SWR Productions Forum > Community > The Databank

Finally - after 15 years of neglect - the FX-2 project came to an end with the victory of the Swedish SAAB/Gripen NG. The Brazil must acquire 36 fighter, total technological transfer of aircrafts and incorporate of national systems on the platform, as new digital systems and the powerful A-Darter missiles.

Brazil made a good purchase?

I've got a cousin who ha flown in a Gripen before, and he says it feels like any other fighter jet.

Well, then if he has flown in other modern fighters and think which is the same fighter jet - in general terms of performance - this should be a good aircraft.

I think that it would be better if Brazil got latest version of MiG-29 which is way
cheaper and with that in mind it could equip itself with more than 36 of them due
to lower price, later on installing Israeli cutting edge electronics just they did with
their F-5s and Mi-35s.I saw Gripen couple of times live,it doesn't leave impression
that it is better than MiG-29 nor F-16,while Eurofighter owns all three of them together.

The problem of the MIG-29 is that it would depend on the purchase contract to be signed between Brazil and Russia and also would require the upgrading of the entire infrastructure of the country's aerial support - runways and hangars for example - already the MIG-29 is one large aircraft.

Another problem would be the adaptation of armaments in the western standard and own A-Darter missile which should be an asset of the "FX-2" fighter.

But without a shadow of doubt the MIG-29 is a wonderful aircraft, Eurofighter also, but your price and contractual requirements are outside the realm of Brazil.

Isnt Eurofighter only for EU members?
MARS
Not really. There is no such restriction, although one might get that impression from the list of operators because no one outside Europe besides Saudi Arabia and Oman of all frickin' places has the bloody thing. Seeing how the Typhoon has been in development for several decades by now (hell, at some point, it was still gonna be called the Jaeger 90), it doesn't look to be a real commercial success. Canada, Malaysia, Serbia, Peru and a few other Middle Eastern countries that I personally would never sell any weapons to are 'interested' in it in the same way as many of them are interested in various Sukhois and American jets whereas Greece, Turkey, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Norway and Singapore cancelled their bids in favour of American, Swedish and domestic planes. I totally appreciate the spirit of military hardware developed in cooperation across Europe because there's simply way too much redundancy among our militaries, but it bears the risks of cost overflow, lengthy delays and design arguments because everyone has their own vision of what the project is supposed to achieve.

i agree with generalcamo- they could have get a cheaper plane that would acomplish the same missions for a lower price

Well it is not actually that big,it is quite bigger than MiG-21 but compared to other modern Russian fighter jets it is actually smallest (I think).
Again,I suggest that you should read some articles about MiG-29 Sniper or MiG-29G,with similar modernization hypothetical Brazilian MiG-29
could carry both western weaponry and probably A-Darter which depends from agreement with those foreign companies.
And since Brazil had history with Israelis upgrading their aircraft,i think they would be able to make those aircraft one of worlds most fearsome fighters,
look what they did with MiG-21s,Google articles about MiG-21 Lancer and MiG-21 2000.
Talonek
Wait, why wouldn't you want to sell to Canada?
MARS
^ If you're referring to my post about the Typhoon, the 'that I personally would never sell weapons to' part refers to the Middle Eastern countries, not necessarily the other ones I specifically mentioned and especially not Canada for that matter.

Really the MiG-29 is a proven exceptional machine, considered superior to the F-15 in maneuverability and performance, in addition to offering Western configurations. However updated versions of the fighter, such as the one offered by Israel - MiG-29 Sniper - for the Romanian Air Force ended up not being realized due to high costs, mainly concerning maintenance, this is a point that should be taken into consideration within the geopolitical; the protracted global financial crisis and hypothetical scenarios of 'economic sanctions' have become familiar things in the 21 century, which forces governments to rethink their spending on expensive military hardware.

Another determining factor would be the conditions of the agreement to be signed for the modernization of the aircraft; hardly allow autonomy for the industry in Brazil, it would be necessary to send the planes to Israel or Russia to do the upgrade, thus maintaining the domestic industry technologically dependent.

Gripen meets the needs of Brazil because it incorporates the key elements of modern avionics, besides having an excellent cost/benefit ratio; brings greater independence for the country because the SAAB seeks a strategic partnership to promote the aircraft and Brazil, besides injecting capital to the project, will integrate integrate new systems on the aircraft. Also there is the project of improvement of aircraft to aircraft carriers - something that interests the Brazil - and the joint development of the Gripen also adds to South Africa - strategic partner of Brazil and user of the aircraft - a consistent strategic cooperation.

The F-18 was competing in the project "F-X2", but lost their chances of being chosen as a winner due to allegations of NSA spying. Such complaints that included monitoring of the Brazilian pre-salt caused some doubts and mistrust on the part of Brazil as the "good intentions" of the White House. The President reiterated the government's stance in the last speech of the year, after the choice of Gripen, saying that Brazil should gain autonomy for the defense and thus maintain its sovereignty. Boeing's proposal included not only the sale of F-18 but also a partnership with Embraer for the worldwide sale of the Brazilian KC-130 - medium size - transport aircraft.

It's also unable to be refueled midair, runs into bingo faster, and manuveurbility isn't exactly the "One stat to rule them all" it used to be with missiles.

So yeah, you can pull a cobra.

The other guy can pull a few more missiles at you, from longer range, and it's all up to the pilot to see if he can survive a missile on him.

The Mig is a fine plane, but like all russian designs it was designed by someone drunk on vodka, and we all know vodka is no match for good ol fashioned beer, someone drunk on beer will always design a better plane than someone drunk on vodka.

Ok, how much of the last bit made sense?
