He can play Battlefield 3 just fine.

But whenever he plays shockwave, after a few mins into the game his computer just turns off.

Hes running a Sony Vaio, Windows 7.

Previously, he could play just fine but up until like a month or two ago, it just shuts off. Me and a select few other people have been trying to fix his problem but we just cant figure it out.

it seems odd that this would only happen durring ShockWave gameplay.

If i had to guess this is more something of a overheating issue and the pc needs to be cleaned of dust (internaly)

I was talking to him just a moment ago and it shutdown while he was playing Spore.

He recently did clean out to try and fix his issue.

What I dont understand is why it only happens with certain games.

Some games are more demanding on your hardware than others.

I would really recommend you get it properly checked out to see if all fans are turning properly and if not bring it to a proper store for someone to have a look at it because if he keeps it up his system is going to burn out eventualy.

Everytime it shuts off its either your GPU, CPU, Power supply or some other component of the mother board turning the computer off to prevent damage by over heating.
Its basicly like someone getting knocked out cold by a punch and then waking up from it again, might be ok a few times but eventualy something is going to break and you'll have permanent damage or your system dies completely.
