In terms of a game, I believe that factions are an important part of the setting and story. Especially those that are unique.
Examples include:
ROTR's five factions: USA (Generalist), GLA (Subversive), China (Spammer/Horde), Russia (Powerhouse) and E.C.A (Cannon/Turtler)

The Paradox Mod: Allies (Generalist/Air Force), Soviets (Powerhouse), Empire (More elitist- bit hard to pin down), Confederate Revolutionaries (Subversives- good guy GLA.), Order of the Talon (Elitist/Powerhouse/quality), the Mediterranean syndicate (Cannon/Ranger), the Atomic Kingdom of China (more defensive in approach) and the Electrical Protectorate (Spammer).

I love unique factions and I wanted to create a thread where people could post their own faction designs in any universe they want.

They could be Post Apocalyptic Bandits, Cybernetic Purists, Dinosaurs, Alternate Dimension fascist super-maniacs with super tanks.

I guess the idea is it is a sort of shout box for random game ideas and factions etc.

One idea that's been on my mind for quite some time, as a sort of creative thought exercise, would be a game about a renewed Korean war, set in a 2020s or 30s timeframe with modern day weaponry, but a bit of a futuristic twist to allow for some creativity and use of artistic licence. The gameplay would be most reminiscent of Company of Heroes, albeit on a somewhat larger scale. In short, the factions would be North Korea, with a sizeable but largely outdated army that has to rely on swarm tactics, indiscriminate firepower and a bit of guerilla tactics (essentially combining elements of ROTR's China and GLA), South Korea, which would be a defensive focused steamroller (imagine like the ECA but instead of high-tech protocol units, you get Russia-style steamrolling power towards the end), an American-led coalition force of Pacific nations (including units from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines) which would be the generalist faction with a bit of an air force focus and a faction of Chinese special forces, who would play against type by -not- being a horde army and instead engage in guerilla/mobility tactics with advanced weaponry, the idea being that they initially support NK covertly, but later turn against them, all while trying to keep their own involvement as subtle and low-key as possible in order not to escalate the war whilst still protecting their own interests.

PS: Since this is a game design topic, I will move it to the Games Discussion smile.gif

Thanks Mars
Great idea.
Certainly South Korea and North Korea are great ideas.
A few suggestions:
Perhaps the Pacific Force can be a revitalised ANZUS+ Japan
The MBT could be an Abrams Tanks (US and Australia utilise this) along with a mix of Japanese, American and ANZ vehicles
In terms of China, they could start with a covert force, before deploying a highly flexible expeditionary (I know they're just across the Border) force equipped with regular weapons.

That's quite what I imagined. The Chinese faction would be the most 'lightweight', if you will, perhaps to the point of only using a few buildings which could pack up and redeploy elsewhere either as trucks or helicopters. They would rely heavily on infantry, but whereas NK would use them to swarm, China would have well trained weapon specialists operating like paratroopers or special forces behind enemy lines. As the game goes on, they would also receive support from highly mobile and lightly armoured vehicles. It'd be interesting to set them up as a faction that doesn't drive home its victory by overrunning the opposing base with a tide of heavy tanks but rather, decimate, conscrict and overwhelm the defenders methodically, then simply walk in with some elite operators, mob up what's left, and demolish the place. One of their subfactions would represent a more brute force approach, and could still culminate in the deployment of a small heavy armour force, so that we could still have the obligatory ZTZ tanks in there.

For the Pacific faction, it might also be interesting to consider a non-tier based tech progression where instead of unlocking whole tiers of units via a building, you would be able to purchase access to 'collections' of units in whichever order you prefer/can afford, the idea being that you 'activate' different contingents from your allies. I think RA3 Paradox had something similar for North Vietnam, except that each purchase unlocked the tech to one particular new unit. Instead, each of thesewould give you access to multiple types of units that are thematically related that you can then build. For example, activating a light motorised contingent from the Philippines once would then allow you to build Philippine Marines to bolster your infantry (if we presume that this faction would otherwise tend towards higher cost units) and armoured gun trucks that serve as transports and carry several .50 cals, adding mobile firepower and numbers to your selection. Activating a more expensive JSDF mechanized force would give you advanced Type 10 tanks and MCV tank destroyers for the late game, and so on. You would be able to buy these unlocks in whichever order you like, allowing for unconventional tactics, like trying to get the heavy/expensive units as early as possible while having to make do with a very limited selection until then, or playing slowly, then attacking across the entire spectrum once your whole roster is unlocked.

