So I noticed that there wasn't a thread here for this RTT franchise. I've just recently started to play the game and don't know quite what to think yet. Is it a genius real-time-tactics game that reinvents the genre, or an unreasonably micro-oriented mess that suffers from a scale that's too large for it's gameplay?

I've played less than an hour so far. It seems good enough, but I haven't played enough to decide that yet.

Having played all three Wargames thus far, I do rather like it because it feels very different from other RTS I played. I find that it's probably the most comfortable take on a more 'realistic' (still simplified) RTS with things like supply logistics, territory control, reconnaissance, unit counter relations and stats - Anything more simulation-like would be unpleasant for me personally, so I like what the game is trying to do. The scale is a bit hit and miss in my opinion. On the one hand, it is impressive how large the maps are and how you can zoom out all the way but on the other hand, it seems a bit gimmicky as most of the time, the overwhelming majority of all that space will never be exploited save for some daring helicopter flanking manoeuvre. What I would like to see would be a current day/near future Wargame and a removal of the BLUFOR/REDFOR distinction so that mixed teams would be a possibility. Overall, I find Wargame a fun diversion but in the end, I do prefer the direction of CoH, which is notably less realistic but offers more variety and personality in both the factions as a whole as well as individual units. It may not be realistic to order a single tank or fireteam when to load a special shell or when to chuck a grenade, but it just feels a lot more rewarding when you micro your units to good effect, like you can in CoH, not to mention that Wargame also omits other features that I really like in RTS, such as base building and call-in abilities. It's also a bit notorious in how dry its tutorial is (more like an in-game manual, really) which makes it the kind of game that one may very well throw away in frustration very early because it is very unforgiving and, in some cases, downright cheap (Due to the long ranges or artillery and the fact that any type of unit can be called in immediately, points permitting, one can simply barrage the enemy spawnpoint with uninterceptable cluster rockets at the very start of a battle).

It is a good RTS if you like slower pace games. The scale of the games is really big but I feel it is wasted due the control zones. Basically except for helo attacks, most times there would be only a limited use of the ground provided. Also infantry is UP and there are some big unbalances that can be exploited
And for SP , the 1st is the only one which does it right. The campaigns of airland and red dragon are really boring and unimaginative |
