As long as 'balanced' is not over-interpreted as 'bland and boring', I prefer it over stuff like map-killing superweapons and ridiculously overpowered superunits, especially
those of the pseudo-balanced (i.e. you need to be at rank 5, build an extra building and play $9001) variety. Overpowered stuff often goes with low production quality, too. |

Anything ShW-esque. No, just balanced mods.

I like mods that expand a game rather than try to change it too much. Hence why I think ShW > ROTR.

Mods that make the game better really, or actually more or less make it even much more fun than it was before.

Creative mods that expand its gameplay. Balance is secondary as I'm not much of a multiplay person.

It was a number purposely exaggerated for effect. While I appreciate irony and sarcasm et cetera are concepts that are sometimes difficult to get a handle on even in a society that uses them constantly, you may want to consider whether obviously outlandish claims or suggestions are made seriously in future, because they usually aren't.

I normally go for balanced mods with LOADS of new units and factions. Hence I like ShW and ROTR.

Hmm, a nice mix of balance, creativity, innovation, quality, graphics and fun factor?
Shockwave is a good representative. It has basically all of the above, while not excelling in any particular field, the mix of everything there just makes it a good mod overall. Although ROTR outstrips it with its shiny new models, I don't think I will notice those that much anyway, only when I look at renders do I see how much better they are. I'm a functionality over form person. On the other hand, I don't like ROTR as much as I like Shockwave. It has extreme creativity, innovation, quality and graphics, but its balance is terrible. Yes the team says they will do that later, but personally I don't find that excuse satisfying. At least basic balance? Like anti-air > aircraft? The team tried implementing many innovative gameplay changes, but currently many are plagued by severe imbalances. It is also not as fun, but that's just because of the fact that it is incomplete and contains far less content than Shockwave. Many other mods I played tend to lack balance. There just isn't many mods out there to have specialized balance advisers, or have leaders that are even aware of the art of fine balancing. Take Contra. It has most of the things listed, except for balance, which consequently affects its fun factor. Yes, they are both indeed quite interconnected, at least for me. The noble general's promotion based teching isn't well implemented, making the game just slow and uninteresting. Severe imbalances are common too. Now lets look at another end of the spectrum, the community patch 1.06, not really a mod, I just included this for a contrast. It is really a patch, no new content, only balance changes. While certain "pro" players more than enjoy it, it doesn't appeal to the general public, not one bit, because to them, it's just plain Zero Hour. There are however plenty of ingenious features, the multi-point general's promotion system being the best. It fixes all the problems related to players not selecting certain powers. Honestly if it wasn't for this, who the hell would use Emergency Repair? I also like SZ, but no point in talking about a mod no one plays yet. Conclusion, I like mods that are fresh, exciting, fun and visually appealing. I did not vote because the options are too limited, basically saying "mods that change gameplay only", "mods that don't care about gameplay" and "generic addition". So yea, I have a sharp taste for mods. Maybe it's because I'm a modder myself? This post has been edited by JJ: 29 Jun 2009, 14:30 |

Something like Crazy Mod? Crazy mod was funny. I like looking at the new units. But it was just not very fun gameplay wise. By new idea I like to see new factions and units that are unique and not just a rip of the old ones. For example - ROTRs twin fang AA was a unit I liked. (Although expensive and slow to build) -------------------- |

I prefer a mod with a bunch of new units that's later balanced. I don't think it's productive to concentrate on balance when half the content is missing. That said, if it were balanced enough to be played reasonably well, than that's a plus. When the game is nearing it's completion, I'd like to see it focus on balance more.