Yes Mars your idea is great
With the pacific
You could have:
Phillipines Marines (as you suggested)
JSDF (As you suggested)
ANZAC (Special Forces and a more mechanised/light infantry approach given Australia and New Zealand have few (if any in NZ's case) battle tanks)
and of course the US

Disregard my previous post, I realised you covered it all

Another idea I had would take place in 2015/16 and diverge from the events of the late 1980's in which to a degree the USSR won the War in Afghanistan and the Union collapsed in 1995, instead of 1991/2. This meant that the U.S faced a far stronger Iraqi Army in Operation Desert Storm, leading to the formation of Basilisk, a NATO task force with a centralised command structure and multinational corps. They would operate many modern weapon systems such as the Panzerhaubiter, Leopard, Fennek, M270, Puma, Abrams and Euro-Tiger along with experimental weapons such as the F-35 and Elefant 2 Plasma tank hunter. As such they are a faction with heavier equipment that focuses more on brute force than technological advancements and speed. Their builder would be a Dachs 2, a modified version of the original Dachs engineering vehicle. Their buildings would be built from the ground up and take a while to build.

Basilisk would be facing off against Echelon, a secretive cabal of forces mixing PMCs, Cyberterrorism and the military-industrial complex. Echelon's units would be flexible, fast and long ranged, able to quickly and effectively deliver strikes or hack and disable enemy bases. They could also hire local military forces to combat Basilisk, allowing for more direct combat forces to protect their weaker units. Their arsenal would include a cheaper version of the Armata MBT, the O-4, a cannibalised version of the PL-01, the South African Super Hind and G-60 artillery piece. Their buildings, which are prefabricated, are deployed by a helicopter. They simply requisition the building and a helicopter flies to the command centre, which then allows you to deploy the building anywhere on the map.

In Terms of Factions this would most likely make:
NK (Spammer/Subversive)
SK (Cannon/Powerhouse/Turtle)
China (Is sort of a mix but would be a bit of an Elitist, meets Ranger/Technical wit a little bit of subversive thrown in)
Pacific Expeditionary Force (I took a few liberties with the name- Brute meets Specialist and elements of many playstyles so I'm just gonna say Generalist)

I had an idea for a faction. It is more fantasy-inspired than military sci-fi or contemporary, but that's how I roll baby.

This faction - let's call them the Natives - would use a combination of guerilla and stealth tactics, and would work together in harmony with nature to win. You see, they have totems that can connect with the nature gods and aid them in battle. These totems are constructed out of icons, with different icons having different effects on the enemy. Combining icons into one totem can have a multitude of effects. Their units would consist of archers, swordsmen, but also assassins, shamans that could command animals, and even priestesses that would use these totems and give them to individual units. Their base would be constructed in the trees and be stealthed at all times, and their units could also move quickly through the tree canopies.

The Natives' "vehicles" would actually be armored war beasts that follow commands of a shaman. You don't control the beasts directly but rather tell the shaman what to do with them. If your shaman dies, the beasts would run amock and kill everything before fleeing, and you'd have to recruit more beasts for your army. Eventually, if they have the entire forest under their control, they would contact the nature gods which would be their superweapon. The nature gods rain down hellfire on the enemy, with lightning storms, fire tornadoes and all kinds of chaotic weather. Don't mess with the Natives.

In order to combat them you would have to take down their strength; the forest. Cut down trees, burn down swathes of land and just impose your industrial empire on their land. Eventually, the Natives will run out of beasts to command, their totems will become weaker and the nature gods will abandon them. Then all you have to do is bring down the last trees and kill their leader.

Well that's my idea of a faction, basically. I have a lot of ideas about different factions, for example another idea I have is based on an alien aristocracy, where species with more telepathic abilities control the majority, and their way of conquering others would be through claiming their land and imposing taxes.

Hey Svea, welcome to the thread, I hope we can make use of your writing talent.

The enemy could be an Industrial sort of Fascist Oligarchy mix thingy...
They could have armies of gas mask mooks as infantry supplemented by heavy vehicles.
They could have the idea of an arms race, while the Natives dominate early on, the Empire arms up.
They could bring in Shells of factories which players then choose what type of factory they want it to be: heavy arms, robotics (Clockwork) etc. They could have massive slow moving factories that consume trees and generate resources for you to command. As you gain resources you build a sprawling Industrial city that is producing all manner of weapons. Eventually armed with various flame, chemical and conventional weapons you can bring down your enemy.

