I think that 1 vs 1 games played by experienced players are the most intense therefore the most interesting to watch and commentate as well.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 15 Apr 2014, 11:56

Limited Superweapons was a request from the players themselves. I mean, I could turn them on again, but it's always up to the players if they want to use Superweapons or not., Just like its up to the players what they will and will not build..

As for the pace of the matches: I agree, 3 Player Free For All and matches with more players just tend to drag out. While some 1 vs 1 matches are indeed more intense, action packed, entertaining and a lot more fun and easier to observe and commentate on. 2 vs 1 matches are still doable imo.
This is also why, if you look at my Youtube channel, I only record and upload 1 vs 1 matches in Mental Omega. Altho some matches can turn out to be 1 hour long, some other can be as quick as 7-8 minutes.

also, since there is a feedback topic, I have merged this topic into that 1.

Posted by: Generalcamo 16 Apr 2014, 0:01

Map size is also a factor.

For "quick" maps, I recommend staying more towards "tournament" style maps. They are generally smaller and offer quicker battles. The last stream with the 1v1s just dragged on... and on... and on... and on. It took up half the stream!

For a VERY quick 1v1, Tournament Desert is a classic.

Our goal with streaming is also to show a variety of maps, and not show every single tournament desert variation there is out there either. But the fast paced action is noted; and perhaps 2 vs 2's are in order rather then 3 way FFA's- which almost always have to end up with a person getting ganged anyways.

We use limited superweapons because of matches like the naval match; it didn't help end it, really just turn the tables and drag it out. One side was actually winning conventionally until said superweapons came out, 1, then 2, then 5 of them built- and it didn't sit well with the players at all. (Neither did naval spam for that matter either)

So, while the use of superweapons aren't forbidden, for both player happiness and game stability in how it runs, multiple superweapons will not be in popular choice amongst stream contestants. While lots of us do try to do entertaining stuff for the audience like doing cool tactical rushing or using new units, or dicking about with commando's, Ninjaneers, or conscripts and Solid Snaking a person's base, you have to keep in mind: We have to have fun too, otherwise this is gonna seem like a job to us and that won't be fun for anyone if the people on stream aren't enthusiastic.

That's my two cents on the subject anyway, as a stream fighter.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 16 Apr 2014, 12:26

And of course Crimson now speaks with esperience being "forced" to observe a match as well.
That little saturday surprise stream I did was also to see how he would cope with having to sit back and not being able to play at all and thus having to look at it from a different angle.

I personally dont have the time to go through each and every 1 vs 1 map to see how big it is and predict whether a match on each map would or would not take a long time. I just go with whatever is either suggested to me or, based on the map preview, what I like. Of course I would like to squeeze 8 matches in every 2 hour stream, but that's just impossible.

Yeah- and as an odd streamer, me being also a stream fighter, adds a bit of new perspective into the commentator's lot as I know how the players fare and such as well as the streamer's perspective. Hopefully I am able to add some fresh insight along with the other personalities of the stream, pointing out unit voices or stuff the audience may normally, potentially miss out on. That and George, Luis and the other people who do voice and textures need credit where its due xD

Posted by: Joe Kidd 22 Apr 2014, 4:59

I really do love your streams Hecthor, you're a funny commentator and they do an excellent job of displaying 1.85s new toys.

However I was wondering if you could upload the Hunter vs Comr4de match stream onto Youtube, because i really want to watch it and Twitch loads really slowly on my computer, almost to the point of not working.

If you dont want to i understand and I realize you are a busy person.

Thanks in advance

Please no Tournament Desert is my suggestion. So many times I've seen Tournament Desert, that stupid bland map. It has been beaten to death, so I will request to you, Hecthor, that you try and guide the players away from that.

Posted by: Seth 30 Apr 2014, 12:38

I absolutely have to second that. There are so many beautiful maps out there, just no need to play that same map all over again.

Posted by: The_Hunter 30 Apr 2014, 16:26

We might play on that map durring our stream but certainly not over and over and over.

Posted by: emin96 2 May 2014, 1:20

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 2 May 2014, 11:55

As many as it takes, plus there might be some irregular off schedule streams for shits and giggles.
We stream so that you guys have something that moves to look at while you wait, rather than still images

Posted by: emin96 6 May 2014, 8:39

hector doomhammer all streams you are uploaded on youtube in which format you are converting them? (avi, mp3,mov,mp4 etc)

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 6 May 2014, 12:07

OBS records them in MP4, then I have to convert them into AVI so I can edit them, then after rendering the video, it's back to MP4

Posted by: emin96 10 May 2014, 12:55

Hector doomhammer how many times take for edit 1 video of stream???
when i edited my video of 1.802 takes 4 day (only video 1 hour)

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 10 May 2014, 13:12

Since I record in OBS, which saves the video in MP4 I have to convert it to AVI, which takes 2-3 hours, then the actual editing takes, depending on how many succesful matches we had, 2-3 hours, sometimes longer and then rendering it takes up to 3-5 hours depending on how much I edited the video.
So all in all, properly editing does take me a full working day

Posted by: emin96 11 May 2014, 0:22

thanks for all answer .
i have another question about video so do you know how remove protection on music because when i upload skirmish video i have message like this:THIRD PARTY CONTENT so any way for fix this problem?
i see alot of people use ROTR music but they dont have problem
thanks in advance

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 11 May 2014, 1:35

Mute the music is the best way to prevent that from happening, but I know of cases that muted music video clips get those copyright strikes even harder.

