mostly pullin' your leg, but... you seem rather confident about the future of the countries you're talking about. Just as America might be less of an influence in the world, so can other countries if their problems continue, and let's be honest here, China, India, Russia, and any other example of a nation that's had people for thousands of years, have more issues that can put them "behind" far more easily in the near or long term future than what you can expect with a country like the US (or whatever becomes of it with Canada) We're mostly speaking speculation, because hey, many would have believed the USSR was bound for centuries of prosperity... but we know how that ended. Also this is silly polititalk, might as well discuss the ability of the west to twist that trend 180 and go full containment on the east, because It's not like it's impossible. : P Now you have made a reasonably plausible comment, at least acknowledge that we are both speaking in a speculative way about all this, I thought you felt comfortable enough to think that your way of seeing things was the only correct, least it's a start for you... Too bad that his argumentative ability is not as accurate as his humor... For at least people can laugh... -------------------- You already imagined how would be SAP in the ROTR's universe? least it's a start for you... you must be popular with the girls. But anyways, since thread is basically kill, let's talk about robobobobots. How do some of y'all think military robotics will take shape in the coming decades? I think military robots might be incredibly scary... imagine seeing one just passing by hunting for people at night in a city. YIKES! EDIT: Boston Dynamics' Handle I can see America potentially bringing the most interesting cases of it in the coming decades, but I'm aware china has their own programs following the steps really closely too. Russian robots are coming too, of course. Robot tanks anyone? https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/16/a-russi...ge-drone-tanks/ This post has been edited by Star_Abraham: 7 Apr 2017, 17:24 -------------------- |

Military robots are definitely an interesting and frightening field. For the foreseeable future, issues of control and power storage will likely remain a key challenge to overcome. Small remote-controlled robots, like man-portable recon UAVs and bomb disposal robots, are already entering service and will likely be further refined. I can see something like dedicated robot/drone support companies being created and robot/drone specialists being assigned to infantry squads but the technology will probably make a huge leap by the time artificial intelligence - and miniaturisation of power components - allows for truly autonomous systems later in the century. The issue with remote-controlled machines is that they are dependent on a secure line of communication, which a technologically adept opponent could very easily disrupt. Artificial intelligence on the other hand would make it possible for robots to truly operate on their own when given a clearly defined mission. Seeing the general decline in population sizes and aging of developed societies, there will also be less manpower available for the armed forces, so human personnel in the future could consist of highly trained specialists working with a much larger force of remote-controlled and autonomous systems. The future skills of a professional human soldier could be vastly more diverse and their working relationship with robots could be akin to that between medieval knights and feudal levies.

Military robots are still mostly in prototype designs, let us return to this topic when it is 2020 already.

3 years left is a pretty short time when it comes to Military hardware development. why not now? You wish to talk about air or land military robots? Well, UAVs and the relatively new UCAVs are already in the service of some countries. But both have not been battlefield tested. I suppose such devices would fare much better in a typical Middle East scenario than in the European battlespace, with the small frontline. I do not believe that robots would eventually replace human soldiers, at least not in the next two decades. War is a too complex thing to be left for the AI to decide about. -------------------- |

Forget about robots, where the hell is my power armor? I am surprised that there is little to no research in this field.
They'll allow soldiers to carry heavy weapons and a lot more ammo than before, along with turning them into literal walking tanks. They're essentially mini tanks. That could solve a lot of logistic and fuel problems as well. I wanna see a T-51 in my lifetime. This post has been edited by Keeper: 8 Apr 2017, 5:03 |

I know the us has been experimenting with exo suits, so I assume power armour would be the evolution of that.

The problem with powered armour is similar to that of autonomous military robots: Power storage. At present, you just don't have a means of power storage that is small, rugged, lightweight and powerful enough to allow an exoskeleton or robot to operate on its own out in the field for meaningful periods of time. A solution to this problem could be found next year or it might not be found for the next 50 years, but if there is, then powered armour and military robots will experience a massive surge in development and will likely revolutionise military doctrine.

Damn, I just saw a reply from MARS from TWO YEARS AGO. Jesus. I wish there was a notification system in place.
Anyway, I hope this isn't a necro (this topic is still pinned), here's an article on how many futuristic weapons have been surpassed by hypersonic missiles. What is your opinion guys? This post has been edited by 3rdShockArmy: 5 Mar 2019, 18:56 -------------------- |

Heres a link to a video that explains why hypersonic missiles are next gen but are heavily overhyped, Especially in range and Interception capability I won't repeat the whole video so give it a spin US is behind in deploying them, that much is true -------------------- |

It's a good video, but it seems that the author is a bit behind schedule. The Russian supersonic missiles he mentioned are already at the end of their service life and they're being replaced by hypersonic missiles like the Kalibr, Kinzhal and Avangard. These missiles are able to fly very low and still retain hypersonic speed, which makes them particularly deadly. And what's more, now that the INF is dead, they aren't limited to just one, anti-ship role, but they're also likely to see deployment on land as well, primarily mounted on current Iskander carriers.
Also, one of the reasons America isn't fielding any newer ASMs is that it still has an unrivaled Navy, and most of its adversaries, like Russia and China, lack big groups and task forces. The only real problem for the USN now is Russia's subs. So, that's also the reason why America invests more money in anti-submarine tech, rather than AMS. However, with new developments in hypersonic missile tech, all of this is changing. These missiles have become compact enough to be fitted on certain aircraft, like the Indian Su-30 MKI and the Russian MiG-31. -------------------- |

I was wondering if the whole belief that drone swarm can replace human completely on the battlefield was real or not? It seem too good to be truth even though some people on Quora was believing it and showing plenty of proofs for it like lower cost of production and reducing casualty.

It seem too good to be truth even though some people on Quora was believing it and showing plenty of proofs for it like lower cost of production and reducing casualty. You add Infantry to hold urban areas, for fire support and other roles Swarm drones will definitely help and add new challenges/benefits but humans arent going anywhere Plus...Aside from America, who can pay to replace humans yet? If the US could say use ATLAS variant from Boston dynamics thats half as good as a human In every job then that would be a godsend for the US as politicians wont have to face backlash or get bothered with risky casualties -------------------- |