Hmm, yes, interesting.

So this faction, let us call them the Aliens, need a new place to live, and what better place than this forest untouched by their hands. The Aliens are the exact opposite to the Natives; they focus on making themselves seen and heard and are not shy to show off their power. These factions would have a morality system (the Natives lose morality if their trees are destroyed) and one of the Aliens' ways of conquering is to completely demoralize their enemy. They can build imposing statues and industrial facilities to demoralize their enemies.

Now this Alien aristocracy has units divided into classes. The lowest class, those unable to think properly on their own, need to be commanded by someone from the middle class, a slave driver shall we say. They work like the Natives' beasts. The middle class would be more traditional units armed with weapons and drones that would combat the Natives directly. The upper class, those with telepathic abilities, would be three commanders commanding everybody. If they are killed, then the Aliens' entire army falls apart, so it is crucial they are protected at all costs.

Unlike the Natives, the Aliens need resources to fuel their conquests. Primarily they cut down trees to get minerals from the ground below, but they also need breeders. These breeders are located in special pods, and are the ones that allow you to muster up your army with lower class drones, because the lower class will make up the bulk of your army. If they are killed, not only will your morale drop but your supply of soldiers will deplete. They also need power which they extract from herding in beasts and killing them.

The Alien aristocracy also combine in some city management gameplay since they are trying to find a new place to live, which amps up the difficulty. But instead of individual buildings they use one single structure they build all their things on. Abodes, resource processors, slaughterhouse power plants, breeding pods, and upper-class headquarters for the telepathic caste. Building structures costs nothing, but you need to divert your manpower - which you primarily use to breed new soldiers - to build them, which diminishes your army. Eventually they complete their home and can contact their mothership, which would be there superweapon. The mothership arrives and burns the entire forest with one strike, allowing them to claim all resources instantly and the Natives' die.

The way the Natives' can defeat the aliens is to use underhanded tactics and go straight for the head; the three upper class aliens. If one upper classer dies he can eventually be replaced with someone from the middle class, so you need to strike them down at the same time. Another way to cut them off is to prevent them from gathering resources; take all their resources near their home away from them some way I haven't figured out yet. You could also mount a direct attack on them but that would be suicidal.

So that's the Alien aristocracy. Oh and I also said they would defeat their enemy though imposing taxes but I couldn't really figure that out in a clever way.

Forget my suggestion then...
Are you any good at drawing I'd love to see some concepts, or at least pictures that are similar to what you've imagined

Those are some big-ass pictures...

I had actually been writing some stuff down about that faction for quite some time and your suggestions didn't really fit in. But now I'm thinking of a genocidal empire of robots that could use some of that, hmm...

Use what?
Sorry for being blunt but I'm not sure what you mean by using that.

Oh I see
You mean use some of H.Y.D.R.A's ideas
feel free to post any criticism of it here, I was more using it to get an idea of designing a general.
Also feel free to post any ideas about my Basilisk vs Echelon idea.

No, you move.

I've been thinking about a "OP" faction that had a overcomplicated supply line in comparison to others, so you'd have to keep one eye on your base at all times, rewarding people capable of multitasking between his supply line and army while punishing those who get caught up in one or the other.

Sounds good
What sort of units would they have?

Well, it's all based on setting. I mean, my original take was that they was semi-fantasy oriented in that it was a rough fantasy-equivalent to the Knights Templar, who had to follow certain codes of conduct (Ie Chivalry) have their units be "Blessed" after being trained and pray every once in a while or whatnot, but had extremely durable armor, warhorses, zealotry, and overall superior forces to other factions.

A sci-fi race of Scary Dogmatic Aliens would work as well, although it's a rather tired and over-done archetype, or a modern military that had to deal with noncombatants while their enemies could hide amongst them, and send crippled soldiers to a hospital while their opposites left them to die.

I guess some sort of slow powerhouse dictatorship would work as well.

Possibly. Maybe a mechanic where your economy has a risk of trying to rebel against you, meaning you have to post some troops around them, like a more complex risk-heavy version of the Slave Miner.