One little feedback about player named "knjaz" - he's name should be pronounced like "kniæsʲ", you can hear it here: http://www.forvo.com/word/%D0%BA%D0%BD%D1%8F%D0%B7%D1%8C/.
It's a word from a russian language, it means "prince" or "lord".

which is best program for live streaming?
how i need to set up my OPS for make it work?
thank in advance

Posted by: Graion Dilach 30 May 2014, 3:50

You have to play the game in windowed mode. The trick he's using there is that he has enough high-res monitor so that 1280x720 sized window fits to the screen.

Posted by: ★ Kẫkashi 25 Jun 2014, 15:30

How long does it take to upload a stream to Youtube ?

Also, I would like it if during the beginning of a player match, the focus should be equally on both Player's bases as often the focus is on the surrounding areas which means that you can't see the player's actions very early game.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 26 Jun 2014, 21:47

It all depends on how much time in a day I have to work on a video. Sometimes I have no time at all for days to work on a video, but I'll try to get the last stream out before the next one starts

1: We already have a plan for the next upcoming stream on sunday. so pretty much the answer to this question is NO

2: Yes of course. In the upcoming stream we'll officially announce a few things that will simplify connecting to each other and any player is welcome, 1 match per person per stream, to join in my streamed games, just like in Mental Omega and Red Resurrection

Posted by: emin96 27 Jul 2014, 12:30

Hecthor Doomhammer you are streaming 5 games.so how you get time for (stream edit upload all of them).
i think 5 games is very hard for stream and upload all of them and post them in different site.
hope you understand what i mean. can you explain me

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 27 Jul 2014, 13:30

since I only stream for 2 hours at a time, only 3 times per week, and I have a 20 hour per week job, I have plenty of time to edit and upload the streams.
Plus, I've decresed the amount of time I spent editing, since I no longer do the pre-and post match screens any more, so editing really becomes a lot less time consuming.

But all in all, I stream on wednesday, I edit on Thursday. I stream on Friday. I edit on Saturday. I stream on Sunday, I edit on Sunday or Monday.
so Tuesday is my day off, but I can basically re-arrange my editing schedule at will

Posted by: emin96 3 Aug 2014, 20:15

question again:
when you play in stream or observing your game is not lagging.what you doing for fix that lag? and i think you are playing in high texture and particle.
can you explain me please

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 3 Aug 2014, 23:25

I just play the game as is. My internet connection is strong enough to not cause online lag, my settings are high and my hardware is good enough to let everything run smooth.
And SWR.net of course helps out with online stability

Posted by: DELETED MEMBER 7 Aug 2014, 0:03

http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/3136/

Will this affect you streams?

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 7 Aug 2014, 2:06

I don't even have to look to guess what it's about.

Yes, it will affect the stream, but only the past broadcasts.
During livestreams Twitch can't do anything and the only thing I can do about it, is use uncopyrghted music, or no music at all.

I'll see how some of my mental omega streams are being handled, since they have several songs by Frank Klepacki in the OST, which I always have on, but for the pre-stream songs, I'm working on it

Posted by: Graion Dilach 7 Aug 2014, 12:04

Say, will that affect the streams during their transition to YouTube? I was never certain if you postprocessed the video from the Twitch server or your own local backup...

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 7 Aug 2014, 13:43

Because I record my streams myself, I don't have to rely on those Past Broadcasts/ highlights for my transfer to Youtube.
So Twitch's transfer to Youtube, I have nothing to do with, since I remove those pre-stream songs from editing anyway

Posted by: emin96 9 Aug 2014, 15:40

but on youtube i see some people dont mute music but they dont get copyright

how is possible? maybe they pay for it or something? sleep.gif

Hey doomy, it would be great if you wouldn't always get distraced by the chat.
Because you are the camera on the stream, and often when something interesting happens, like a rush or a GP being launched or something similiar, you are operationg the chat and not getting the hang of it.
It would be very cool if someone else could operate the chat, because then you could concentrate on streaming.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 29 Sep 2014, 14:37

Except for the fact that I value interacting with the chat too much to just completely ignore it and have some one else take care of it.
MARS was unavailable for the past 3 weeks, thus I had to pretty much moderate the chat myself, and since ppl like DarkyVX decided to be douchebags, I had to take time away from the game to do my job: Keeping the channel in a good orderly fashion.

