Yesterday, the Aktionsbündnis Winnenden, a little known interest group that formed in the aftermath of the Winnenden school shooting earlier this year, has held a generic anti-gaming rally in Stuttgart. Their goal: The universal ban of the infamous 'killergames', because they're all made by the US military and old people are afraid of thrm. This time, they actually placed a huge container in front of the city hall and asked people to dump their violent video games, the amazing result of which can be seen here.

So yeah...

I guess they're feeling a little stupid for renting that massive container; a small shopping trolley would have sufficed.

Epic fail. People need to realize that video games are awesome.

I'm sorry for the loss these people had to endure, but maybe they should camp up outside the factories where the bullets and guns are produced.

I could see through it if someone went on a killing spree with a DVD/game box - then their cause would have merit.

Oh, wait, never mind...

Me too, thinking of a full people power of an anti-game rally, but look what we've got here... Tsktsk.

GTA4 and Starcraft.

Since when is killing Zergs violent? Its like banning pest control when you have giant bugs trying to eat everyone.

Dunno about the other.

In other news, this is a minor victory for freedom of expression.

To be honest, I found the mere prospect of radicalised people publically trashing and destroying video games pretty disturbing. It just reminds me of the infamous book burnings of the 1930s, where art that was condemned as 'degenerated' was treated with even greater contempt. "Those who burn books will eventually burn people". People in this country should be a lot more sensitive when it comes to these things, simply due to our history. They can hate and antagonise game[r]s as much as they want, but this is just downright tasteless.

Ja, this has been compared to the Book Burnings in the 1930s, thus I'm glad they barely got enough for kindling. tongue.gif

And possibly, if the rally was hugely successful, it might be compared to the Cultural Revolution (albeit on a smaller scale).

These people need to harden the f**k up. In the US, the same people who want restrictions on violence in video games/movies are the same people who want to restrict the sale/ownership of firearms and forbid children from playing football/kickball/tag/etc. on playgrounds because those games "encourage violent and competitive behavior" and "some one might (gasp!) get hurt!" If they had their way the world would either resemble at worst the dystopian future seen in Robocop, where violent thugs run rampant and no one can stop them, or at best the future from Demolition Man, where everyone is a weak-willed pussy.

I recall a news here in the Philippines last year, a politician even tried to make a law to ban boxing, to no avail.

Gamestar article

tl;dr-version for non-Germans: The new government acknowledges videogames as an established part of our everyday-culture and will not pursue a universal ban. Unlike the treaty of the old government, this one does not even refer to 'killergames', violence and bans but instead declares that educational, culturally worthwhile games will be recognised to a greater extent. Sure, they're obviously not going to hand any subsidies to Crytek, but as long as they don't ban things, it's all good.

Good to see that this foolishness will be coming to an end. Will this mean the end of the ludicrously strict censorship on videogames released in Germany?

It depends. I don't think they're gonna go easier on future 18+ titles but it does seem like they will NOT make things any stricter than they are now.

Everyone always blames these games while the actual problem lies elsewhere. Blaming the game is always easier than correcting the actual problems.