I understand your opinion, but hope to see more casts with someone operating the chat in the future smile.gif.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 29 Sep 2014, 14:59

It's not an oppinion, it's a fact.

the more the chat keeps to the rules, the more attention I can give to the game.
Especially if I have to make new rules in the rules section, because some ppl just want to be jerks to get some attention, than the game and viewers will just have to suffer for a bit.

I always have 1 person moderating the chat but not always is that person a part of the conversation on Skype as co-commentator, and during those streams I just have to keep a more watchful eye on the chat.

Just be glad I moderate the chat on a seperate system (my laptop) from where I host the stream (my pc) because this way is more effective and efficient than doing both on my PC. (not that I have that ability since I only have 1 monitor for each)

Posted by: Umpfelgrumpf 29 Sep 2014, 15:07

I'd still appreciate it if you would spend more time ingame and less in the chat, but I think I stated that often enough now.
It's your stream and you can decide what you want to do of course.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 29 Sep 2014, 19:47

Overall, 2 vs 2's are harder to observe, since there are 4 locations where action can take place at the same time, and since the entire battlefield doesn't fit on 1 screen, it's pretty much impossible to see everything going on, even when I pay attention to the minimap.
That's why I personally prefer 1 vs 1's

Posted by: emin96 30 Sep 2014, 10:07

I personal prefer 1 vs1 and FFA match .

Hector Doomhammer its possible to make some FFA match in future streams. because you rarely stream FFA match.

i have one request : in the next stream upcoming can you choose the tournament desert map but snowly version i think its called (tournament blizzard if i remember good)

because i like that map and want to see player on that map

Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

Posted by: Umpfelgrumpf 20 Oct 2014, 14:48

Hecthor, it would be cool if you would play some more Rotr by yourself.
Because if you are casting right now, you still don't seem to know much about the game.
By the time you at least know all unit names, but you're still always asking hunter because you're not sure, and you're not giving input which is not 100% obvious for the normal stream viewer. I'd love it if you were "good" at the game, then the stream would be way more interesting.
That was my very first critique point that I had when I saw your first stream, and I'm sad that it is still that way, but I know that you can improve.

While I appreciate and understand this criticism, I hope you can understand I am far too busy to dedicate much of my free time to any 1 project.
Yes nowadays I tend to stream a lot more regular games and I could potentially invest that time into improving my skills in RotR or MO, but I really don't have the desire to do so.
Once 1.85 becomes publicly available with SWR.net implemented, I am hoping to see a lot of games during streams so that I don't have to play at all tongue.gif because then I can fully focus on your games and let all of you enjoy the spotlight.

As The Hunter said on the last stream, once all functions have been implemented and tested for balance, then the AI will get reworked so they will start using the new stuff, and when that is done, there's a chance you might get to see me play some Comp Stomps with my co-commentator. AI's are out predictable and less stressful to play against than human players that have years of experience, ut I bet you can understand that.

While nowadays I am streaming on more days and I stream other stuff as well, I am hoping to see every one on those other days as well, but I don't expect nor force any one to sacrifice their own free time (or even non-free time as I some times see that people watch at school or work) to watch my streams.
I stream what I want to stream at any time I feel like it and if this is how I spend my free time, that is my own choice.
Just as it is your own choice to not want to watch anything besides the RotR streams because RotR is all you really care about out of everything that I stream. All I really can do and thus will do, is respect that choice.

When it comes to Emin's question regarding FFA's. I've experienced any kind of FFA to be lengthy and since I on;y can spare a little time extra on Sundays if a match doesn't end before the usual 2 hours are over, I don't like to focus too much time on any given 1 match. Some exceptions of course for 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2.

However, a 3P FFA usually turns into a 2 vs 1 before ending in a 1 vs 1 at the end and not every one in the current testers team likes FFA's (plus the unstable SAGE engine also occasionally has issues with lengthy matches as we've seen in the past)

The streams are at 9am here on sundays for me. I try to follow the best i can, I learn as I go.

How well does SAGE holdup on an 8 player 1v1 map like iron dragon? That would be an interesting stream.

Or a 2v4 AIs maybe?

The current build's AI freezes like hell IMO. Last time we tried such compstomp it even desynced. The AI isn't streamworthy.

Also I don't think the massive spamfest of the AI can be as funny to watch as two players going against each other.

Which is a pity, because that would improve your commentary tremendously.
I liked the stream this weekend much more then the one from last weekend, and maybe I was to harsh in my last post, because you know quite some stuff about the game, but as mentioned above it would be cool if you had a little more tactical insight.
Take LoL/Sc2 shoutcasters for example, they are all pretty good at the game they talk about.
I hope that when 1.85 arrives in the public you will play some RotR with us smile.gif.

Those SC2/LoL/DotA streamers do nothing more than only that and they thrive on the overhype of those games.

I see myself as more laid back, diverse and focus more on entertainment in my commentary.

And hey, for now, my channel is the only channel that does streams of RotR 1.85, but it wouldn't surprise me to see other people take up RotR streams once 1.85 hits the public.

Mine will just be the "official streams"

Posted by: z741 29 Oct 2014, 6:16

SC2 is a great game. Hecthor where are you from? I would think Norway/Finland area. I get the streams here in the States around 10 AM. I noticed you were talking about it in the last stream

He's Dutch with viking origins - which is among the very reasons he's planning to move into Sweden for a really loooooong time.

Not all of them do, only the succesfull ones.

There are also people that stream games that are not as common as those you and me named.
For example people who stream/shoutcast/commentate CoH, Wargame, C&C Zero Hour and so on.

I don't know if it was ever asked.
Will you stream the progress until 2.0 like now 1.85?

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 4 Dec 2014, 23:52

When 2.0 has significant enough progress that the team feels confident that they have something to show, I will be showing off some 2.0 Work In Progress.
These streams will during those weeks replace the public 1.85 streams

Gotta say that yesterdays stream nightbot was on a banning spree. I didn't use the most appropriate kind of language but it was not meant in an insulting way. Ah well it's the rules i guess.

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 9 Dec 2014, 13:59

Well certain words I simply don't want to see in my chat, because I know there is alway at least 1 person getting offended by it.
I can name examples for all my blacklisted words but I'm not going to, because I'd be sitting here tomorrow, typing a way tl;dr message.

And the 2 guys that I personally banned: AlioOt and Cezzar03, they still typed in a non-english language after I timed them out for 10 minutes and told them they should keep the chat in English

Posted by: Stubbornpony 9 Dec 2014, 16:51

I would run a streaming channel differently, but it's you're channel with your rules and there need to be rules wink.gif

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 9 Dec 2014, 17:30

A PURGE as it's called is a 1 second time out + your messages removed. On the Twitch chat that will appear as being BANNED for 1 second.
When any non-chat mod or regular (I decide who is a regular and who not) posts links, more than 15 caps in 1 line, certain words I simply don't want to see (like RAPE), you use stuff like lolololololololoolol or riot riot riot riot riot riot riot riot (repitition)or links, too many emotes or symbols or 251 characters in 1 section, you will get a purge.
This is what Nightbot does for me.
I have the curtacy to let Nightbot explain in 1 way or another what you did wrong if you did get purge (I kicked you hindanuts because...)

I do look a lot at how other, way more professional, streamers run their channels, and I can say, they are way more strict than I am, plus they have more active chat mods that will time you out for 10 minutes or even permanently ban you for some things that I don't think is worth a ban.

I run my channel the way I do because I am ambitious and serious about what I do. I treat it as a company of which I am its CEO and thus rules are a must. Otherwise the chat would end up being a flamewar clusterfuck because people are too ealily offended by the smallest silliest things.
But besides that, I also treat people my chat as I would treat guests in my house. if you behave like an idiot, I'll tell you to stop, then I'll ask you to leave and if not, I'll force you out.
I expect every one to have some sort of common sense to understand you are a guest on my channel and thus you should behave. Just like on the forums, if you go too far, you'll end up being banned. It's that simple.

You may run your channel less strict, which is perfectly fine of course, but no matter on which channel I jump onto the chat, I always read the rules of the channel, given the streamer has any rules, just in case there's a rule on his channel that I don't have (and most likely I'll add that rule) and apply my own rules to my behaviour on other ppl's channels because I don't want to end up being banned behaving a way I don't want m own viewers to behave.

Hecthor Doomhammer question for you can you record some 1.802 replays and upload them on youtube??(good game replays)

did i need to pay for that?

Posted by: Hecthor Doomhammer 10 Dec 2014, 16:27

I simply don't do 1.802 because to me it's obsolete, especially with the 185 release right around the corner

Um ... whenever we get to the version with the new story missions, will you be showing yourself playing any of them on stream, either before or after the release of that version? Sorry if you mentioned this somewhere already, I don't recall. ><

From what I understand missions, campaigns and challenges will be for the 2.0 version if present at all.
I think personally that I would enjoy my streams the way they are: have some on as co-commentator, observe online matches and talk about random stuff and related stuff.
2.0 is too far away for all of us so it's not really a ood idea to start talking about my personal plans for that, since I don't even have them

That's a good point ... with all the overhauls in 2.0 it wouldn't make sense if the missions came out sooner than that ... nevermind then. And yeah, it is a little far away to start thinking about that isn't it? Oh well, I just was curious. Thanks for your time. ^^;
